For a perfect-gas normal shock wave reflected from a stationary rigid wall, apply the Rankine-Hugoniot conditions for a perfect gas using signed velocity in each shock frame. The once-shocked state is the common left state for both applications. Its two relative speeds are roots of . Their product and the pressure jump eliminate the velocity, giving the displayed relation. A strong incident shock wave gives .
Normal velocity 2026-10-07
The normal velocity is the scalar component of a velocity in a specified unit-normal direction. Its sign depends on the orientation of the normal. At a material interface, no penetration equates the fluid and interface normal velocities; it does not require their tangential components to agree. Surface acoustic impedance uses a fixed inward normal-velocity convention to determine the sign of energy absorbed by a boundary.
A normal point force at height above a plane with a no-slip boundary condition is balanced by an image Stokeslet , a stresslet of tensor strength , and a source dipole of moment at the reflected point. Here the stresslet convention is , with the free-space Stokes tensor. Substitution on the plane cancels both normal and tangential velocity. The original and image forces cancel their terms, while the image stresslet cancels the remaining force-dipole term; the generic fixed-angle far field is .
One-dimensional wave equation Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-14
On the whole line, the homogeneous one-dimensional wave equation with constant wave speed is
Here is displacement in the string interpretation; is initial displacement and is initial velocity. Its two directions of travel give
This is D'Alembert's formula, including both Cauchy data. The countertravelling decomposition of the one-dimensional wave equation identifies as the right-moving travelling wave and as the left-moving travelling wave. Their sum is permitted by the superposition principle. For and , it is a classical solution. More generally, travelling waves with profiles and that are locally integrable functions solve the equation as distributions, with derivatives interpreted distributionally.[ref]

Synthetic pulse solutions: release from rest splits a profile, while matched initial velocity launches it rightward
. Details.
The synthetic diagram uses the smooth bump function defined in D'Alembert's formula, with and . Releasing this displacement from rest, , gives . Each emerging travelling wave has half the original peak. Launching the identical initial displacement solely to the right instead requires and gives , . At , the released profiles have peaks at , while the launched profile has peak at . These are calculated model values. A purely left-moving launch requires . The initial velocity therefore selects the balance of directions; the initial shape alone does not.
For indentation , the common layer displacement is . The boundary layer stream function gives velocity and pressure . Substitution into the Prandtl boundary-layer equation yields the displayed equation, with and . This is a conditional similarity construction: the constant must permit a solution of the boundary value problem.
Optical molasses 2026-10-14
Optical molasses surrounds slow chemical atoms with opposing red-detuned laser beams, usually three pairs along perpendicular axes. In the elementary Doppler cooling picture, each pair damps one component of velocity. The result resembles viscous drag, even though the atoms are moving through a vacuum rather than a liquid.
Uniform balanced optical molasses supplies velocity damping, without a restoring force towards a chosen position. An atom at rest has zero mean force wherever it sits within the uniform illuminated region. Without noise or external forces, gives
The atom approaches a position determined by its initial condition, not the beam intersection. Recoil-driven diffusion and gravity eventually remove atoms from finite beams. A long residence time in optical molasses is therefore compatible with the absence of position trapping. An optical trap provides spatial confinement by a different force mechanism; a magneto-optical trap adds a position-dependent magnetic field and suitable beam electromagnetic polarization to create a restoring force.
Steven Chu's Bell Laboratories team prepared sodium atoms by pulsed-laser evaporation of a pellet. A frequency-swept opposing beam slowed them before six crossed laser beams supplied optical molasses. The vacuum chamber used a shield coated with graphite and cooled with liquid nitrogen as a pump. Fluorescence provided the readout; the initial beams were aligned as closely counterpropagating as possible. [ref].
After equilibration, the team switched off the cooling light for a variable interval, then restored it. Faster atoms escaped during the dark interval; slower atoms were recaptured. The recaptured fraction versus delay constrained the velocity distribution and hence temperature. The inference depended on the initial cloud shape and recapture volume: Steven Chu later acknowledged adjusting a geometry correction towards the expected Doppler cooling limit. Delay was the scanned variable, and the cooling beams themselves supplied the release/recapture control; visible fluorescence alone could not establish temperature. [ref].
For radial acceleration , conserved specific angular momentum and reduce the Binet equation to the displayed linear equation. If , its angular oscillation frequency is ; attraction proportional to changes the apsidal angle. A zero of ends the physical positive-radius branch and corresponds to escape, not passage to a negative radius. A spatial self-intersection need not be a periodic return because velocity may differ.
Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
An Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process combines mean reversion with continuing random fluctuations. In the scalar model, its stochastic differential equation is
where is a standard Brownian motion. The drift points towards : it is negative above and positive below it. The coefficient sets the speed of mean reversion, while sets the strength of the random forcing. We consider a fixed or normal initial value independent of future Brownian increments, giving a Gaussian process and a Markov process.
For a stipulated example, use , , and the fixed initial value , in arbitrary consistent state and time units. Then the expected value relaxes as and the variance grows as . At time one they are about and ; the limiting variance is one. The sample paths keep fluctuating even after the expected value is close to two. The Ornstein-Uhlenbeck transition distribution describes this evolving uncertainty; Ornstein-Uhlenbeck stationary initialization instead starts with that limiting normal distribution already in place.
A physical motivation is the velocity of a particle undergoing Brownian motion: linear drag removes a persistent initial velocity, while random forcing continually renews it. The original calculation gives a normal distribution for the velocity after subtracting its exponentially decaying initial contribution, with decay rate equal to the friction coefficient divided by the particle's mass.[ref] A position coordinate in an overdamped harmonic optical trap gives another interpretation of the same scalar equation, with for spring constant and drag coefficient . Its physical assumptions and connection to measurements are developed in thermal calibration of an optical trap.
A rigid rod with moving centre and changing orientation has material velocity . Its centred rotational velocity is odd in arclength and has no resultant force, while its orientation-dependent resistance tensor couples translation to transverse force. Resistive-force theory uses per-length coefficients .
For the damped harmonic oscillator, the mechanical energy is the sum of kinetic energy and spring potential energy:
Thus is the power transferred out of the oscillator's mechanical energy. For , the rate vanishes instantaneously at a turning point, despite nonzero stored potential energy; it is not a constant loss per unit time. In eddy-current damping the loss becomes Joule heating. [ref]
For an underdamped response, advancing one oscillation period multiplies both displacement and velocity by , so . This exact cycle relation does not imply that instantaneous energy is a pure exponential function throughout each cycle.
An orbital element of the Kepler orbit having the same instantaneous position and velocity as a perturbed trajectory. Its elements vary as the perturbing force acts. Their interpretation depends on the central gravitational parameter used, for example whether static radiation pressure is included in the unperturbed attraction.
Oseen approximation 2026-10-14
The Oseen approximation retains advection of a small disturbance by a uniform incident velocity , but neglects advection of the disturbance by itself. Its steady equations are
A Stokes disturbance of a sphere decays as , so the ratio of background advection to viscous diffusion grows as . Thus the approximation resolves the outer region , where the Stokes flow expansion is nonuniform, while self-convection remains smaller by .
