Closed-graph criterion with compact codomain Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-09-24
If are metric spaces, is compact, and the graph of is closed, then is continuous. Any failure of sequential continuity gives a subsequence whose images stay away from the proposed limit; compactness produces a convergent image subsequence, and closedness of the graph forces its limit to be the correct value.

Chemical equilibrium Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
At chemical equilibrium, a reversible chemical reaction has equal forward and reverse reaction rates, so its macroscopic composition stays constant. Individual molecules can keep changing identity: the reaction has not stopped. This dynamic balance is the definition described by the [ref]. Equal reaction rates also need not mean equal concentrations. A small population converting rapidly can balance a large population converting slowly.
This distinction gives two useful questions. Which composition is favored at the specified temperature and other constraints? Thermodynamics answers through chemical potentials and an equilibrium constant. How quickly does a prepared mixture approach that composition? Chemical kinetics answers through reaction rates. Knowing the destination does not determine the journey's duration. A composition that barely changes during observation may reflect extremely slow chemical kinetics, so constancy alone does not establish chemical equilibrium.
Consider the idealized elementary chemical reaction
Assume a well-mixed closed system at fixed temperature and volume, with first-order law of mass action rates in both directions and no competing chemical reactions. Write and for concentrations in . The total is conserved because each conversion replaces one molecule by one molecule. This conservation is special to the chosen stoichiometry.
The forward and reverse reaction rates, measured as conversions per unit volume per unit time, are and . Hence
Setting this derivative to zero gives
With and , solving the ordinary differential equation yields
At , these are approximately and . Initially and . At chemical equilibrium, both are , while the net reaction rate is zero. The persistent exchange is visible in the lower panel even after the upper panel has nearly flattened.
Figure 1.
Constant equilibrium composition with continuing molecular conversion
. The idealized chemical reaction starts entirely in A. Upper panel: concentrations. Lower panel: forward, reverse and net reaction rates. The equilibrium rates coincide at a positive value. Details.
Why does chemical equilibrium also involve a free energy minimum? For a closed system at fixed temperature and pressure, without imposed non-expansion work, stable equilibrium minimizes Gibbs free energy over compositions allowed by conserved elemental inventories. See W. C. Carter, MIT thermodynamics notes, sections 2-1.14 and 2-1.19. This is constrained Gibbs minimization for chemical equilibrium: freely minimizing over unrelated species amounts would change the inventory. At fixed temperature and volume, the appropriate potential is Helmholtz free energy. In either setting, varying an allowed extent of reaction gives the corresponding free energy slope , with molar chemical potentials and signed stoichiometric vector entries. An interior equilibrium has zero slope; stability requires a minimum. For A converting to B, this says .
The beauty of this connection is that molecular exchange, a macroscopic composition, and a geometric minimum describe the same balance. In the ideal concentration model, let and choose the standard molar chemical potential difference consistent with . Up to a composition-independent constant, the fixed-volume Helmholtz free energy then obeys
where is the conserved total amount of substance and the molar gas constant. Its derivative is , vanishing at . Its second derivative is inside , so this balance is the unique minimum. The mixing entropy terms explain why the favored composition still contains A.
Elementary lower bound for the Chebyshev theta function Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
The Chebyshev theta function satisfies for every sufficiently large real number . This follows without the Prime number theorem.
Write for the second Chebyshev function. The largest binomial coefficient in row is the central one, and that row sums to , so
By the Legendre formula, the prime valuation of this central binomial coefficient is a sum of terms , each zero or one. Hence the coefficient divides , whose natural logarithm is . Taking logarithms gives , the central-coefficient argument of Chebyshev estimate from central binomial coefficients.
For real , take . Monotonicity gives . Higher prime powers contribute at most to , as proved for the second Chebyshev function. Therefore
After division by , the right side tends to , proving the stated lower bound.

Monic Chebyshev extremal polynomial Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
For an integer , the monic polynomial uniquely minimizes the uniform norm on among real monic polynomials of degree . The minimum norm is . The normalization uses the leading coefficient of the Chebyshev polynomial .
At the alternating extrema of , a strictly smaller competitor would make its difference from change sign at least times. That difference has degree at most , a contradiction; the equioscillation theorem also gives uniqueness. The degree-zero case is separate: the only monic polynomial of degree zero is , whose norm is , not .

Canonical momentum parallel to a uniform magnetic field Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
Let a nonzero constant uniform magnetic field point along , and choose the symmetric gauge
For the charged-particle electromagnetic Lagrangian, the canonical momentum parallel to the field is , equal to the mechanical momentum in this gauge. Its equation is
Thus is a cyclic coordinate and this canonical momentum is conserved when the scalar electric potential is independent of , equivalently when here. A uniform magnetic field alone is insufficient: choosing adds a parallel electric field and gives .
The Lorentz force from the magnetic field has no component along that field. This physical statement is gauge independent, whereas equality of canonical momentum and mechanical momentum uses the stated gauge; a gauge transformation can change a canonical momentum component by .

Characteristic function of a sum of independent variables Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-18
Independence makes the characteristic function of a sum equal the product of the individual characteristic functions.
For mutually independent random variables , write . Then
This is the expectation of a product of independent random variables applied to bounded complex exponentials; no moment hypothesis is needed.[ref]
Identical probability distributions are unnecessary. When the random variables are independent and identically distributed random variables, the product is . A deterministic rescaling also follows directly from the definition: for real . Consequently the sample mean has characteristic function , and a sum divided by has characteristic function .
The independence assumption does real work. Let take and with equal probabilities and set . Both characteristic functions are , but , not . At they give and zero respectively. Knowing the two marginal probability distributions does not determine the sum without their joint probability distribution.

Weakly symmetric channel capacity Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-25
For a discrete memoryless channel with output symbols, suppose every row of the transition matrix is a permutation of every other row and all column sums agree. Such a communication channel has
The row Shannon entropy is the same for every input, so has that fixed value for every input probability distribution. The remaining term is at most by maximum entropy on a finite alphabet.
A uniform input attains the bound. If there are input symbols, the total of all transition probabilities in the matrix is ; equal column sums must therefore each be . Multiplication by the uniform input mass gives output mass in each column. Hence , which proves the displayed formula. The cyclic ternary channel capacity, binary symmetric channel capacity, and ternary symmetric channel capacity are concrete applications of this symmetry calculation.
