Planck's law 2026-10-13
Planck's law gives the spectral radiance of an ideal blackbody in thermal equilibrium at absolute temperature . It predicts how much power is carried in each small frequency or wavelength interval, per projected area and per solid angle. The whole curve is determined by : no material-specific parameter enters this ideal Planck function.
Writing for frequency in hertz and for wavelength in metres, the two forms of the Planck function areHere is the Planck constant, the Boltzmann constant, and the speed of light in vacuum. Their exact values in the International System of Units are , , and . [ref]

The units matter: is measured in , whereas is measured in . Both are spectral radiance, rather than radiant exitance or energy density. To report per micrometre, multiply its per-metre value by ; a micrometre-wide interval is metres wide.
For a computed example, at and , the exponent is . Substitution into Planck's law gives , or per micrometre. At the same wavelength, the illustrative temperatures and give and in the latter units. These are ideal predictions for stipulated temperatures.
The key change of variables is . Corresponding positive intervals carry the same power, so andEqual-width wavelength intervals have unequal widths in frequency; the factor compensates for this. Merely replacing the horizontal-axis labels of by does not produce . This explains the frequency and wavelength peaks of Planck's law.
A short derivation uses the Boltzmann distribution for a single electromagnetic mode with thermal energies , . Put . The geometric series gives and mean thermal energy . The electromagnetic mode density in a box, including both independent polarization of an electromagnetic wave states of a photon, is per volume per unit frequency. Multiplication gives spectral energy density ; isotropy gives . This counts thermal excitation energy, excluding zero-point energy. [ref]

Planck's law connects quantum mechanics to a measurable radiation curve. Its small- limit is the Rayleigh-Jeans law, ; its large- limit is the Wien approximation, . The suppression at high frequency makes the total energy density finite. Integrating the curve gives the Stefan–Boltzmann law, while locating its peak gives Wien's displacement law. Thus one formula predicts both the spectral shape and the total emission.
In an effective field theory, higher-power terms in an inflaton scalar potential can be important when is large, even if is small. An assumed simple monomial inflation potential over such a field range needs a symmetry or ultraviolet completion controlling these operators and radiative corrections. A large field value alone does not establish Planckian energy density or invalidate every possible completion.
Primordial helium response to electron-neutrino degeneracy Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-07
Chemical equilibrium of , with negligible electron chemical potential, gives the stated neutron-to-proton ratio. Positive electron-neutrino degeneracy reduces the neutron fraction, whereas negative degeneracy increases it. The primordial helium mass fraction then responds through neutron-limited helium synthesis while protons outnumber neutrons; a sufficiently neutron-rich mixture instead becomes proton limited, so that trend must not be extrapolated indefinitely. Extra neutrino energy density also accelerates cosmic expansion, changing weak freeze-out and the time available for neutron decay. These effects can compete; a quantitative Big Bang nucleosynthesis calculation must account for the altered reaction rates as well as the altered expansion rate.
Radiation pressure Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-14
Radiation pressure is the normal momentum flux transferred by electromagnetic radiation to a surface. A photon travelling in vacuum carries momentum , where is its energy, its frequency, the Planck constant and the speed of light. Photon absorption transfers that momentum; specular reflection reverses its normal component. This lets light exert a force even when almost no energy becomes heat in the receiver.
Two useful formulas describe different preparations. A directed beam normally incident on a stationary perfect absorber gives pressure , and on a stationary perfect mirror gives . Here is light intensity, the incident power per beam cross-sectional area perpendicular to propagation, in . An isotropic photon gas has pressure , where is its radiation internal energy per volume, in . Stored energy density and travelling energy flux must be distinguished: an isotropic field can have zero net energy flux and positive radiation pressure.
The physical appeal is that the same momentum conservation connects a single photon collision, a mirror's measurable force, and a radiation-filled cavity's equation of state. The directional calculation below complements radiation pressure on a perfectly absorbing surface; the equilibrium spectrum and its temperature dependence belong to blackbody radiation and the photon gas.
For radiation in vacuum with isotropy, energy is distributed equally per solid angle: write for energy density per unit solid angle. Let be the angle between a ray's path and the wall normal. Its normal velocity determines the arrival rate, while normal momentum per energy is . Their product is . For a perfectly reflecting cavity wall,The leading two is the normal momentum reversal; the incoming hemisphere contains half of the field's directional energy density. This is also the normal component of the bulk pressure tensor, . Isotropy makes all three diagonal components equal, while their sum is because the squared direction components sum to one. The factor one third therefore depends on three-dimensional angular geometry, not on the shape of the blackbody radiation spectrum.
A perfectly absorbing wall exposed to this incoming hemisphere receives only from absorption. If it is in thermal equilibrium with the isotropic radiation, its outgoing emission supplies another of recoil, recovering . A cold absorber before equilibrium is a different boundary condition. Similarly, the one-way incident energy flux is , whereas the net energy flux across a plane in the undisturbed isotropic field is zero. Dividing by misses the extra normal-momentum projection and does not give the cavity pressure.
For a stipulated isotropic radiation energy density , the bulk pressure is regardless of its spectral shape. In thermal equilibrium, blackbody radiation supplies with radiation constant , so ; Stefan–Boltzmann law defines . The equilibrium photon gas derives this same equation of state from its free energy.[ref]
Skyrme baryon density 2026-10-06
The local Skyrme baryon density is , with and . It is invariant under global isorotations and transforms as a scalar under proper spatial rotations, so its contours reveal the geometric shape of a Skyrmion. For the rational map approximation for Skyrmions, , where is the angular Jacobian of a rational map. Integrating over the sphere gives , recovering the integer total charge. A decreasing profile and holomorphic angular map give a nonnegative density, but a general field may have regions of negative density; positivity is not a general topological theorem. The density is different from the energy density.
Specific enthalpy per particle 2026-10-14
For number density , rest-frame energy density and pressure , the enthalpy per particle is . In an isentropic barotropic fluid, and . It differs from enthalpy per unit mass by the particle mass when that mass is fixed. Using as thermodynamic variable gives and .
Stefan-Boltzmann constant Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
The Stefan-Boltzmann constant converts the fourth power of absolute temperature into blackbody radiant exitance:Here is the Boltzmann constant, the Planck constant and the speed of light. In the current International System of Units, these three constants have exact defining values, so is exact as an expression in them and . The displayed finite decimal is an approximation, not an exact decimal or a measured uncertainty. The 2022 recommended-constants table lists an ellipsis and an exact uncertainty for .[ref]
A dimensional check uses , and . Consequently , exactly the units needed in the Stefan–Boltzmann law.
For an equilibrium photon gas, the energy density is with radiation constant . The radiation pressure is . These describe the radiation filling an equilibrium cavity; has units , whereas the outward radiant exitance through a small opening is . The factor comes from averaging propagation directions and their projected area over a radiation field with isotropy, not from reducing the opening's emissivity.
Stiff fluid 2026-10-14
A perfect fluid with equation of state is called a stiff fluid. For positive energy density, its constant equation-of-state parameter is . The cosmological continuity equation gives . In a flat universe dominated by this fluid, the Friedmann equation then gives . This statement assumes a nonzero fluid density and negligible other components.
Stored energy of a solenoid 2026-10-14
The magnetic energy stored in a linear solenoid of constant self-inductance isin the long-solenoid approximation. The first formula is an inductor relation; the second identifies its storage with magnetic energy in the interior magnetic field, under the vacuum-core approximation. This agreement joins the electrical circuit description to the spatial magnetic field description. The expression is the vacuum magnetic energy density. [ref]

In a real coil, reducing electric current can return this energy to an electrical circuit, or release it as Joule heating in a closed RL circuit.
Vacuum domination by a scalar field 2026-10-14
A homogeneous canonical scalar field with positive scalar potential has energy density and pressure . When its potential energy dominates its kinetic energy, the equation-of-state parameter approaches . If other components and spatial curvature are negligible, the Friedmann acceleration equation gives accelerating expansion. Small initial kinetic energy is not enough to ensure long cosmic inflation; the field must also remain on a sufficiently flat part of the scalar potential, as measured by the potential slow-roll parameters.
