For independent reads in each sum, read noise contributes in squared ADU units. Hence
Using the shot-noise-only formula therefore gives
The condition for negligible contamination is , equivalently a large number of collected electrons per individual frame compared with . Summing more identical-level frames does not change that ratio because both and the read variance scale with . Measure read noise from paired bias images, or fit mean versus noise variance across several illumination levels: the shot-noise slope determines detector gain, while the read term gives an intercept. If is known, the corrected positive solution satisfies . Offset subtraction removes the mean bias but not the read variance. Correlated read errors need a different covariance calculation.
Let . After offset subtraction, each summed image has mean analogue-to-digital units per detector pixel. For a constant detector conversion gain and independent Poisson distribution detected counts, : summing independent frames adds both their means and variances. Here is the mean of the sum, not one frame.
Write , . At high counts, the delta method gives . Independence therefore gives
Thus the formula is a high-signal gain estimation from flat-field ratios, not an exact identity for a ratio of random variables. A Poisson distribution denominator can even be zero at low counts. The exposures must be linear and unsaturated, offsets removed, and read noise negligible. Being close to saturation increases the signal but does not establish linearity; clipping or charge-induced correlations biases a variance estimate. A large ensemble of suitable detector pixels supplies the measured standard deviation. In normal photodetector terminology is collected electrons per ADU, consistent with detected photons here only under the stated unit-yield convention; see the instrument gain definition.
The deep inelastic scattering process contains a virtual photon exchanged between the electron and the hadron:
Use an electromagnetic vector current containing the dimensionless quark charges, with the coupling factored out. The scattering amplitude, up to an irrelevant phase, is
To match the printed prefactor, define the leptonic tensor with a spin sum over both electron spins and keep the initial spin average outside it. The gamma-matrix trace gives
For a stationary target and massless electron, the invariant flux factor is . The inclusive final-state Lorentz-invariant phase-space measure and target spin average are contained in . Thus the differential scattering cross-section is
Here means . If the initial spin average is instead built into the leptonic tensor, its normalization is and the displayed cross-section prefactor must be doubled. The two conventions give the same observable.
Use the massless collinear parton approximation in a high-energy frame: , , and with . This neglects target-mass corrections to the parton model; it does not literally set a stationary massive target to a massless particle in the earlier flux formula.
For a quark of dimensionless charge , the electromagnetic vector current matrix element is . The spin average and gamma-matrix trace give
Integrating the three-momentum Dirac delta function in the parton hadronic tensor leaves
Since , this is
For the massless electron momenta, and . Substitution into the leptonic tensor gives
and likewise . These Ward identities eliminate every term with an exposed index in the contraction. Therefore
Here means equality after contraction with the leptonic tensor. The shortened tensor is not itself conserved; the omitted terms restore current conservation in the full hadronic tensor.
The reaction maintaining chemical equilibrium is
For and negligible chemical potentials, the electron and Positron are dilute and obey the nonrelativistic equilibrium number density. Including two spin states for each particle,
The photon number density is , so the electron-positron equilibrium pair abundance below the electron mass is
If denotes only one of the charge-conjugate species, this expression is divided by two.
Let be the present primordial helium mass fraction. If is the helium-nucleus density and the hydrogen-nucleus density, then
Since ,
This retains the correction from neutrons bound in helium. Charge neutrality requires one electron per proton, including bound electrons, so with the baryon-to-photon ratio ,
Write for the constant hydrogen-ionizing photon production rate. Assume an initially neutral gas of hydrogen atoms, a sharp spherical ionization front, complete ionization inside it, and a fixed gas density. The electron and proton number densities inside are then both . Take the recombination coefficient to be constant, with the usual Case B recombination interpretation: photons from recombination directly to the ground state are absorbed locally. Neglect absorption by dust, pressure-driven gas motion, and light-travel delays.
The total rate of Case B recombination within radius is
At photoionization equilibrium, , giving the Strömgren radius
The square of the density appears because recombination requires encounters between an electron and a proton.
During Ionization-front growth of a Strömgren sphere, each photon either replaces an ion lost through Case B recombination or ionizes an additional atom. There are ions inside the ionization front, so photon counting gives
The recombination time is . Solving this first-order differential equation with gives
For an initial radius , the corresponding result is . Initially, the idealized photon-counting solution has ; at late times, . The initially divergent front speed in this approximation is a consequence of neglecting light-travel delays; the formula describes the growth once that approximation is applicable.
For a power law density, specify a reference radius so that . With an inner cutoff , the recombination integral for a power-law nebula is
Equivalently, a logarithmic interval in radius contributes . For , the central integral converges as , and the recombination rate grows as . At , each logarithmic interval contributes equally and the centre gives a logarithmic divergence. For , the unmodified profile gives a power divergence at the centre, while its outer recombination integral converges. The change at is set by the competition between the spherical volume element and the squared density.
To regularize the centre, choose the following explicit cored power-law density profile, taking and as the core density:
For , . For , put and integrate the core and envelope separately:
This rate is continuous and strictly increasing with . If , it has a finite supremum, the critical ionizing photon rate of a cored power-law nebula:
For there is a unique finite radius at photoionization equilibrium. At the equality is approached only as ; for even ionizing the whole profile cannot consume all photons through Case B recombination, so no equilibrium radius exists. For , the envelope integral grows without bound and there is no finite critical rate in this infinite-extent model.
For a concrete choice, take any , , and . Then . In the envelope, defining gives for , explicitly showing the divergence as the critical rate is approached. A different core shape changes the numerical coefficient of , while the outer-slope condition remains the same.
At distance , isotropic luminosity produces radiative acceleration in material of opacity . In fully ionized hydrogen, one electron supplies a Thomson scattering cross-section for approximately one proton mass of material, so . Balancing radiation against the Newtonian gravitational field of the black hole gives the Eddington luminosity
Below this luminosity gravity can confine optically thin ionized hydrogen; above it, electron scattering alone accelerates the gas outward.
An electron--positron pair has mass and total scattering cross-section , so its opacity is . Therefore
The limit is lower because the radiative force per unit inertial mass is larger in a pair plasma.
For a cloud with arbitrary constant opacity per unit mass,
Suppose the luminosity jumps to a constant while the cloud is at rest at . With , its radial acceleration is
Multiplication by and integration from to infinity gives conservation of energy
This result assumes that and remain constant and that the cloud stays optically thin.
The solid electrolyte conducts oxide ions. Equilibrating oxygen at the two interfaces couples one molecule to four electrons. Taking the positive measured electromotive force as the air-reference potential relative to the Ni/NiO side, the Nernst equation is
Assume air at one bar with , pure solid phases of unit thermodynamic activity, and . For the reaction normalized to one mole of oxygen,
The negative sign is physically consistent with a strongly reducing Ni/NiO equilibrium relative to air. Using the supplied and gives
The tabulated free energies are per mole of , not per mole of NiO. Values normalized to one mole of NiO would be half as large. A reliable oxygen concentration cell measurement requires reversible interfaces, calibrated uniform temperature, a known reference oxygen pressure and predominantly ionic rather than electronic conduction through yttria-stabilized zirconia. Air is not pure oxygen: dropping the term changes the inferred entropy.
Each lithium atom supplies one electron. If all of the stated lithium is electrochemically accessible and there is enough iron disulfide, the ideal electric charge is
The voltage is not needed to calculate charge. At an assumed constant 1.5 V the corresponding ideal energy would be , but an actual discharge voltage varies with load and state of charge. Side reactions, incomplete utilization and the practical cutoff reduce accessible capacity. The preceding optimal ratio would require approximately 1.96 g of iron disulfide for this amount of lithium.
This lithium iron disulfide battery consumes a metallic lithium anode and converts iron disulfide into iron and lithium sulfide. Commercial cells of this chemistry are primary batteries. A conventional lithium-ion battery is designed for reversible cycling: lithium ions transfer between two host electrodes, commonly a carbon insertion anode and a transition-metal compound cathode, while electrons travel in the external circuit. Metallic lithium is not the intended normal anode reactant in that design. Primary Li/FeS₂ conversion is the key distinction from the rechargeable lithium-ion host-electrode system. The fact that both transport lithium ions does not make them the same battery chemistry, and a nominal 1.5 V is not a definition of either class.[ref]
Choose cyclic reciprocal units, so the incident and elastically scattered wavevectors have magnitude . Place the reciprocal lattice origin at the end of the incident vector from the sphere centre . A reciprocal vector is excited when its endpoint lies on the Ewald sphere, because
A specimen tilt rotates the reciprocal lattice relative to this construction. The very short electron de Broglie wavelength makes the sphere nearly flat across several ordinary reciprocal-lattice spacings. In a thin foil, finite thickness broadens reciprocal points into reciprocal lattice rods approximately along the foil normal, with characteristic longitudinal extent . A rod may intersect the sphere even when its ideal point is slightly off it. Consequently several reflections can appear simultaneously near a zone axis, and thinning changes the excitation tolerance. A small particle has finite-size broadening in other directions too. This geometrical excitation condition does not guarantee a particular spot intensity: crystal basis structure factors, specimen thickness and dynamical diffraction still matter.

The resolved periodic contrast comes principally from electron phase contrast: transmitted and diffracted electron waves interfere after passing through the image-forming optics. The resulting intensity depends on specimen thickness, orientation, defocus and the contrast transfer function; bright dots cannot automatically be labelled gold-atom positions without image simulation. The surrounding nonperiodic background is consistent with an amorphous support or contamination, but its chemistry is not determined by contrast alone.
The particle contains differently oriented fringe regions, and the Fourier transform has several opposing spot pairs with an approximately pentagonal/tenfold composite appearance. Together with the faceted outline, this is consistent with a multiply twinned gold particle, plausibly a decahedral arrangement, rather than one perfect cubic lattice with fivefold rotational symmetry. Opposite Fourier spots occur because the recorded image intensity is real; counting ten spots is not itself proof of a tenfold crystal. Overlapping domains, contrast-transfer effects and a slightly off-axis view can complicate the pattern. A tilt series or spatially windowed transforms across individual domains would test the twinning interpretation. The stability of such particles involves a competition among surface, twin-boundary and elastic strain energies.[ref]
A scanning transmission electron microscope makes an image by assigning a transmitted-electron signal to each position of a scanned probe. Its essential chain is electron source, probe-forming optics, scan system, thin specimen, transmitted-electron detectors and synchronized acquisition.
An electron gun and accelerating supply provide a stable beam of the chosen kinetic energy. Condenser lens optics and an aperture control probe current and convergence; the probe-forming objective lens focuses a small spot on the specimen. Alignment, focusing and astigmatism correction keep the probe usable across the field.
Scan coils deflect the probe in a raster. A stable specimen holder positions an electron-transparent region, and a high-vacuum column limits gas scattering and contamination. A bright-field transmission electron microscopy detector collects the central transmitted beam; an annular detector can select annular dark-field electron imaging, including high-angle annular dark-field imaging. Different angular selections give different contrasts, rather than a universal map of height.
Detector electronics, scan timing and a computer assign the collected signal to the corresponding image pixel. Spectrometers are useful additions but not essential to basic image formation. The post-specimen optics can adjust detector collection geometry; they do not set scan-image magnification in the same way as the projection lenses of conventional transmission imaging.

Above-gap photon absorption generates electrons and electron holes. A p-n junction's built-in field and carrier diffusion direct them toward selective contacts; their nonequilibrium populations can maintain separated quasi-Fermi levels and deliver electrical power. The equilibrium built-in voltage alone is not a battery supplying continuous power.
Choose diode current positive into the cell. An idealized characteristic is
Illumination shifts the curve downward. At short circuit ; at open circuit . Between those points, and , so the delivered power is positive.

The solar-cell fill factor compares maximum delivered power with the open/short-circuit rectangle:
Series resistance, leakage, recombination and temperature change the shape and hence the fill factor. Neither the short-circuit nor the open-circuit point itself delivers power.
For a nonrelativistic electron,
Using the supplied constants gives
This is comparable with atomic lattice spacings. A suitable crystalline surface or sufficiently thin crystal can therefore diffract the electron beam; the reciprocal-lattice geometry and scattering conditions determine the actual angles. A grating or slit can also diffract matter waves if its scale and coherence conditions are suitable. The kinetic energy is tiny compared with the electron rest energy, so relativistic corrections are negligible at the stated precision.
Across a radial section, the narrow-gap indium gallium nitride layer lies between wider-gap n-GaN and p-GaN. A suitable type-I band alignment has a downward conduction-band offset and upward valence-band offset in the indium gallium nitride, confining electrons and holes to the active layer. The original band sketch isolates those offsets; the complete junction also has doping-induced band bending.
At thermal equilibrium the Fermi level is common throughout. Forward bias separates the electron and hole quasi-Fermi levels, injects carriers from the n- and p-regions and permits electron-hole recombination in the thin active layer. A full radial line through the wire crosses two copies of the shell well; a core-to-exterior radial coordinate crosses one.
The 5 nm indium gallium nitride shell is the quantum well active region, not a metallic contact. Finite band offsets, confinement and polarization fields affect its transition energy; the bulk gap alone is insufficient.
A plausible role for the SiN mask is selective-area growth: restrict nucleation to exposed windows and suppress parasitic deposition between wires. Retained insulating material can also help prevent unwanted electrical paths during later processing. Which role dominates depends on the actual fabrication sequence. The cited source concerns core-shell single-wire LEDs and contact engineering, so a qualitative band sketch does not reproduce its complete device model.[ref]
A common implementation uses a gallium arsenide/aluminium gallium arsenide heterostructure with a two-dimensional electron gas near the interface. electrons supplied by remote donors occupy quantized normal-direction states, while an undoped spacer reduces ionized-impurity scattering. Surface metallic gates, insulated from the conducting layer, deplete selected regions when negatively biased.
Leave a small conducting island bounded by depleted regions and connect it weakly to source and drain reservoirs through two tunable constrictions. A plunger gate controls the island potential/population; barrier gates control tunnel coupling. Ohmic contacts connect the reservoirs to the measurement circuit. Vertical heterostructure confinement plus lateral depletion force defines the dot. A 2DEG without lateral gates would remain extended in its plane.
The original device diagram labels the gates, island, tunnel barriers and reservoirs. Charge stability and spectroscopy versus gate/bias should verify that an isolated weakly coupled island has actually formed; a lithographic outline alone is insufficient.

An initially localized escaping electron occupies a superposition of lead momentum states. In a uniform free one-dimensional lead,
A packet centered at moves with group velocity and generally spreads because its components have different velocities. For an initially unchirped minimum-uncertainty Gaussian wave packet,
This illustrates dispersive evolution; the actual emission contact determines and whether only outward-propagating components are appreciable. It does not instantaneously become a single lead plane wave.
A single-electron transistor used as a sensitive electrometer exploits Coulomb blockade: a nearby charge shifts the offset and therefore the conductance peaks. This requires stable calibrated capacitances and low charge noise, rather than merely a small conductor.
The more negative standard reduction potential identifies iron as the species more readily oxidized. Combining with gives the spontaneous standard galvanic cell reaction
The electron balance is two per reaction, and the activities of the pure metals are unity.
