Antibaryon Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-18
An antibaryon is the antiparticle of a baryon. In the valence quark model it consists of three antiquarks in a colour singlet. Charge conjugation reverses its additive charges and third component of isospin, preserving total isospin and spin.
Baryon magnetic moment 2026-10-24
In the additive ground-state quark model, a baryon magnetic moment is the expectation of in its spin-and-flavor wavefunction, with constituent quark masses . For a spin-up proton and neutron this gives and . Approximately equal up and down constituent masses imply and . This is evidence for the valence quark model, not proof that sea quark-antiquark pairs are absent.
B meson 2026-10-18
A meson containing a bottom quark or its antiquark partner. The neutral pair and undergoes neutral meson mixing.
The approximate equality of proton and neutron parton distribution functions after interchanging up quarks and down quarks, including their antiquarks. It follows from the corresponding isospin symmetry when electromagnetic and light-quark mass-difference effects are neglected. Isospin-singlet sea distributions are unchanged.

Color charge 2026-10-05
Color charge is the gauge group charge of Quantum chromodynamics, associated with its symmetry. A quark transforms in the fundamental three-dimensional representation, an antiquark in its conjugate, and a lepton is a singlet. The word color is a label for this charge, unrelated to visible light.
Color multiplicity in a decay width Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
For a colorless parent decaying through a color-diagonal interaction into a quark and antiquark, the three orthogonal matching-color states add incoherently. The inclusive flavor decay width is times the one-color width. In a parton scattering rate, an initial color average instead cancels the matching final color sum.
Diquark Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
A correlated pair of quarks. Its color, flavor, spin and orbital states are separate degrees of freedom and must collectively satisfy Fermi statistics. In flavor SU(3), the antisymmetric pair space is ; contraction with the invariant Levi-Civita symbol realizes the isomorphism. The antisymmetric flavor pair is an isospin singlet with flavor hypercharge . Combining two such flavor-antitriplet pairs with a strange antiquark permits the highest weight of the pentaquark antidecuplet; this flavor construction does not itself establish a bound state.
Elementary charge Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
The elementary charge is the positive magnitude of the electron's electric charge, not the signed electric charge of the electron itself:Since the 2019 revision of the SI, this numerical value defines the ampere together with the definition of the second; . Thus today's numerical exactness is a choice of units, whereas measured electric charges still have experimental uncertainty. An oil drop experiment can test charge quantization and the apparatus calibration; it does not supply a new uncertain defining value of in today's SI. [ref]

.For ordinary isolated chemical atoms, ions and charged objects whose net electric charge is counted through protons and electrons, charge quantization gives with signed integer . A neutral chemical atom that loses two electrons becomes an ion of electric charge . A toy object with excess electrons has . Conversely, the scale explains why laboratory electric charge often looks continuous: billions of microscopic increments fit into a small macroscopic amount. Averaged charge density is a continuum description, not a claim that each particle has an arbitrarily divisible electric charge.
The ordinary-matter qualifier matters. In the Standard Model, quarks have electric charges or , and antiquarks have the opposite signs. Confinement means these are constituents of hadrons, not isolated fractionally charged particles collected by an oil drop experiment. The usual valence quark sums give for a proton and for a neutron. Thus elementary charge should not be defined as the smallest nonzero electric charge of every constituent in particle theory. [ref]

.The beautiful experimental idea behind the oil drop experiment is to determine a microscopic electric charge by watching a visible carrier move. In his 1913 paper, Millikan timed the descent and electrically driven ascent of individual oil drops, repeatedly changing a drop's electric charge through capture of air ions. His apparatus used parallel plates separated by , a roughly source, and an optical scale to measure travel distances. He reported multiple relationships among a given drop's inferred electric charges. He also found that uncorrected Stokes's law gave a size-dependent inferred elementary unit, and introduced a pressure-dependent slip correction. These were measured relationships with calibration and model uncertainties, not exact readings of today's defined . [ref]

.A modern instructional implementation sprays low-volatility oil of known density through a plate aperture, illuminates the drops, and follows one through a calibrated optical scale. Measure the plate spacing , electric potential difference , air temperature and pressure. Time a fixed distance with the electric field off to get a terminal falling speed . Then choose the field polarity to drive the same drop upward and measure . Repeat timings at a fixed electric charge, and compare before and after an ion-capture event. The same drop is especially useful because its radius and mass need not be inferred anew for each charge state. [ref]

.Here is the leading continuum model, retaining buoyancy. Assume a drop shaped as a sphere of radius , oil and air densities and , air dynamic viscosity , and gravitational acceleration . Define the downward effective weight and positive linear drag coefficient byAt terminal velocity, the net force vanishes. Falling with no electric field, the upward drag force balances weight minus buoyancy. Rising with the electric force upward, the drag force reverses and joins the downward effective weight:Consequently the uncorrected estimates areThe observed direction of response, with known field polarity, supplies the sign of . A suspended drop gives the alternative balance , but it still requires a determination of : balancing a drop alone does not determine its electric charge.
For an explicitly invented continuum example, stipulate , , , , , and a downward . The balances predict , and . Substituting those speeds recovers within rounding. This checks the algebra; it is not a precision prediction for real micrometre drops, which need a slip correction.
The inference has two distinct parts. Compare inferred electric charges or charge changes with a common unit, seeking within uncertainty, rather than demanding exact ratios of rounded measurements. Then establish the absolute scale through electric field, density, dynamic viscosity and distance/time calibration. If the observed steps are all even multiples, their common spacing alone cannot exclude an unobserved smaller unit. Air motion, evaporation and mistimed crossings can alter inferred electric charge without an ion-capture event. Small Reynolds number supports Stokes's law, but does not by itself justify its no-slip continuum coefficient: a significant ratio of air mean free path to drop radius requires a slip correction. Millikan's comparison of different drop sizes and pressures addressed that systematic limitation; the modern PASCO manual also includes the correction. Agreement supports charge quantization for the observed carriers within experimental resolution, rather than proving a universal statement about every possible particle.
Multiplying by the Avogadro constant gives the Faraday constant, , the electric charge per mole of singly charged carriers. This connects counting individual electric charges with bulk electrochemistry. [ref]

. Four-flavour meson multiplet 2026-10-25
Four quark flavours in the defining representation of flavour SU(4) and their antiquarks give sixteen meson flavour states. The trace of is the trivial representation; its traceless part is the Adjoint representation. Under light-flavour SU(3), the full content is . Relative to the light-flavour nonet, the new states are . Inside the traceless fifteen-dimensional multiplet the additional singlet is instead . The pure state is a linear combination of this state and the full SU(4) singlet. The classification concerns flavour; it does not imply degenerate physical masses or fix spin.
Gluon splitting 2026-10-25
A QCD branching in which a gluon produces a quark-antiquark pair or two gluons. Quark-pair production supplies a perturbative source of sea quarks. Its rates depend on scale and on the allowed daughter quark masses.

Meson doublets with one isospin-singlet quark Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
An isospin-zero quark paired with or gives a meson isospin doublet of charges . Spin addition at zero orbital angular momentum gives both pseudoscalar mesons and vector mesons. Pairing the new antiquark with gives the charge-conjugate doublets. For strange or charm flavour these are the kaon or D-meson families and their vector partners.
Meson parity and charge conjugation 2026-10-14
For an ordinary quark-antiquark meson, opposite intrinsic parities and orbital parity give . For a self-conjugate flavor state, charge conjugation exchanges the two constituents. Reversal of their relative momentum gives , spin exchange gives , and reordering the two fermionic creation operators gives one extra minus sign. Their product is . Electrical neutrality alone does not imply that a state is an eigenstate of charge conjugation; charged mesons have no individual C eigenvalue.
Net quark flavor number 2026-10-25
The number of quarks of quark flavor minus the number of corresponding antiquarks. The strong interaction and electromagnetic interaction conserve each such difference even when they create or annihilate pairs. Weak charged currents can change these differences. For the strange quark, strangeness is .
Neutrino scattering on an antiquark 2026-10-06
For a massless neutrino scattering on an unpolarized up antiquark through the Fermi interaction, . The corresponding down-quark channel has . Their difference follows from the chiral weak-current trace contraction. The parton distribution functions weight these rates in a hadron.
Parton model 2026-10-05
A high-energy hadron is treated as constituents scattering incoherently. In electromagnetic deep inelastic scattering, the charged constituents are quarks and antiquarks.
There is one tree-level Feynman diagram: annihilation of the up quark and its antiquark into an -channel gluon, followed by production of the down quark and its antiquark. A gluon interaction vertex preserves quark flavor, so a -channel line joining the incoming up quark to the outgoing down quark is impossible.

For the usual colour SU(3) fixing the fourth coordinate of the SU(4) defining representation,Taking the exterior square givesThe identification follows by contracting an antisymmetric tensor with the invariant three-index Levi-Civita symbol. Combining this with c gives all colour multiplets:A colour triplet has the color charge transformation law of a quark, an antitriplet that of an antiquark, and a colour singlet is colour-neutral, as a lepton is. Thus both parent representations permit quark-like and antiquark-like colour sectors; the vector has one neutral sector and the spinor two. These are colour assignments only. They do not determine particle spin, statistics, electric charge, weak quantum numbers or a full generation of the Standard Model. In a real parent field the conjugate colour sectors may describe one complex colour field and its conjugate, rather than independent particle species.
Global group qualification. The printed chain is correct at the Lie algebra level, . Globally its simply connected form is . The standard map of SU(4) into through has a nontrivial kernel: the concrete central element acts as on and trivially on the singlet representation. Its image is , rather than an injective copy of SU(4) under this map.
The global form obstruction for the Spin7 spinor is explicit: the central element of the Spin group maps to the identity in but acts as on the eight-dimensional spin representation. Equivalently acts as on both and in its restriction. Therefore the spinor does not descend to a genuine SO(7) group representation. A theory containing that spinor needs the Spin group global form, or must understand the source's notation as specifying only its Lie algebra. The displayed colour branchings remain valid with this correction.

The commuting direction in solution provides the correct candidate Lie algebra for a gauge group, . This is a necessary structural condition for the Standard Model, but it does not by itself establish a viable grand unified theory.
The representations in solution do not give a Standard Model fermion generation with the correct weak hypercharges. Use . Identifying with the left-handed quark doublet, whose weak hypercharge is , fixes . But then the doublet in has , whereas the left-handed lepton doublet requires . Its singlet has , whereas a right-handed electron requires . The is a further concrete mismatch: right-handed quarks written as left-handed antiquarks require or , and a rescaling cannot turn zero into either value. These comparisons use the electroweak representation and hypercharge table.
The charge- doublet in does have the required lepton weak hypercharge under this normalization, but the same Adjoint representation also brings a doublet of the opposite charge and an extra triplet. Therefore merely adding that representation does not supply the missing chiral generation without additional states and a mechanism for their masses.
Furthermore is a product of two Simple Lie groups, permitting two independent gauge couplings; it does not enforce a common strong and electroweak gauge coupling. Thus the embedding exists, but the displayed matter content does not furnish a viable minimal unification of the Standard Model. A more elaborate model would require additional representations, consistent chiral matter, anomaly cancellation, and a specified spontaneous symmetry breaking mechanism. The calculations here do not prove that every possible extension using this product group is impossible.
