Artist unknown, uploaded December 2014. Part of Section "Cool data embedded in the Bitcoin blockchain" where Ciro Santilli maintains a curated list of such interesting inscriptions.

This was a small project done by Ciro for artistic purposes that received some attention due to the incredible hype surrounding cryptocurrencies at the time. Ciro Santilli's views on cryptocurrencies are summarized at: Section "Are cryptocurrencies useful?".

Ciro Santilli found this image and others during his research for Section "Cool data embedded in the Bitcoin blockchain" by searching for image fingerprints on every transaction payload of the blockchain with a script.
The image was uploaded by EMBII, co-creator of the AtomSea & EMBII upload mechanism, which was responsible for a large part of the image inscriptions in the Bitcoin blockchain.
The associated message reads:

This is one of Ciro Santilli's favorite AtomSea & EMBII uploads, as it perfectly encapsules the "medium as an art form" approach to blockchain art, where even non-novel works can be recontextualized into something interesting, here depicting an opposition between the ephemeral and the immutable.
At twitter.com/EMBII4U/status/1615389973343268871 EMBII announced that he would be giving off shares of that image on Sup!?, a Bitcoin-backed NFT system he was; making. In December 2023, he gave some shares of the robot to Ciro Santilli.

This website was used as one of the CIA 2010 covert communication websites, a covert system the CIA used to communicate with its assets. More details at: Section "CIA 2010 covert communication websites".
Ciro Santilli had some naughty OSINT fun finding some of the websites of this defunct network in 2023 after he heard about the 2022 Reuters report on the matter, which for the first time gave away 7 concrete websites out of a claimed 885 total found. As of November 2023, Ciro had found about 350 of them.

This is another website that was used as one of the CIA 2010 covert communication websites. This website is written in Brazilian Portuguese, and therefore suggests that the CIA had assets in Brazil at the time, and thus was spying on a "fellow democracy".
Although Snowden's revelations made it extremely obvious to the world that the USA spies upon everyone outside of the Five Eyes, including fellow democracies, it is rare to have such a direct a concrete proof of it visible live right on the Wayback Machine. Other targeted democracies include France, Germany, Italy and Spain. More details at: USA spying on its own allies.

This is a for-fun-only prototype for Ciro's 2D reinforcement learning games, C++ or maybe Python (for the deep learning ecosystem) seems inevitable for a serious version of such a project. The concept is a strong part of Water Margin.

The very first chapter opens with Grand Commander Hou disrespecting spirits by opening up a sealed tomb and unintentionally releasing 108 demons who presumably reincarnate as humans, a backstory to the events that follow years later.

This is well shown in the Japanese The Water Margin, but is skipped in the Chinese The Water Margin unfortunately.

The concept is also central to the Suikoden video game.

Actually, now that Ciro Santilli thinks about it, these were already likely meant as a "collectible" element by the author of the original book, as is strongly suggested by all the little illustrations of each character present on the Wikipedia page. Just like e.g. Catholic saints. It's Pokemon, but 2000 years earlier.

Ciro would notably feel many years later, that as he met random people online who were interested in improving eduction, or was otherwise networking to reach his goals, as if he were actually building up his 108 stars of destiny.

A central part, and perhaps the most interesting part of the novel, is how each character has been motivated by injustice to join the rebellion. This reminds Ciro of Final Fantasy VI

In 1914, Fermi, who used to often meet with his father in front of the office after work, met a colleague of his father called Adolfo Amidei, who would walk part of the way home with Alberto [Enrico's father]. Enrico had learned that Adolfo was interested in mathematics and physics and took the opportunity to ask Adolfo a question about geometry. Adolfo understood that the young Fermi was referring to projective geometry and then proceeded to give him a book on the subject written by Theodor Reye. Two months later, Fermi returned the book, having solved all the problems proposed at the end of the book, some of which Adolfo considered difficult. Upon verifying this, Adolfo felt that Fermi was "a prodigy, at least with respect to geometry", and further mentored the boy, providing him with more books on physics and mathematics. Adolfo noted that Fermi had a very good memory and thus could return the books after having read them because he could remember their content very well.

Ciro Santilli really likes guys like this. Given that he does not have the right genetics, conditions and temperance for scientific greatness in this lifetime, he dreams of one day finding his own Fermi instead.

How an atomic clock works, and its use in the global positioning system (GPS) by EngineerGuy (2012)

Source. Shows how conceptually an atomic clock is based on a feedback loop of two hyperfine structure states of caesium atoms (non-radioactive caesium-133 as clarified by the Wikipedia page). Like a quartz clock, it also relies on the piezoelectricity of quartz, but unlike the quartz clock, the quartz is not shaped like a tuning fork, and has a much larger resonating frequency of about 7 MHz. The feedback is completed by producing photons that resonate at the right frequency to excite the caesium.

A similar model was used in the Hafele-Keating experiment to test special relativity on two planes flying in opposite directions. Miniaturization was key.

Contains a disposable tube with 6g of Caesium. You boil it, so when it runs out, you change the tube, 40k USD. Their tube is made by Agilent Technologies, so a replacement since that opened in 1999, and the original machine is from the 60s.

Detection is done with an electron multiplier.

He divorced from Larry's mother Gloria in 1980 or 1981, "when he [Page] was eight years old" according to The Google Story. He then moved on to Joyce Wildenthal, another MSU professor. Larry had a good relation with both Gloria and Joyce:

Larry came to feel that he was showered with love and wisdom from two mothers: his real mom, and Joyce Wildenthal, a Michigan State professor who had a long-term relationship with his dad.

During his teenage years, Ciro created an innovative new dance style combining elements of the various corporal practices that he studied a bit of across the years:

Ciro later called this style Cirodance.

Ciro's legendary dance style was famous during his university years, when Ciro would go to parties and dance like made while mostly unsuccessfully trying to woo girls.

Ciro has always been critical of dancing conditions in University parties, where people would always be cramped up doing boring non-creative moves. Rather, Ciro would go to to the edges of the dance floor to have enough space for his amazing moves. There is a perhaps a parallel between such tendencies and Ciro's highly innovative personality. Also perhaps being cramped would have helped wooing said girls.

Ciro later quit dancing, to a large extent because it is too hard to find suitable dancing locations outside: Europe is too cold much of the year, also ground conditions have to be perfect, and no patience to book a dance room somewhere. Kid's playgrounds are ideal, but Ciro is afraid of dancing there because kids parent's would freak out.

Therefore, all evidence of Cirodance seems to have disappeared into the depths of the Internet. There used to be a notorious video on YouTube from around June 2010 entitled "A Piriguete da Poli !!" ("Poli's bitch" in Portuguese) with comment "Sem comentarios... foi a atraçao da cervejada" (No comments... was the main attraction of the beer party) dancing the Piriguete by MC Papo Brazilian Funk carioca song. But the video was removed at some point, they were likely afraid of getting sued, the URL was www.youtube.com/watch?v=T969azGjIeE as shown at www.facebook.com/cirosantilli/posts/133333123357495, but this was before Ciro noticed that every good thing on the web goes down and became an obsessive web archiver. But in any case, the title gives an idea of the amazing style of Ciro's furor poeticus Axé performance on that day. If the video owner ever reads this message, please please restore the video, or send Ciro a copy. TODO: which channel was it on? Knowing that Ciro would be able to try and contact them.

One legendary episode linked to Cirodance was when Ciro was living in Paris and jobless around 2014 (but not destitute as he leached from his girlfriend). Cirodance was his main physical activity at the time, and Place de la République, where the skateboarders hung out due to the perfect wide concrete floor and relatively close to Bastille where Ciro lived, was the perfect place for it. One cold dark winter evening, Ciro was practicing Cirodance with his headphones and crappy clothes (dirty public square floor, remember), when someone took him for a homeless person and offered him a bowl of soup! It must be said that Place de la République had many events of giving food to the poor. Ciro was a bit stunned, declined, and continued dancing. And so that was the day when a prestigious Polytechnicien was mistaken for a homeless person. And Ciro liked that.

As of 2021, Googling "cirodance" leads to www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyvv4ddL2so "Ciro Dance" in which comedian "Ciro Priello" (no Wikipedia page at the time) participates in a comedy show with a "silly dance" (TODO this likely has a name) described in the comments as:

Sun Wukong (孙悟空) is a playful and obscenely powerful monkey Journey to the West. He protects Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang, and likes eating fruit, just like Ciro. Oh, and Goku from Dragon Ball is based on him. His japanese name is "Sun Wukong" (same Chinese characters with different Japanese pronunciation) for the love. His given name "Wukong" means literally "the one who mastered the void", which is clearly a Dharma name and fucking awesome in multiple ways. This is another sad instance of a Chinese thing better known in the West as Japanese.
It is worth noting however that although Wukong is extremely charming, Ciro's favorite novel of the Four Great Classic Novels is Water Margin. Journey to the West is just a Monster of the Week for kids, but Water Margin is a fight for justice saga. Sorry Wukong!

And in the process of greater openess, given a well organized system, we are able combine the knowledge of many diffferent people, and thus make things more understandable than any single/few creator closed source source could ever achieve.
Ciro once saw some cartoon on Wikipedia help pages of a turtle with a book in one hand, and typing into Wikipedia on its computer, TODO find it. That cartoon summarizes well the modern scribe life.
Another analogous version of this fantasy more in touch with Ciro's sinophily is the ideal of the Chinese scholar, notably including their stereotypical attributes such as mastery of the Four arts.

"The Hashling" presumably refers to a cute fictional crab-like animal that somehow inhabits the alternate reality created Blockchain network's incredible hashrate. Yet another souless NFT collection would later be created with that name as well: magiceden.io/ordinals/marketplace/hashlings.B
But that is not all! Immediately after the ASCII art encoded as one constant, the remaining constants of the input script except for the last one encode a raw PNG image with a hand drawing of the creature:
The last constant is then the only thing that matters and spends the incoming output.
The ASCII art and image are also inscribed 16 more times on the blockchain: github.com/cirosantilli/bitcoin-inscription-indexer/blob/master/data/hashling. 453c9511ca76361c8c44b4302ce1b5d8d5c98a938b548478ef931baaa7d70e62 also has the image without any ASCII strings.

Viva la Revolucion! Happy Birthday Santi! Manu, Santi, Demi, Estebanand starts a long chain of contiguous transactions that renders Santi's face twice in low resolution. They are encoded one line every two transactions with OP_RETURN:
first face: 1890addb8afaeb7eabfa9f0fe9bb3ab0bdfdbe939e407618d6e335d6fc3d376f to f06ae6f454dfb064088f87f0684a5a541374ae573e6a6323196facad53f992cb (both in block 278022)

Both blocks were mined by AntPool, so they weren't mining themselves to enforce ordering. So how is ordering assured? TODO are transactions actually contiguous in the block or are there other transactions interspersed? According to:

The message is encoded with OP_RETURN payloads across multiple transactions, 40 bytes per transaction. They actually managed to upload two almost fully consecutive transaction blocks and in the correct order. Could they be miners?

Some of the payloads contain newlines, you are just supposed to paste all payloads together to form the image. Our reconstruction here is manual however, lazy to script it properly.

Is in Dutch of course, literally:

skillfully regulating the order of the day

Given the date and language, it appears to be a reference to Koningsdag, Dutch national holiday that celebrated the birthday of their King at the time, King Willem-Alexander. Born in 1956, he would have been turning 60 at the time, so a nice round number in 2016 when these birthday candles were inscribed.

It is encoded one line per transaction with OP_RETURN, but the ordering is completely scrambled. a reference to OP_RETURN. It is steganographically encoded diagonally across the skull's eyes. Ciro Santilli only saw this after grepping:

This image was uploaded one line per transaction with a few interruptions that we removed manually, and there were was a previous partial attempt a bit before: at tx f8102999c0aaf7681deec383eb8e7946f093e94a116a21e367e9ed6b7c32d1fb so either a failure, or maybe it was intentional to obfuscate things a bit.

tx 71d9187cbb7b00b4c516df218499bbc301996262cfafc4533fd7916af1fb6315, block 709632, (2021-11-14) starts a consecutive sequence of transactions that encodes the characters 'Z' and 'N', an ad for the Zenon Network blockchain. This is the very first taproot enabled block, foreshadowing the great inscription boom that taproot would lead to, notably in the form of ordinal ruleset inscriptions.

This ASCII art had been previously noted by sroose and decoded by brando2131 on Reddit, and was brought to our attention by Bagfoot OP446 on twitter. Ciro Santilli had previously spotted the art, but failed to decode it. "ZENON NETWORK" is inscribed just after the art confiming the meaning of the characters, but it does not appear in our ASCII dumps presumably because the string it is too short and surrounded by non-ASCII.
Each line is encoded with OP_RETURN, is 38 bytes long, and starts and ends in 6 spaces, leading to 26 non-whitespace characters per line. The lines appear in scambled order and it is unclear if there is any logic in the ordering or if it was just meant as a little puzzle. But given the nearby "ZENON NETWORK" inscription, this decoding is overwhelmingly likely correct.

They seem like Base64 encoded data due to the = sign padding, but nothing human readable comes out of them, so their meaning remains currently unknown.

The cool thing about this image is that it highlights the striking parallels between the encoding of the Arecibo message with crypto graffiti, because in both cases people were creating undocumented new ways of communicating with strangers on a new medium in those early blockchain days.
The associated message contains the Arecibo message as ASCII 0's and 1's. When properly cut at the newlines, they draw the message as ASCII art, as the original Arecibo encoding intends, here's a version with the 0's replaced by spaces to make it more readabale:

Tribute to computer security researcher Len Sassaman, who killed himself on 2011-07-03, starting with an ASCII art portrait followed by text.

Because it comes so early in the blockchain, and because it is the first ASCII art on the blochain as far as we can see, and because is so well done, this is by far the most visible ASCII art of the Bitcoin blockchain.

"Bernanke" is a reference to Ben Bernanke, who was one of the economists in power in the US Government during the financial crisis of 2007-2008, and much criticized by some, as shown for example in the documentary Inside Job (2010). As hinted in the Genesis block message, the United States Government bailed out many big banks that were going to go bankrupt with taxpayer money, even though it was precisly those banks that had started the crisis through their reckless investment, thus violating principles of the free market and business accountability. This was one of the motivations for the creation Bitcoin, which could reduce government power over economic policy.

It is worth mentioning that there do exist some slightly earlier "artistic" inscriptions in the form Punycode inscription in the Namecoin blockchain, but as far as we've seen, the are all trivial compared to BitLen in terms of artistic value/size.

Ciro Santilli first thought it might beto be a dialect of Italian, or possibly Sicilian language given the presence of "sv" in the text, but an Italian friend says it is just Italian with several words cut in half, possibly for comedic effect. No pre-existing hits found on the web.
