A deformation map sends each particle's reference configuration position to its current configuration position. Its spatial derivative with respect to the Lagrangian coordinates is the deformation gradient.

These stress measures refer force or area to the reference configuration. Different index-order conventions distinguish a first Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor from its transposed nominal stress tensor. The second Piola-Kirchhoff stress tensor has two material indices.

The right Cauchy-Green tensor measures stretch on the reference configuration. Its eigenvalues are the same squared principal stretches as those of the left Cauchy-Green deformation tensor, but its eigenvectors are reference directions.
