For massless , define by the Feynman-rule product with quark vertex . The ordered quark exchanges contribute after double contraction. Three-gluon exchange contributes , so the sum vanishes by the Lie algebra. This does not assert off-shell transversality of each open index; the full Slavnov-Taylor identity includes Faddeev-Popov ghost terms.
Electroweak unification history Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
Sheldon Lee Glashow's 1979 lecture, Towards a Unified Theory: Threads in a Tapestry, recalls his 1961 construction: a photon, a massive neutral intermediary and a mixing angle. It also stresses its unresolved mass problem: symmetry-breaking masses had been inserted, rather than generated by the Higgs mechanism. Establishing the gauge structure and explaining the gauge boson masses were complementary steps.[ref]

Steven Weinberg's A Model of Leptons (1967) builds a spontaneously broken gauge theory for the electron-type leptons, using a scalar doublet to give masses while retaining a massless photon. It derives neutral and charged couplings and discusses neutrino-electron scattering. Its closing question about renormalizability is explicitly unresolved; the paper is neither a proof of that property nor a complete treatment of quarks.[ref]

Abdus Salam's 1979 lecture, Gauge Unification of Fundamental Forces, describes his and Steven Weinberg's completion of the spontaneously broken formulation for leptons. He separates that construction from the subsequent establishment of renormalizability. Its role is to connect the mass mechanism with predictive neutral and charged couplings, not to identify a photographed event. The Gargamelle evidence subsequently tested the predicted neutral current.[ref]

Elementary charge Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
The elementary charge is the positive magnitude of the electron's electric charge, not the signed electric charge of the electron itself:Since the 2019 revision of the SI, this numerical value defines the ampere together with the definition of the second; . Thus today's numerical exactness is a choice of units, whereas measured electric charges still have experimental uncertainty. An oil drop experiment can test charge quantization and the apparatus calibration; it does not supply a new uncertain defining value of in today's SI. [ref]

.For ordinary isolated chemical atoms, ions and charged objects whose net electric charge is counted through protons and electrons, charge quantization gives with signed integer . A neutral chemical atom that loses two electrons becomes an ion of electric charge . A toy object with excess electrons has . Conversely, the scale explains why laboratory electric charge often looks continuous: billions of microscopic increments fit into a small macroscopic amount. Averaged charge density is a continuum description, not a claim that each particle has an arbitrarily divisible electric charge.
The ordinary-matter qualifier matters. In the Standard Model, quarks have electric charges or , and antiquarks have the opposite signs. Confinement means these are constituents of hadrons, not isolated fractionally charged particles collected by an oil drop experiment. The usual valence quark sums give for a proton and for a neutron. Thus elementary charge should not be defined as the smallest nonzero electric charge of every constituent in particle theory. [ref]

.The beautiful experimental idea behind the oil drop experiment is to determine a microscopic electric charge by watching a visible carrier move. In his 1913 paper, Millikan timed the descent and electrically driven ascent of individual oil drops, repeatedly changing a drop's electric charge through capture of air ions. His apparatus used parallel plates separated by , a roughly source, and an optical scale to measure travel distances. He reported multiple relationships among a given drop's inferred electric charges. He also found that uncorrected Stokes's law gave a size-dependent inferred elementary unit, and introduced a pressure-dependent slip correction. These were measured relationships with calibration and model uncertainties, not exact readings of today's defined . [ref]

.A modern instructional implementation sprays low-volatility oil of known density through a plate aperture, illuminates the drops, and follows one through a calibrated optical scale. Measure the plate spacing , electric potential difference , air temperature and pressure. Time a fixed distance with the electric field off to get a terminal falling speed . Then choose the field polarity to drive the same drop upward and measure . Repeat timings at a fixed electric charge, and compare before and after an ion-capture event. The same drop is especially useful because its radius and mass need not be inferred anew for each charge state. [ref]

.Here is the leading continuum model, retaining buoyancy. Assume a drop shaped as a sphere of radius , oil and air densities and , air dynamic viscosity , and gravitational acceleration . Define the downward effective weight and positive linear drag coefficient byAt terminal velocity, the net force vanishes. Falling with no electric field, the upward drag force balances weight minus buoyancy. Rising with the electric force upward, the drag force reverses and joins the downward effective weight:Consequently the uncorrected estimates areThe observed direction of response, with known field polarity, supplies the sign of . A suspended drop gives the alternative balance , but it still requires a determination of : balancing a drop alone does not determine its electric charge.
For an explicitly invented continuum example, stipulate , , , , , and a downward . The balances predict , and . Substituting those speeds recovers within rounding. This checks the algebra; it is not a precision prediction for real micrometre drops, which need a slip correction.
The inference has two distinct parts. Compare inferred electric charges or charge changes with a common unit, seeking within uncertainty, rather than demanding exact ratios of rounded measurements. Then establish the absolute scale through electric field, density, dynamic viscosity and distance/time calibration. If the observed steps are all even multiples, their common spacing alone cannot exclude an unobserved smaller unit. Air motion, evaporation and mistimed crossings can alter inferred electric charge without an ion-capture event. Small Reynolds number supports Stokes's law, but does not by itself justify its no-slip continuum coefficient: a significant ratio of air mean free path to drop radius requires a slip correction. Millikan's comparison of different drop sizes and pressures addressed that systematic limitation; the modern PASCO manual also includes the correction. Agreement supports charge quantization for the observed carriers within experimental resolution, rather than proving a universal statement about every possible particle.
Multiplying by the Avogadro constant gives the Faraday constant, , the electric charge per mole of singly charged carriers. This connects counting individual electric charges with bulk electrochemistry. [ref]

. Fermion generation 2026-10-06
A generation groups corresponding quarks and leptons with the same gauge quantum numbers as their counterparts in other generations. The Standard Model has three such families. Yukawa matrices assign their different masses, and the mismatch of up-type and down-type mass bases produces the CKM matrix.
Flavor hypercharge 2026-10-06
The additive flavor symmetry quantum number combines baryon number with strangeness. For the quark triplet its values are . The Gell-Mann--Nishijima formula is . This is distinct from the normalization of electroweak hypercharge.
Flavour singlet of three scalar quarks 2026-10-20
If three quarks are hypothetically spin-zero bosons, their total state is symmetric under particle exchange. In an symmetric spatial state, the unchanged antisymmetric three-quark colour singlet therefore requires an antisymmetric quark flavour state. With three flavours its space is , of dimension one. The sole flavour state contains one quark of each flavour and has total angular momentum zero.
Gell-Mann and Zweig quark models 2026-10-18
In his 1964 paper, Murray Gell-Mann proposed fractional-charge quarks, constructing baryons and mesons from them. He also distinguished a mathematical constituent model from the hypothesis of finite-mass physical particles. The successful bookkeeping did not itself settle that distinction.[ref]

For the light quark flavors, electric charge is , with flavor hypercharge . On it gives , and additivity extends it to the baryon octet and meson octet.
Gluon self-energy 2026-10-25
The proper two-point correction to the gluon propagator in QCD. At one loop it receives quark, gluon, Faddeev-Popov ghost field and four-gluon tadpole diagram contributions. The Slavnov-Taylor identity makes the total tensor transverse, , although the individual gluon and ghost loop contributions need not be transverse. The sign of the symbol must be tied to whether the amputated insertion is defined as or .
Gluon splitting 2026-10-25
A QCD branching in which a gluon produces a quark-antiquark pair or two gluons. Quark-pair production supplies a perturbative source of sea quarks. Its rates depend on scale and on the allowed daughter quark masses.
Hyperon Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-24
A baryon containing one or more strange quarks and no heavier quark. The light hyperon multiplets include lambda, sigma, xi and omega baryons. Strong and electromagnetic interactions conserve strangeness, whereas a weak interaction can change it; a photon in the final state does not by itself make a hyperon decay electromagnetic.
Identical-quark pair spin in a ground-state baryon Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
For an identical-flavour pair in the symmetric spatial ground state of a baryon, the flavour factor is symmetric and the three-quark colour singlet is antisymmetric under their exchange. The Pauli exclusion principle therefore requires a symmetric pair spin factor. Two spin-one-half quarks then form a triplet state, , rather than a spin singlet. The conclusion applies to the identical pair in both spin-one-half and spin-three-half ground-state baryons.
Inclusive spectator model 2026-10-20
An approximation to a heavy-hadron decay in which one heavy quark undergoes a weak decay and the other constituents are treated as spectators. The inclusive leading width is approximated by a free-quark width, summed over allowed final states. confinement, final-state masses, strong-interaction corrections and interactions with spectator constituents limit quantitative lifetime predictions.
Lambda baryon 2026-10-06

Light-diquark spin-isospin correlation 2026-10-14
Two light quarks in a symmetric spatial state and the antisymmetric colour pair inside a three-quark colour singlet require symmetric spin-flavour symmetry. Their isospin singlet and spin singlet are both antisymmetric, while their respective triplets are symmetric. Thus the allowed pairs have or ; opposite exchange parities are excluded. Coupling an isospin-zero spin-one-half quark gives an baryon or baryons.
Massless collinear parton approximation 2026-10-05
Massless quark Compton scattering 2026-10-24
The two electromagnetic tree-level Feynman diagrams for exchange a quark in the and channels. Their sum obeys both photon Ward identities. Averaging over the initial quark spin, color charge and two physical incoming photon polarization vectors gives after final-state sums. The color average is one because the interaction preserves the single open quark colour index. The interference trace is proportional to for massless external states.
Massless two-flavor QCD symmetries Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
The gauge-covariant kinetic term for two massless quarks separates into left- and right-handed parts. Independent constant unitary quark flavor rotations preserve these terms, giving classical internal symmetry in addition to local color . The singlet axial has a chiral anomaly, while the nonsinglet chiral symmetry and vector baryon number remain exact quantum symmetries, up to their shared discrete identifications. Equal nonzero quark masses reduce the continuous flavor symmetry to .

Meson doublets with one isospin-singlet quark Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
An isospin-zero quark paired with or gives a meson isospin doublet of charges . Spin addition at zero orbital angular momentum gives both pseudoscalar mesons and vector mesons. Pairing the new antiquark with gives the charge-conjugate doublets. For strange or charm flavour these are the kaon or D-meson families and their vector partners.
