For positive background velocity and buoyancy frequency , a stationary nonzero-horizontal-wavenumber Taylor–Goldstein equation reduces to the displayed constant-coefficient equation. Its structures are oscillatory, affine or exponential according to the sign of . The disturbance Laplacian is a constant times its streamfunction, but its buoyancy anomaly is . Therefore vorticity self-advection vanishes while buoyancy self-advection produces a nonzero second harmonic for . These nontrivial real linear modes are not exact finite-amplitude solutions without additional fields. For , both polarizations are constant and these nonlinear self-interactions vanish.
Floating equilibrium 2026-10-14
A freely floating body at rest has no supporting contact or applied holding force. Neglecting surface tension and the buoyancy of air, its upward buoyancy balances its downward force from gravity:For a body of uniform mass density and total volume , its mass is . Substitution into Archimedes' principle givesPartial immersion is possible when . A nonuniform body uses its mean mass density instead; for a hollow body this volume must count the enclosed space that excludes water. This explains how the amount of displaced water can support a vessel whose walls alone are denser than water. [ref]
For the cube in water of mass density , the displaced fraction is : sixty percent of its volume lies below the surface. With a horizontal top and bottom, the immersed depth satisfies , soIts remaining height is , and the buoyancy is , exactly balancing its downward force from gravity.
Gas-globe density measurement 2026-10-18
In an idealized rigid-globe weighing, subtract the evacuated assembly's mass from the filled assembly's mass, then divide by the internal volume. Establish the filled sample's pressure and temperature before comparing gases. The subtraction removes the container's large contribution, making a small gas contribution accessible. A real measurement also needs corrections or bounds for residual gas, adsorption, leaks, changing vessel volume and external buoyancy. The Rayleigh-Ramsay argon density experiment shows why preparation-route comparisons add information beyond repeated weighings of one sample.
Gravity drainage of sea-ice brine 2026-10-14
Dense saline liquid in connected pore space can drain from sea ice while fresher seawater enters. The process is controlled by buoyancy, permeability of a porous medium and network connectivity, and is a major means of growing-ice desalination.

Gravity wave 2026-10-05
A gravity wave is a fluid disturbance restored by gravity or buoyancy. A surface gravity wave displaces a free surface, while an internal gravity wave displaces density surfaces within a stratified fluid. Rotation can additionally contribute to restoration, giving an inertia-gravity wave.
Horizontal convection 2026-10-14
Horizontal convection is buoyancy-driven circulation forced by lateral variations of temperature along one horizontal boundary. Hot and cold surface regions drive a circulation even though all thermal forcing is applied at the same height. An insulated bottom and sides require zero net heat exchange through the remaining surface in steady state, but permit heat to enter its warmer region and leave its colder region.
Hydrostatic pressure Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-13
Hydrostatic pressure is the pressure distribution in a resting fluid, balancing its body force from gravity. Take upward and a uniform downward gravitational field , where . The vertical pressure gradient satisfiesA short derivation balances the vertical forces on a thin horizontal layer of area and thickness : . Dividing by and taking the derivative gives the equation above. For constant mass density , integration from the surface at givesThus pressure increases with depth . For the stipulated water with mass density and gravitational acceleration , depths and give gauge pressures and . Their difference produces the buoyancy of the example cube. [ref]

Inclined forced plume 2026-10-05
An inclined forced plume curves upward under buoyancy. In a stationary homogeneous ambient, its horizontal momentum flux is conserved and its vertical momentum flux increases. For kinematic plume fluxes, and , where and the derivative is with respect to centreline arc length.
Interfacial gravity wave Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
An interfacial gravity wave is a displacement of an interface between two fluids of different mass density, restored by buoyancy when the denser fluid is below. For two deep layers in the Boussinesq approximation, density difference and horizontal wavenumber give intrinsic squared phase velocity . Background flow shifts the laboratory phase velocity by its local speed.
A horizontal flux tube displaced without bending preserves by magnetic flux freezing. If thermal exchange keeps its temperature equal to its new surroundings, lateral magnetic pressure balance gives . Here , , and primes denote the response to a small vertical displacement from an equilibrium. Its linear buoyancy acceleration is . Thus local interchange is unstable when , equivalently . This fast-thermal-exchange criterion differs from the adiabatic localized interchange criterion for a magnetized atmosphere.
Lift (force) 2026-10-13
Lift is the component of the fluid force perpendicular to the far-field flow relative to the body. It need not point vertically: a tilted flow changes the lift direction, and a banked wing can produce a sideways component. In a planar problem choose a unit vector along the incoming relative velocity and a perpendicular unit vector pointing towards the chosen positive-lift side. ThenHere is drag and is signed lift; means a force towards the opposite side. In three dimensions the plane perpendicular to also admits a separate side-force direction, so a lift axis must be specified. Lift is also distinct from buoyancy, which can exist without a relative flow. [ref]

The force comes from adding local surface tractions, rather than assigning a single pressure to each side. Let be the wetted body surface and its unit normal vector pointing out of the body into the fluid. The pressure contribution pushes inwards; the viscous stress tensor also contributes, including tangential shear stress:Using a constant reference pressure is legitimate on a closed surface because . This surface integral makes the direction explicit: a surface-normal force is generally neither pure lift nor pure drag. Pressure and skin shear stress both enter the resultant, although the pressure term usually dominates lift on an airfoil. [ref]

The lift coefficient isolates a useful scale. For a finite wing of reference area (normally its projected planform area), and for a two-dimensional airfoil section of chord length , respectively,Here is dynamic pressure, is far-field mass density, and is lift per unit span, with units . The signs of and follow the chosen lift axis. For stipulated values , , and , and . Doubling gives four times the lift only if stays fixed: changes in Reynolds number, Mach number, surface condition or angle of attack can change it. [ref]

A motivating experiment is to compare two independently observed quantities: the lift registered by a force balance, and the lift inferred from surface pressures. A low-speed wind tunnel holds the model fixed while air passes it at adjustable speed; a calibrated balance measures forces, while small flush holes on both surfaces connect by tubing to differential-pressure sensors referenced to . Iowa State's GA(W)-1 teaching model has taps around a chord; its instructions give their coordinates and close the contour by repeating the first tap. A classroom comparison can combine this pressure-panel method with a balance on the same model; this is an experiment design, not a claim that those instructions report a combined measurement. [ref]

Before turning on the wind, apply known positive and negative loads to the balance through its resolving centre; use for the known load from a mass. Record all balance channels during loading and unloading, including response to drag and torque loads, to detect cross coupling, hysteresis and zero drift. Record a wind-off tare at each model orientation so its weight does not become an aerodynamic lift reading. Map tunnel flow direction and uniformity, rather than using the fan setting as a speed measurement. Covert's MIT guide describes these calibration, tare and flow-survey requirements. [ref]
For each pressure channel, apply zero and several known pressure differences spanning the expected range; determine the voltage-to-pressure relation and recheck it after a run. Inspect tubing for leaks and blocked taps, and wait for readings to settle before averaging: tubing can delay a pressure signal. This calibration principle is used in NASA's electronically scanned pressure systems, where several applied calibration pressures determine each sensor's response and repeated calibration tracks drift. A simple pressure standard can instead use a liquid-column height difference and the hydrostatic pressure law. [ref]
Measure far-field static and total pressure outside the model's fluid wake; in low-speed incompressible flow their difference gives by the Bernoulli equation, so . Record temperature and ambient pressure to determine mass density using the ideal gas law. At fixed , step the angle of attack, repeat selected settings, and sweep back down to check reproducibility. Record balance lift, each tap's mean pressure, and fluctuation sizes. NASA describes pressure probes connected to differential transducers and emphasizes recording their reference pressure. [ref]

Convert each tap to a pressure coefficient . For consecutive taps bounding a panel of length with outward normal vector , a trapezoidal rule estimate of the pressure force per unit span isCompare this with balance lift divided by span only when the spanwise flow is approximately uniform. Agreement tests the pressure-resultant picture; disagreement calls for checking unresolved leading-edge pressure variations, skin shear stress, support loads and three-dimensional end effects before rejecting it. A force balance senses the total load, while taps alone reconstruct the pressure part. Tunnel walls and model blockage alter the effective flow and require corrections; end plates or a model extending between walls approximate two-dimensional flow but do not guarantee it. Record the Reynolds number and Mach number with the result, and do not interpret tunnel lift coefficients as universal wing data. [ref]

Magnetostrophic balance 2026-10-14
The leading force balance in a rapidly rotating conducting fluid when inertial and viscous forces are small, while Coriolis force, pressure, buoyancy and Lorentz force density remain significant. The Rossby number and Ekman number measure the omitted inertia and bulk viscosity. Rotation does not balance an arbitrary magnetic torque: impenetrable axisymmetric boundaries impose the Taylor constraint. Magnetic diffusion can remain in the induction equation even when viscosity is neglected in momentum balance.
Metacentric height 2026-10-18
For a small heel of a floating body in a uniform fluid, the metacentre is the intersection of the new vertical buoyancy line with the original vertical through the centre of buoyancy. With the centre of mass a signed distance above the original centre of buoyancy, the metacentric height is . Here is the waterplane second moment of area about the heel axis and the displaced volume. Positive gives a restoring small-angle torque and negative gives instability. The formula describes local static stability, not all large-angle behaviour or effects of free liquid surfaces inside the body.
Neutral buoyancy 2026-10-14
Neutral buoyancy means a fully immersed body's upward buoyancy equals its downward force from gravity. For a body of fixed volume in a constant-mass density fluid under a uniform gravitational field, this occurs when its mean mass density equals the surrounding mass density. A cube of mass density in the stipulated water has mass , so both forces are .
Ideally it can remain at rest at any depth for which it stays fully immersed and clear of boundaries. Raising or lowering it changes the absolute pressure, but neither its displaced volume nor the difference between the vertical pressure forces. There is therefore no vertical restoring force toward a preferred depth in this model. Neutral buoyancy is a vertical force balance, not a claim about resistance to tilting or about a compressible body whose volume changes with pressure.
For two-dimensional flow under the Boussinesq approximation with , , a linear mode whose Laplacian is proportional to its streamfunction has zero self-advection of vorticity. Its buoyancy anomaly is , with . Self-advection of buoyancy vanishes only when the displayed Jacobian is zero. Constant stratification and constant flow make constant and yield finite-amplitude exact wave solutions. A varying polarization coefficient generally creates a second harmonic, even when the vorticity self-interaction vanishes.
Oil drop experiment 2026-10-14
The oil drop experiment infers an oil drop's electric charge from its motion under gravity, buoyancy, drag and a calibrated electric field. Repeated changes of a single drop's electric charge reveal discrete steps; see the model, experimental procedure and limitations in elementary charge.
