A two-dimensional forward two-dimensional enstrophy cascade has the idealized spectrum . The energy integral above a wavenumber scales as its inverse square, whereas the cumulative enstrophy integral grows logarithmically. The spectrum used here omits possible further logarithmic corrections.
Eddy turnover time 2026-10-14
The eddy turnover time estimates how long a velocity difference takes to distort a structure of size . In a local strong energy cascade, the transfer time is assumed comparable to it. A weak wave cascade can transfer energy much more slowly because a single encounter makes only a small fractional change.
Zeroth law of turbulence 2026-10-14
At fixed outer velocity and integral scale of turbulence, the mean viscous dissipation per unit mass approaches a positive finite value as the Reynolds number becomes large. The dimensionless coefficient is then of order one. This is a phenomenological property of established three-dimensional turbulence, not a consequence of taking kinematic viscosity to zero in an arbitrary smooth flow.
Spectral triad interaction Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
The quadratic nonlinear term of the Navier-Stokes equation couples three Fourier modes whose wave vectors close to a triangle. These spectral triad interactions transfer kinetic energy between wave numbers. A turbulence closure can model their triple correlations while retaining more scale information than a prescribed local power law.
For , , let . On an outer periodic orbit with , leading energy balance method requires , where
Here . The homoclinic orbit limit is . Differentiating the denominator gives a period integral diverging at , whereas the derivative of the numerator stays finite; hence decreases immediately above zero. At large , rescaling gives . Its first nondegenerate minimum selects a saddle-node bifurcation of periodic orbits; numerical quadrature gives . The cycle on the decreasing portion is unstable and the one on the increasing portion is stable, since the net energy drift has sign . Restoring an unperturbed coefficient in the linear restoring term multiplies the threshold by .
If has a simple interior zero and , the inner variable turns the local integral into . Thus a peak with vanishing width can retain finite area. Slowly varying positive regularization factors cancel between peak height and width when the numerator has the matching factor. An ordinary outer expansion can miss this contribution even though the peak is exponentially narrow.
Functional plastid-to-nucleus gene transfer experiment Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
Experimental Reconstruction of Functional Gene Transfer from the Tobacco Plastid Genome to the Nucleus by Sandra Stegemann and Ralph Bock (2006, Results, pp. 2870–2874) separated relocation of DNA from activation of a relocated gene. Engineered tobacco chloroplasts carried an nptII gene with nuclear expression signals beside an aadA gene with plastid expression signals. Selection on kanamycin recovered plants with the segment in the nuclear genome. Crosses then replaced the engineered chloroplasts with ordinary chloroplasts: the nuclear segment remained, but the plants were initially sensitive to spectinomycin and streptomycin. The transferred aadA gene was not yet functional in its new setting.
Leaf pieces were cultured on regeneration medium containing both drugs. Resistant regenerated plants supplied the functional readout. Using both drugs reduced selection of spontaneous plastid mutations conferring resistance mainly to one drug. Reciprocal crosses and selfing distinguished maternal plastid inheritance from nuclear Mendelian segregation; eight of sixteen initial candidates had the latter pattern. [ref]
The molecular readout came from RNA hybridization and DNA sequencing. A Northern blot detected aadA messenger RNA in activated lines, with different transcript sizes. Thermal asymmetric interlaced polymerase chain reaction recovered upstream DNA; products present in activated lines but absent in original-line and ordinary-plant controls were sequenced. The mapped rearrangements connected aadA to the upstream nuclear gene promoter. Thus resistance, inheritance, RNA detection and changed nucleotide sequences supported activation of the transferred nuclear gene, rather than resistance alone. [ref]

Separate evidence for ancestry, DNA transfer and functional activation
. Original evidence map and simplified experimental logic. Boxes summarize questions, readouts and controls; no measured phylogenetic tree, nucleotide sequence, deletion map or quantitative response is copied. Organelle protein import remains a separate question beyond this tobacco experiment. Details.
This engineered test demonstrates one route to functional nuclear gene expression after plastid DNA transfer. It does not establish a natural transfer rate, replay ancient endosymbiosis or demonstrate that the resulting protein is imported into a chloroplast. The authors explicitly identify acquisition of targeting information as an additional step not reproduced by this experiment. [ref]
Let be a singular endomorphism of a finite-dimensional vector space. Choose and a nonzero linear functional vanishing on , possible because that image of a linear map is proper. Then is a nonzero rank-one endomorphism with .
Linear endomorphism Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
A linear endomorphism is a linear map from a vector space to itself. In a finite-dimensional basis it is represented by a square matrix. It need not be invertible; an invertible linear endomorphism is an automorphism of the vector space.
Every endomorphism of the additive finite cyclic group , for a positive integer , has the form , determined by . This is the self-map case of homomorphism from a finite cyclic group: repeated addition forces the value at every element. Conversely, each choice of respects addition and gives a well-defined map on congruence classes.
Let , the greatest common divisor. The image of a group homomorphism is the cyclic subgroup generated by , with size by order of an element of a finite cyclic group. The kernel of a group homomorphism is
Indeed, is equivalent to dividing , after cancelling and using coprimality. Consequently is a group automorphism exactly when and are coprime. In that case a modular inverse of gives . This connects reversible self-maps directly to the generators of a finite cyclic group.[ref]
Core and power-law elliptical galaxies Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
Bright elliptical galaxies commonly have a shallow central surface-brightness cusp inside a break radius, whereas many less luminous elliptical galaxies have a steep cusp continuing inward. The latter can have many more luminous tracers at a fixed small radius, helping central black hole dynamical measurements. This empirical distinction is not a universal classification by mass alone. Measurements of central galaxy profiles quantify the contrast.
Faber-Jackson relation 2026-10-14
The Faber-Jackson relation is an empirical correlation between luminosity and stellar velocity dispersion for elliptical galaxies, approximately in its classical form. Slope, scatter, sample and band matter. A heuristic combines , common mass-to-light ratio, and common characteristic surface brightness . The luminosity-dispersion correlation alone does not imply those auxiliary assumptions, and extrapolation to a dwarf spheroidal galaxy is not guaranteed.
Fundamental plane (elliptical galaxies) Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
The fundamental plane relates effective radius, stellar velocity dispersion, and mean surface brightness of elliptical galaxies. Homologous virial equilibrium with constant mass-to-light ratio predicts ; empirical exponents differ. The two-variable Faber-Jackson relation is a projection, not the entire plane.
Euler system of elliptic units Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
Elliptic-unit distribution gives norm-compatible units indexed by auxiliary squarefree ray moduli, with norm factor at a newly added prime. Kolyvagin derivative operators turn these units into classes with controlled valuations, and suitable auxiliary primes chosen using Chebotarev density theorem bound class-group characteristic ideals. The construction supplies the difficult divisibility in the CM Iwasawa main conjecture.
Weierstrass functions 2026-10-14
Associated with a period lattice are the Weierstrass sigma, zeta, eta and elliptic functions. They satisfy and ; the eta constants record quasi-period increments of the Weierstrass zeta function.
Jacobi elliptic functions 2026-10-14
The Jacobi elliptic functions include , and , with and . Their ratios give the other standard members. The Jacobi elliptic sine is the inverse of the elliptic integral of the first kind.
Hopf lemma 2026-10-14
For with bounded coefficients and uniform ellipticity near a boundary point satisfying the interior sphere condition, suppose has and in a tangent open ball. With the outward unit normal of that ball, . Consequently the outward normal derivative is positive whenever it exists. The given boundary continuity alone does not assert that the derivative exists. The minimum version follows by applying this to ; operators with a zeroth-order term require additional sign hypotheses.
For , the standard ellipsoid covering a centrally cut half of the unit ball has center and shape matrix . Its eigenvalues are along and in the other directions. Hence its volume ratio is . Using and gives . Affine changes of coordinates preserve the volume ratio. The resulting geometric convergence underlies the ellipsoid method; exact rational feasibility additionally needs input-dependent size, precision and lower-dimensional feasibility bounds.
A polynomial-time algorithm for integer linear feasibility gives exact rational linear programming optimization. Rational vertex bounds give a polynomial-bit bound on every finite optimal value and its denominator. An objective threshold below that bound detects unboundedness after feasibility is established. Binary search with the additional inequality localizes the finite optimum to an interval containing a unique rational of bounded denominator; continued fractions recover it exactly. A feasible optimizer can then be found by successive coordinate minimizations on a bounded optimal face. These produce faces of one fixed rational polytope, so one uniform vertex-denominator bound works throughout, avoiding exponential growth of precision requirements.
For an integer linear polyhedron with coefficients bounded by , put and . If , every with satisfies . Thus contains a positive-radius Euclidean ball and is a full-dimensional linear polyhedron. If is empty, the normalized integer Farkas infeasibility gap gives , , and . A point of would give , a contradiction. Consequently this relaxation preserves emptiness and supplies the inner-volume bound needed by the ellipsoid method, even when has empty interior.
