A Standard Model charged-current box diagram converts into . Internal quarks run over , and the flavor sum contains with . The loop function depends on internal masses; CKM matrix unitarity gives , producing the GIM mechanism cancellation of flavor-independent terms. The amplitude is of order and second order in the weak interaction.
CP symmetry Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-07
The combined operation of charge conjugation and parity symmetry in quantum field theory. A weak interaction can preserve this symmetry while violating each constituent separately.
Electroweak interaction Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-18
The electroweak interaction is the gauge theory that unifies the weak and electromagnetic interactions.
An instructive tension motivates the unification: the photon is massless, while the W boson and Z boson are massive; electromagnetic interaction and weak interaction also have different observed low-energy strengths and chiral couplings. A gauge theory can relate their interactions while the Higgs field gives different masses after electroweak symmetry breaking. The resulting theory predicts relationships between processes, not merely a common name for observed phenomena.
Its useful organizing principle is the combination of weak isospin and hypercharge. The surviving electromagnetic generator is in the convention used here. The photon and Z boson are different mixtures of neutral gauge fields, while the charged current uses the charged combinations. The electroweak doublet gauge-boson mass matrix explains why one neutral mixture stays massless. At low energies, a massive W boson propagator instead produces the approximate Fermi interaction, with
Here is the gauge coupling and the Higgs doublet vacuum expectation value. The inverse squared mediator mass suppresses low-energy weak rates. Unification does not require setting equal to the electromagnetic coupling : their relation is .
A striking experimental consequence is a neutral current in addition to the familiar charged current. The Gargamelle experiment tests this extra channel through visible charged secondaries, with a background problem fundamentally different from directly identifying a Z boson. The muon-neutrino electron recoil spectrum shows how the same Weinberg angle enters another process quantitatively.
Flavor eigenstate Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
A flavor eigenstate is a state with a definite flavor label in the specified interaction or flavor-charge basis. For neutral kaons, and have definite opposite strangeness. Weak interactions mix them, so these flavor states are not the mass eigenstates. The precise flavor basis must be specified when discussing mixing.
Hadronic form factor 2026-10-18
A hadronic form factor parametrizes a current matrix element between hadron states, separating allowed Lorentz covariant tensor structures from scalar-valued functions of Lorentz invariant combinations of momentum transfer. These functions encode composite structure and strong interaction dynamics. Equal kinematic phase space does not imply equal form factors for different weak interaction transitions.
Inverse beta decay 2026-10-18
In the reaction displayed here, an electron antineutrino interacts with a proton to produce a Positron and a neutron. It turns an otherwise hard-to-observe incident particle into two products with different detection signatures. A prompt Positron signal followed by neutron capture can identify a candidate much more selectively than a single energy deposit. Inverse beta decay is a weak interaction; the incident electron antineutrino is detected through its reaction products.
In 1956, Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang examined the evidence for parity conservation in the weak interaction. Their paper, Question of Parity Conservation in Weak Interactions, distinguished an untested assumption from an established experimental result and proposed comparing Electron emission along opposite directions relative to oriented nuclear spins, explicitly considering cobalt-60. It proposed a test; it did not report the later Wu experiment.[ref]
The conceptual improvement is the choice of observable. An angle between two polar vectors is preserved by spatial reflection; its distribution can conceal parity violation. An angle between an axial vector and a polar vector changes to its supplement. Thus a spin-resolved directional measurement asks a different question from an unpolarized total decay rate.
Neutral current Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
The weak neutral current couples the Z boson to a fermion without changing its electric charge. Its vector and axial-vector coefficients depend on weak isospin, electric charge, and the weak mixing angle.
The neutral current transfers no electric charge at a fermion vertex; “neutral” does not mean that every participating particle is uncharged. For example, transfers energy and momentum to an Electron through Z boson exchange. By contrast, a charged current can convert a muon neutrino into a muon, as in . Both processes conserve total electric charge. A photon also carries no electric charge, but an active neutrino has no electromagnetic charge coupling: its neutral current is a distinct weak interaction.
The experimentally useful contrast on a nucleon target is
where is a nucleon and is an allowed final state of hadrons. The charged current makes a charged lepton available for identification; the outgoing neutrino in a neutral current leaves no bubble-chamber track. A sample of hadronic events without an identified muon therefore poses an experimental question: how many could instead be neutron interactions, or charged current events whose muon was missed? The answer requires a detector-response and background analysis, not merely an inspection for an absent line.
After cosmological weak freeze-out, the surviving neutron fraction is , where is the initial neutron-to-proton ratio and is the mean lifetime. Baryon number is conserved because a decaying neutron becomes a proton. If almost all surviving neutrons enter helium-4, neutron-limited helium synthesis gives the displayed primordial helium mass fraction. Increasing the half-life increases survival. If the longer lifetime also represents uniformly weaker weak interactions, it raises the temperature of cosmological weak freeze-out and the initial neutron fraction, reinforcing the helium increase. That last conclusion requires specifying how the weak rates change, rather than treating lifetime alone as a complete microscopic model.
Awarded in equal shares to Carlo Rubbia and Simon van der Meer for decisive contributions to the project that discovered the and particles mediating the weak interaction.[ref]
Nonleptonic baryon decay 2026-10-18
A weak interaction decay of a baryon into final hadrons without final leptons. A weak charged current changes quark flavour, while spectator quarks and the produced quarks undergo hadronization. A quark-flow Feynman diagram specifies a possible weak topology; it does not calculate the full hadronic decay amplitude.
At neutrino decoupling, the interaction rate is comparable with the Hubble parameter. Equating the supplied rates gives
Here the Planck mass is the unreduced in natural units, , and the effective number of relativistic energy degrees of freedom is . The supplied rate gives an order-of-magnitude neutrino decoupling estimate; a precise neutron-proton conversion temperature uses its own weak-rate coefficients.
The chemical equilibrium condition for is . With negligible lepton chemical potentials, . The nonrelativistic Maxwell--Boltzmann number density therefore gives
because and the small mass difference can be neglected in the prefactor. This is the neutron-proton chemical equilibrium relation.
For the deuterium equilibrium abundance, because photons have zero chemical potential. The sign convention in the paper is important: , while the positive nuclear binding energy is . Using spin multiplicities , gives
With , , and photon number density , this becomes
Here is a number fraction; the fraction of baryons bound in deuterium is . The formula estimates the onset of the deuterium bottleneck opening while depletion of free neutrons and protons remains small. Because , stable deuterium becomes abundant only far below the positive nuclear binding energy, not simply at .
Let denote cosmological weak freeze-out of the neutron-to-proton ratio, , and let mark efficient nuclear burning. Free-neutron decay after freeze-out gives
Almost every surviving neutron enters helium-4, whose atomic nucleus contains two neutrons and four baryons. Thus neutron-limited helium synthesis gives
A longer neutron half-life leaves more neutrons available, increasing the primordial helium mass fraction. If the longer lifetime reflects weaker weak interactions, the accompanying earlier cosmological weak freeze-out can reinforce that effect.
During radiation domination, whereas the weak conversion rate is proportional to . Hence . Increasing the effective number of relativistic energy degrees of freedom raises , increasing , and shortens the interval for free-neutron decay after freeze-out. Both increase the primordial helium mass fraction while nuclear burning remains efficient. The same reasoning gives the primordial helium response to a varying gravitational constant: larger over this interval produces more helium, with fixed microscopic rates and the approximate Friedmann equation unchanged. Smaller has the opposite effect. A particular varying- model must specify its background expansion and time history; the simple trend must not be extrapolated to changes so large that nuclear burning itself fails.
Use natural units and the unreduced Planck mass . Neutrino decoupling occurs when the weak interaction rate falls below the Hubble parameter. The weak-decoupling temperature estimate equates the given rate with the radiation-era expansion rate:
Here counts the effective number of relativistic energy degrees of freedom, and the Fermi constant is . The omitted reaction-rate coefficients make this an order-of-magnitude estimate: decoupling occurs at a temperature of order one MeV.
The charge-conserving channel is , together with . The positron sign in the printed neutron-capture channel violates electric charge conservation. Chemical equilibrium requires . Negligible lepton chemical potentials therefore give . Since neutrons and protons are nonrelativistic particles, their Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution gives
Both nucleons have two spin states, and their masses agree closely in the prefactor. Thus neutron-proton chemical equilibrium implies
The heavier neutron is suppressed by a Boltzmann factor.
For the deuterium equilibrium abundance, retain the paper's convention ; the positive nuclear binding energy is . Chemical equilibrium of gives because the equilibrium photon chemical potential vanishes. Using the nonrelativistic Maxwell--Boltzmann number density for each species and dividing gives
Here and . With the baryon-to-photon ratio , the photon number density , and , , this becomes
In this convention counts nuclei, so its contribution to the fraction of baryons in deuterium is .
The deuterium bottleneck explains why helium-4 formation waits until is far below . At higher temperature, there are vastly more photons than baryons; even the dilute energetic tail can destroy newly formed deuterium. A crude estimate balances against one, giving for of order . The power-law factors in the deuterium equilibrium abundance and the nuclear reaction rates refine this estimate. Once stable deuterium accumulates, further reactions can efficiently place nearly all surviving neutrons into helium-4.
Write at the onset of nuclear burning. Each helium-4 nucleus requires two neutrons and contains four baryons. Neutron-limited helium synthesis therefore gives the primordial helium mass fraction
For a realistic rough cosmological weak freeze-out estimate, is about and free-neutron decay after freeze-out reduces it to about , giving roughly one quarter of the baryonic mass in helium-4. The survival relation that conserves baryon number is ; the corresponding is .
The rough neutrino decoupling rate by itself does not determine that one-quarter value. Substituting literally into would give and before neutron decay. Neutron-proton chemical equilibrium persists to a lower temperature, approximately -- once the actual conversion rates are included. The rate scaling fixes the MeV scale; accurate abundances need the conversion coefficients and the delay through the deuterium bottleneck. This sequence is described in David Tong's discussion of nucleosynthesis.
Increasing reduces the equilibrium neutron-to-proton ratio, so the primordial helium abundance decreases. Holding the freeze-out temperature and the decay survival factor fixed, the primordial helium response to the neutron-proton mass difference is
For and -- this is about --, a reduction of roughly fifteen percent. A larger also changes neutron decay and detailed weak rates; their quantitative effects require more microscopic information. The sign from the Boltzmann factor is already clear.
Use natural units, assume negligible neutrino chemical potentials, and approximate neutrino decoupling as occurring before electron-positron annihilation in cosmology. At high temperature, weak interactions maintain a common temperature for neutrinos, antineutrinos, Electrons, Positrons and photons. Since , the reaction rate eventually loses against expansion. Decoupled relativistic neutrinos then free stream; their momenta redshift as , so their distribution retains a temperature parameter satisfying .
The still-coupled electromagnetic bath receives the entropy of annihilating Electrons and Positrons. Its effective number of relativistic entropy degrees of freedom is initially
where the two photon polarizations count as bosonic states and the four electron-positron spin states have the fermion entropy weight . After the pairs disappear, . Cosmological entropy conservation in this coupled bath gives . The three already decoupled neutrino species are excluded from this bath's entropy count. At decoupling , hence
Subsequent expansion preserves this ratio in the idealized history. Residual interactions during annihilation give small corrections to the instantaneous-decoupling approximation. If a relic species later becomes massive, here remains the redshifting momentum-distribution parameter; it need not be its nonrelativistic kinetic temperature.
A single ordinary neutrino species includes one populated neutrino helicity and one antineutrino helicity. For negligible chemical potential, integration of the Fermi-Dirac distribution gives
Therefore the number density of a relativistic neutrino relative to photons, with the antiparticle included, is
The factor is the fermionic number-density weight, distinct from the energy and entropy weight . This relation continues to hold after this species becomes nonrelativistic if its comoving particle number is conserved.
Under the proposed matter-dominated, spatially flat model, the Friedmann equation requires the present relic-neutrino energy density to be approximately the critical density. Using the unreduced Planck mass gives
Thus the critical-density mass of a thermal relic neutrino is
Taking the paper's rounded values, , and , gives
For , this is of order -- with these approximate constants. More precise constants change the coefficient, not the requested mass scale. This mass is much larger than the present momentum scale , validating the nonrelativistic energy density approximation. The result assumes that one thermal relic species dominates the matter density; it is conditional on that model rather than a measurement of a neutrino mass.
If the weak-rate coefficient is reduced, equality with the expansion rate occurs at a higher temperature, since scales as that coefficient times . The freeze-out temperature and interaction strength relation is . The frozen neutron-to-proton ratio is then closer to one, so the primordial helium mass fraction increases, potentially approaching unity if nearly equal numbers survive to nucleosynthesis. If the same weaker interaction also slows free-neutron decay, it reinforces this trend; changing conversion rates alone would instead require a separate treatment of the decay interval.
Less primordial hydrogen means less hydrogen fuel and, for otherwise comparable stellar physics, helium enrichment raises the mean molecular weight, tending to make a fixed-mass star hotter and more luminous and to shorten its hydrogen-burning lifetime. A genuinely weaker weak interaction also changes proton-proton fusion itself, so a quantitative lifetime cannot be inferred from composition alone. Much less hydrogen and fewer long-lived suitable stars would alter planet formation, water availability and the timescales needed for life on Earth. These are physical implications of the changed initial composition, not a numerical prediction of habitability from the helium fraction alone.
Adopt the phase convention and . Changing both phases changes the convention for the mixing parameter, not physical predictions. The flavor contents are and . A pair of charged weak currents changes strangeness by two units through the following box contractions, with summed over.
Figure 1.
Charged-current box contractions for neutral-kaon mixing; solid arrows carry quark number and wavy lines denote W bosons
. Details.
The drawing uses unitary gauge: the W boson gauge-boson propagator contains its longitudinal part. In a gauge of a renormalizable quantum field theory, charged Goldstone boson boxes must also be included to obtain the same gauge-independent result. The external lines represent the valence quarks; the meson matrix element also contains strong interaction binding effects.
Put , and . The charged weak box contribution to kaon mixing has the effective four-fermion interaction structure
Here is the Fermi constant, is the CKM matrix, and is a dimensionless loop function from a Feynman integral; the estimate suppresses convention-dependent numerical factors. Four weak interaction Feynman vertices and a one-loop Feynman integral give the coupling and loop order suppression. Unitarity of the CKM matrix gives , so the GIM mechanism cancels the mass-independent part. With a negligible up quark mass, the leading charm quark term has . Define by . Estimating the hadronic matrix element by , with the dimensionless kaon bag parameter of order unity, gives
The hadronic normalization includes division by when relativistically normalized states are converted to the effective Hamiltonian for neutral-meson mixing. Since , the Cabibbo suppression is explicit. Illustrative scales , , and give an order to estimate. The full sum includes charm quark-top quark and top quark-top quark terms, important for CP violation; long-distance strong interaction contributions prevent this dimensional estimate from being a precision prediction. A meson matrix element necessarily needs hadronic input in addition to electroweak parameters.
For the decaying kaon system write , where and are Hermitian matrices. The entries denoted in the question are entries of this effective Hamiltonian for neutral-meson mixing; they need not themselves form a Hermitian matrix. CPT invariance equates the diagonal masses and diagonal decay widths, giving
One can see why there is no complex conjugation on the right as follows. In the flavor subspace let and represent the antiunitary CPT operation by followed by complex conjugation. CPT changes a projected forward propagator into its adjoint. Indeed, if projects onto the flavor subspace and is the Hermitian microscopic generator, its invariance and the antiunitary reversal of give . In the time-independent two-state approximation, the effective generator this means , whose diagonal entries give ; the off-diagonal entries impose no further condition. Equivalently, apply CPT separately to the dispersive and absorptive Hermitian matrices. Treating the decaying effective Hamiltonian for neutral-meson mixing as a Hermitian matrix would incorrectly discard the absorptive part.
In the chosen flavor phase convention CP is represented by . Its invariance requires . Thus it gives diagonal equality and additionally
The normalized CP eigenstates are
Applying CP directly gives eigenvalues and respectively.
Now use CPT to put and take correlated square roots , . Its characteristic polynomial equation is , and direct multiplication shows
Expressing these two eigenvectors in the CP eigenstate basis gives, respectively, coefficients proportional to and . Therefore the kaon CP mixing parameter is
and, because the CP eigenstate basis is orthonormal, the normalized states at production are
The kaon mixing square-root branch convention correlates the roots continuously with the limit of conserved CP , where and . Reversing one root interchanges the two eigenstates. The labels short and long are fixed by their decay widths: their complex eigenvalues are , and subsequent evolution supplies . The displayed formula assumes nonzero mixing and , as in the physical kaon system; degenerate or defective matrices require a separate limiting treatment.
Quark mixing arises because the up-type and down-type quark Yukawa matrices need not be diagonal in the same weak interaction basis. In the Standard Model the three left-handed quark doublets transform as under , whereas and transform as and . With a Higgs doublet and its conjugate , the gauge-invariant Yukawa interaction is
The generation indices are matrix-multiplied. Electroweak symmetry breaking, , produces and .
Each complex fermion mass matrix admits a biunitary diagonalization,
where the diagonal entries are real nonnegative quark masses. Define and , and similarly for right-handed fields. The kinetic terms retain their canonical form because the transformations are unitary matrices. However, the weak charged current becomes
This unitary matrix is the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. Its entries multiply transitions between up-type and down-type mass eigenstates. The minimal Standard Model has no analogous right-handed charged weak current.
Quark mixing does not introduce tree-level flavor-changing neutral currents. Photon, gluon and weak neutral current couplings are proportional to the identity within each fixed-charge quark sector, and . The single Higgs doublet also has diagonal neutral scalar field couplings after the same transformations that diagonalize the masses. At higher loop orders, flavor changes are possible. For example, an amplitude contains . Unitarity of the CKM matrix sets the sum of coefficients to zero, cancelling any mass-independent part. This is the GIM mechanism; mass splittings leave a suppressed, generally nonzero amplitude.
For generations a unitary matrix has real parameters: mixing angles and phases. Rephasing the up-type and down-type quark fields removes phases; a common baryon number phase leaves every matrix entry unchanged. Hence the physical numbers are
Two generations therefore give a real Cabibbo rotation,
with strangeness-changing charged-current transitions suppressed by . Three generations have three mixing angles and one irreducible weak CP phase. This counting assumes nondegenerate masses; degeneracies allow additional basis rotations.
Writing and , a standard exact parametrization is
Complex entries alone do not establish CP violation, because quark quantum field rephasings can change their phases. For nondegenerate quark masses the weak mixing sector conserves CP precisely when a basis makes real. A useful invariant test is the Jarlskog invariant,
A nonzero requires all three mixing angles and a nontrivial phase. If two same-charge quark masses coincide, the additional basis freedom removes the corresponding physical CP effect. The possible QCD theta angle is a separate CP parameter, not part of this weak-mixing count.
The Wolfenstein parametrization displays the hierarchy of quark mixing economically. Put , , and . Expanding the exact matrix gives
The observed pattern is predominantly diagonal, with - mixing largest and -, - mixing successively suppressed. The expansion implies . The truncated matrix must not be treated as an exactly unitary matrix.
Column orthogonality gives
The three complex numbers form a CKM unitarity triangle, with area . Dividing by puts its vertices at , and , where . The barred parameters include higher-order corrections to the Wolfenstein parameters. Comparing independent measurements of its sides and angles tests both quark mixing and the absence of additional flavor dynamics.
Semileptonic decay rates determine magnitudes of CKM entries through factors once hadronic matrix elements are controlled. Neutral kaon and neutral B-meson mixing constrain products of entries through weak box scattering amplitudes. CP asymmetries probe their invariant relative phases, with kaon mixing providing indirect CP violation and decay amplitudes providing direct CP violation. These processes complement tests of the unitarity constraints on rows and columns. The minimal three-generation Standard Model describes weak quark mixing by a unitary matrix with three angles and one physical CP phase; it does not predict the Yukawa couplings or their hierarchy.
During radiation domination, the effective number of relativistic energy degrees of freedom, denoted , gives the energy density
The paper's is this ; it is not the conventionally normalized effective number of neutrino species. With the specified reduced Planck mass, the Friedmann equation reads , whence
Write the weak interaction conversion rate as . The ratio scales as , so it falls during cooling: conversion eventually becomes too slow to maintain neutron-proton chemical equilibrium. Equating the conversion and expansion rates gives
On suppressing the numerical coefficient, the cosmological weak freeze-out temperature is consequently
The one-sixth power reflects a balance between a conversion rate proportional to and a Hubble parameter proportional to .
A longer neutron half-life means a larger mean lifetime . Holding the initial neutron-to-proton ratio and the nuclear-burning delay fixed, the derivative of the neutron survival factor is positive:
Thus fewer neutrons disappear during the deuterium bottleneck, and the final helium-4 mass fraction increases.
There can be a second effect if the increased lifetime represents a uniform reduction of the relevant weak interaction strength. With fixed masses and other couplings, neutron decay and the conversion reactions both scale as . Thus , whereas . Weaker conversion then freezes out earlier and increases , reinforcing the survival effect. The survival argument alone already establishes the requested neutron half-life effect on primordial helium; linking lifetime to all conversion rates additionally requires this microscopic assumption.
