Progressive illness-death model 2026-10-07
This continuous-time multi-state model permits progression , direct death , and death after progression , with no recovery and death an absorbing state. For constant positive rates , write . Integrating over the time of the progression arrow givesUse when . The other transition probabilities are , , , and . Unlike a purely sequential irreversible three-state disease model, the direct-death rate contributes to the first-state exit rate. A mixed panel and exact-death likelihood accounts for panel visits and exact death times with different kinds of factors.
Random adjacent transposition shuffle 2026-10-06
On the symmetric group , this Markov chain chooses uniformly from the identity and the adjacent transpositions, and multiplies on the right. Its stationary distribution is the uniform distribution on a finite set, because the generators are self-inverse. A fixed label's position is a lumped Markov chain on a path graph with off-diagonal transition probabilities to existing neighbours.
Simple random walk on the integer line Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
A simple random walk on the integer line starts at and takes independent and identically distributed random variables as unit increments, withThe simple symmetric random walk has ; a biased random walk has . At or every step is deterministic, giving or respectively.
Count the rightward steps using indicator functions:Thus the endpoint is a shifted and rescaled random variable with a binomial distribution. For a worked example, at the endpoint means exactly three rightward steps and one leftward step. There are possible orders, so its probability is , equal to in the fair case. More generally the binomial coefficient counts the orders, giving the exact probability mass functionIn particular, the endpoint must have the same integer parity as : . For the support of a probability distribution is exactly . At only even integers in are reachable; at only odd integers are reachable. This restriction is easy to lose if one draws a smooth curve instead of discrete probability masses. The fair-walk counting argument is also presented in Grinstead and Snell, Introduction to Probability, section 12.1.
Exact binomial endpoint probabilities for fair walks of 20 and 80 steps and a biased walk of 80 steps; only even endpoints are possible.
Details. The endpoint identity and the binomial distribution give the expected value, variance, and standard deviationA short direct check gives and , hence . Then apply linearity of expectation and the variance of a sum of independent random variables.
The absolute width and the width relative to the number of steps answer different questions. In the fair case the standard deviation grows from to , while shrinks from to . At , the standard deviation is , or times the fair width, and . Centering and dividing by each walk's own standard deviation gives, for ,This rescaling equalizes the variances, not the entire probability distributions. The spacing between reachable endpoints is two, so its rescaled spacing is : approximately for the fair -step walk, for the fair -step walk, and for the biased -step walk.
The positions themselves are dependent. For , , where the second term is independent of . Their covariance is thereforeFor example, in the fair case allows or , whereas allows or . Nevertheless the position process is a Markov chain: given its current position, the next fresh increment has no dependence on its past. Its transition probabilities areThese transition probabilities are the same at every time and every integer position: shifting both and by the same integer leaves unchanged. Thus the Markov property and independent increments coexist with dependent positions.
Simulated annealing Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
Simulated annealing accepts worse feasible solutions to escape a local minimum. Minimize an objective function , analogous to energy. Effective temperature has the same units as , absorbing the Boltzmann constant; it controls exploration, rather than a material's thermodynamic temperature.[ref]
Optimization by Simulated Annealing by Scott Kirkpatrick and others. Printed pp. 672–673: effective temperature and cost as energy
Given current feasible point , draw from a proposal distribution . For a symmetric proposal distribution, , use the Metropolis–Hastings acceptance probabilityAccept with this conditional probability; on rejection retain . Every downhill or equal-cost proposal is accepted. Draw a fresh uniform random variable on and accept if . The off-diagonal transition probability includes proposing .[ref]
Optimization by Simulated Annealing by Scott Kirkpatrick and others. Printed p. 672: acceptance rule and rejected proposals
For a maximization problem with objective function , set : every improving proposed neighbor is accepted, and a worsening move of loss has conditional probability of acceptance, under the same symmetry assumption. Likelihood-power annealing uses precisely this sign convention for a log-likelihood. Retain the best feasible solution seen, since the current state can worsen even after a global minimum has been visited.
If the proposal distribution is asymmetric, use the full Metropolis–Hastings acceptance probability, for ,A missing reverse proposal gives zero acceptance. Even a downhill proposal need not be accepted with probability one in this case. Choosing uniformly among a variable number of neighbors is generally asymmetric: and give the correction , where is vertex degree.[ref]
The useful idea is to separate exploring from insisting on improvement: an uphill move can open a route to a better feasible solution. Its usefulness depends on the proposal distribution, the scale of the objective function, and the cooling schedule for simulated annealing. Finite practical schedules carry no general guarantee of finding a global minimum.
Square-pulse resonance profile 2026-10-20
A constant-amplitude drive lasting gives the Fourier transform in the title, where and its value at zero is one. The transition probability in weak driving has a finite resonant maximum, first zeros at , and decreasing side lobes. Longer duration increases the peak as and narrows its width as . The rotating-wave approximation discards a rapidly oscillating counterrotating term; it can have a small absolute error but a large relative error at the resonant term's zeros.
Stochastic matrix 2026-10-14
A row-stochastic matrix has nonnegative entries and each row sums to one. For a time-homogeneous Discrete-time Markov chain, its transition matrix has entriesIf a state has zero probability at time , this row is specified by the model's Markov kernel, rather than recovered by conditioning on that zero-probability event. Rows index departure states and columns arrival states. Writing the current probability distribution as a row vector givesThe row-sum condition ensures that matrix multiplication preserves total probability. Under a column convention the evolution uses the transpose; the convention must accompany the formula.
For the sunny/rainy transition matrix, direct matrix multiplication givesIn particular, . The two terms sum the disjoint paths and . Requiring both subsequent days to be sunny has probability ; requiring only the second day to be sunny permits the extra path through rain.
Generally is the -step transition probability. The identity is the discrete-time Chapman-Kolmogorov equation: sum over the intermediate state. This makes matrix powers useful for forecasting many steps without enumerating every path individually.
Transition density 2026-10-25
A probability density function for the conditional future state of a Markov process given its current state. Integrating over a measurable region gives its transition probability. A transition kernel need not admit a density; discrete or partly atomic transition laws require a different reference measure or a separate atomic part.
Unitary time evolution Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-18
For a closed quantum system, unitary time evolution changes a quantum state through a unitary operator, preserving norms and inner products. For a time-independent self-adjoint Hamiltonian operator , choose the initial time as zero:Here is the reduced Planck constant. The same acts on every initial quantum state; it depends on the Hamiltonian operator and elapsed time, rather than the chosen preparation.[ref]
The self-adjointness of makes the exponential a unitary operator. In finite dimension, conjugating its matrix exponential givesThe two exponents commute because both are multiples of . Hence, for any two initial vectors,This short proof explains why normalization survives, why orthogonality of initial vectors survives, and why the transition probability between two states evolved by the same is unchanged. It does not require that a fixed measurement in quantum mechanics have time-independent probabilities: its measurement basis need not move with the quantum states.
For an unbounded self-adjoint operator, define the exponential through the spectral theorem, rather than assuming that its power series acts on every vector. It is a unitary operator on the entire Hilbert space; the strong Schrödinger equation holds for initial vectors in the operator domain . For a density operator, unitary time evolution reads . It preserves eigenvalues and purity of a density operator, but can change its entries in a fixed basis.
The useful distinction is between conserving total probability and conserving each measurement's probabilities. A fixed energy spectrum supplies different ticking rates for different probability amplitudes. Their relative quantum phases can move the Bloch vector and create quantum interference even while every energy eigenstate population stays fixed. Qubit precession under a constant Hamiltonian makes this visible; Ramsey interferometry converts the accumulated relative quantum phase into a population difference that a simple readout can detect.
Weakly symmetric channel capacity Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-25
For a discrete memoryless channel with output symbols, suppose every row of the transition matrix is a permutation of every other row and all column sums agree. Such a communication channel hasThe row Shannon entropy is the same for every input, so has that fixed value for every input probability distribution. The remaining term is at most by maximum entropy on a finite alphabet.
A uniform input attains the bound. If there are input symbols, the total of all transition probabilities in the matrix is ; equal column sums must therefore each be . Multiplication by the uniform input mass gives output mass in each column. Hence , which proves the displayed formula. The cyclic ternary channel capacity, binary symmetric channel capacity, and ternary symmetric channel capacity are concrete applications of this symmetry calculation.
Weak-pulse Ramsey spectrum 2026-10-25
For two coherent square pulses of equal duration , pulse-start separation , resonant Rabi angular frequency , and Rabi detuning , the initially lower-state transition probability has the displayed leading weak-excitation form when . Integrating the first-order probability amplitude over both windows gives a sum of two equal Fourier transforms, with relative quantum phase . The factor four from coherent addition makes the central value . The rotating-wave approximation additionally requires many carrier cycles per pulse and near-resonant weak driving.
