The leading second-order specific torque on a collisionless distribution from a weak steadily rotating perturbation with and . The sum includes conjugate harmonics. Linear response in action-angle variables gives the finite-time kernel ; its integrated long-time resonance kernel selects orbital resonances. This limit assumes a smooth continuum, regular resonant surfaces and negligible secular redistribution during the response calculation.
Resonator 2026-10-18
A resonator stores oscillatory energy in one or more normal modes. Driving near a mode's frequency can produce resonance. Losses limit the response and determine its quality factor. After the drive is removed, an isolated weakly damped mode decays approximately exponentially; an observed room response may combine many modes.
RLC circuit Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
An RLC circuit combines electrical resistance , inductance , and capacitance . The capacitor stores energy in its electric field; the inductor stores energy in its magnetic field. Their exchange can produce an oscillation, while Joule heating removes energy. A series RLC circuit gives a particularly clear example: changing turns ringing into a direct return to equilibrium, and changing or tunes a resonance.
These circuits connect two useful viewpoints. In time, they describe how stored energy is released after switching. In frequency, they select a range of signals: the resonant series RLC response explains radio tuning and simple filters. The same mathematics describes a damped harmonic oscillator, so insight about mechanical ringing transfers directly to an electrical circuit. [ref]; [ref].
Scalar particle 2026-10-24
A scalar particle has zero intrinsic spin. A scalar-field excitation provides its relativistic description. Spin zero alone does not force its decay matrix element to be independent of internal invariant masses; resonance dynamics can still produce a nonuniform three-body distribution.
Second-order resonance from quadratic oscillator coupling Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
Two fundamental harmonics of frequency one multiply into only a constant and second harmonics. The first-order solvability condition in the method of multiple scales therefore has no amplitude-changing resonant coupling. Their first-order particular corrections can mix back into the fundamental at second order, selecting the possible scale . Detuning may suppress the resulting resonance, so identifying this scale alone does not prove instability for every initial state.
Series-fed parallel LC voltage response Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-25
An ideal voltage source drives a series resistor feeding a parallel inductor and capacitor. In the convention, the branch voltage ratio is the title expression. It is a band-pass response with unit peak at , phase from through zero to , and half-power bandwidth . At resonance the input current vanishes while equal and opposite inductor/capacitor currents remain finite. Reactive branch-current magnitudes must be combined as phasors, not added as positive scalars.
In energy units and , capture of a photon of energy by a massive particle into one resonance satisfies , with . Head-on incidence gives the largest invariant mass at fixed , so the threshold solves . Using gives the title expression. It is the minimum over incident angle; above that energy the exact angle is fixed by the invariant equation, not arbitrary. The soft-photon regime excludes exactly co-propagating incidence.
Spectral line broadening Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-25
The finite width of a spectral line can arise from finite optical coherence or a distribution of resonance frequencies. lifetime broadening and impact-regime pressure broadening often give Lorentzian line shapes; thermal Doppler broadening gives a Gaussian component. The instrument response must also be included when interpreting a measured spectrum.
Stochastic heating 2026-10-24
Increase of particle random kinetic energy due to decorrelating electromagnetic kicks. In the simple unscreened electrostatic white noise limit it is velocity-space diffusion with constant coefficient and heating rate . In other plasma settings the same term can refer to orbit stochasticity produced by spatial structure or overlapping resonances; its precise mechanism must be stated.
Stratified internal-wave guide Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
A stratified layer between unstratified regions can trap internal gravity waves, because the exterior disturbance is an evanescent wave. Its discrete normal modes obey Robin boundary conditions representing the exterior layers. Periodic boundary forcing at a trapped normal mode frequency produces resonance in the ideal undamped model.
Consider fluid at rest with mean depth and a bottom displacement . The linearized free-surface boundary conditions at and moving-bottom kinematic boundary condition at give a periodic particular response and velocity potential
The bottom derivative fixes the signed response coefficient to the title formula. Here , , and the forcing must avoid . This equality is resonance with the natural finite-depth surface gravity wave; nonzero undamped resonant forcing has no bounded periodic solution. The response reverses phase below resonance. General initial data can add free surface gravity waves, which do not decay in this inviscid model. Near resonance the resulting wave steepness and particle excursions, rather than the bottom displacement alone, determine whether the linearization remains valid.
Tide 2026-10-18
A tide is a periodic change in ocean level driven mainly by the differential gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun, together with the Earth's rotation. Their tidal forces act across the extended planet; a uniform acceleration shared by the whole Earth does not by itself generate a tide. Ocean-basin resonance and coastal geometry modify the local response.
For an inviscid flow of constant mass density and depth , impose excess pressure with on a free surface. Neglect surface tension. A travelling solution of the linearized free-surface boundary conditions is
The velocity potential satisfies the Laplace equation and the bed no-penetration boundary condition. Its surface time derivative is , so the dynamic condition gives the displayed signed response. The nonnegative amplitude is . It is finite except at
the squared phase speed of a free surface gravity wave at that wavenumber. Equality produces resonance. This describes a travelling forced component; free surface gravity waves must be added to meet general initial conditions. At exact resonance, a solution of the initial value problem generally grows with time rather than having a bounded periodic amplitude.
In a finite-dimensional undamped linear oscillator, a bounded periodic particular solution can exist away from natural resonances. Adding any homogeneous normal mode gives another solution, and that free motion does not decay. Thus the late-time motion is not determined by the drive alone. At a resonant frequency with nonzero drive projection onto the corresponding mode, the particular solution grows secularly, so no bounded periodic steady response exists.
Underdamped RLC response Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
An underdamped RLC response is a free series RLC circuit response with , equivalently . Its characteristic roots are , and its general electric charge is
For initial conditions , ,
In the dimensionless example , , the ringing angular frequency is , below the driven electric current resonance at . The electric charge first crosses zero at and reaches its first negative extremum at , where .
The sinusoidal factor changes sign while its envelope decays as . The total energy follows the exact balance , rather than a pure exponential decay at every instant; in particular, its rate of loss is zero whenever . As , the displayed solution tends to the lossless harmonic oscillator . As from below, , recovering the critically damped RLC response continuously. The overdamped RLC response reaches the same limit through .
After integrating the overall orientation of a scalar-parent three-body decay, the Lorentz-invariant phase space is constant in two pairwise squared invariant masses. The two-body factorization and the relative-angle Jacobian give the displayed density. The event density includes and need not be flat: a resonance produces bands. Identical-particle counting supplies its usual global symmetry factor.
Vibration isolation 2026-10-18
Vibration isolation reduces the transmission of unwanted mechanical oscillations between an apparatus and its surroundings. Compliant supports and damping can reduce transmitted motion, but their effectiveness depends on the disturbance frequency and the support's resonance.
An equivariant dynamical system can contain the monomial in its th amplitude equation only if its total wavevector equals the output wavevector. Its degree is . Thus an integer vector contributes at degree exactly when the wavevector equation holds, , and is even. The extra even degree is supplied by factors . This finite integer test distinguishes regular saturation terms from phase-sensitive resonance terms.
Wireless telegraphy 2026-10-18
Wireless telegraphy conveys discrete symbols without a connecting message wire. Here the mechanism is radio communication: keyed excitation produces radio waves, a receiving antenna drives a selective electrical circuit, and a detector produces a readable event. This makes a beautiful bridge between resonance and information: accumulating many appropriately timed small electrical disturbances can distinguish one transmission from another. Selectivity is finite, however; resonance alone cannot guarantee immunity to strong unwanted signals or noise.
The 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics recognized Guglielmo Marconi and Karl Ferdinand Braun for contributions to wireless telegraphy.[ref] Their apparatus should be understood as a developing collection of systems. An early coherer receiver, a later tuned receiver and a modern envelope detector are different instruments.
