Electronic heat capacity Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
Electronic heat capacity is the contribution from electronic excitations to heat capacity. A simple normal metal with a smooth density of states near its Fermi energy has well below its electron Fermi temperature. Only a narrow energy interval near the Fermi energy changes occupation on heating, explaining the small fraction of active electrons. The Debye T-cubed test separates this contribution from lattice phonons. Interactions, a superconductivity transition or other electronic structure can invalidate a constant description.
For a free target electron at rest, has threshold invariant mass . In natural units, gives incident total energy , or incident kinetic energy . Atomic binding and recoil of the rest of an atom are excluded by this free-target model. This threshold differs from photon-induced pair production.
Electron lens Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
An electron lens uses an electric field or magnetic field to make trajectories from an object point converge towards an image point. It has no glass for the electrons to pass through. In a paraxial approximation, an effective focal length permits the same first-order image geometry used for a thin lens; finite beam angles, energy spread and misalignment limit this approximation.
Electron-phonon scattering Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
In electron-phonon scattering, an electron changes its energy by while its crystal momentum changes by a phonon wavevector modulo a reciprocal lattice vector. Charge-transport relaxation weights a scattering angle by . Small-angle events can therefore relax heat efficiently while relaxing electrical current weakly. At temperatures above the phonon excitation scale, scattering becomes approximately elastic in the electron thermal shell; residual elastic disorder often dominates at very low temperature.
Electron-positron annihilation Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
Electron-positron annihilation converts an electron and a Positron into other particles while conserving total energy, momentum and electric charge. A common low-energy channel produces two photons. In the centre-of-momentum frame, negligible initial kinetic energy gives two oppositely directed photons, each with energy .
The back-to-back momentum balance makes paired photon detections a useful signature of annihilation. Motion of the initial pair changes the laboratory photon directions and energies. At larger collision energy, other final states become accessible: an intermediate virtual photon can produce, for example, a muon-antimuon pair. Thus annihilation converts the initial pair into allowed final excitations rather than destroying conserved energy.
Electron-positron thermal pair abundance Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-20
Thermal electron-positron pairs in chemical equilibrium with photons have opposite chemical potentials when the one-particle energy includes rest energy. For negligible degeneracy and , the zero-chemical-potential density per charge species is . In that nondegenerate limit, charge neutrality and the classical equilibrium product give , with net electron density . Pairs are important when . At arbitrary temperature the zero-chemical-potential marker uses the integral . Its ultrarelativistic limit is . A nonzero net chemical potential shifts the exact abundance boundary; the zero-potential curve is an approximate crossover marker.
Electron recoil 2026-10-20
An energy deposition in a target's electronic degrees of freedom, as opposed to a nuclear recoil. gamma rays and beta decay can produce backgrounds in this channel. Detector discrimination is statistical because the measured light and charge distributions have finite widths.
Electron removal spectral function Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
The electron single-particle spectral function , in a convention normalized to unit energy integral per orbital and spin, describes addition and removal energies. For the fermionic retarded Green function, , energy is referenced to the chemical potential. The occupied removal spectrum is , with Fermi-Dirac distribution . In the noninteracting limit, is a delta peak at the band energy; interactions can shift, broaden, and redistribute its weight.

Electron transfer and ionic character Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-20
The bookkeeping steps and conserve electric charge and describe the electron inventories of separated species. They do not establish a chronological mechanism in which a labeled electron jumps between two pre-existing chemical atoms and becomes a classical object owned exclusively by one of them. In a bound material, quantum mechanics determines the electron density and the total energy.
Ionic bonding and a covalent bond are useful limiting descriptions with a continuum between them. Electronegativity helps anticipate unequal sharing of electron density, but a numerical cutoff does not measure a universal fraction of ionic bonding. A partial atomic charge depends on how the electron density is partitioned; integer formal charges are a bookkeeping convention. Using in a point-charge model therefore does not claim that every partition of the actual electron density assigns exactly those values.[ref][ref]
Electron transport chain Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
An electron transport chain transfers electrons from an electron donor through electron carriers to a terminal electron acceptor. In the mitochondrial respiratory chain, some transfers drive protons across the inner mitochondrial membrane; their return through ATP synthase can drive ATP formation.[ref]
The useful separation is between an electron route and a proton route. The former ends in a redox chemical reaction; the latter changes an electrochemical gradient across a membrane. Energy coupling connects them without making electrons and protons interchangeable. An oxygen readout consequently need not be an ATP readout.
For a fixed electric charge , a time-independent electric potential and negligible collisions or radiation losses, conservation of energy gives
Here is the signed potential drop along the trajectory. A proton starting nearly at rest at and arriving at ground gains : a chosen gives , by the definition of the electronvolt. Several intermediate electrodes can distribute that drop along a tube, but the gains telescope to the same endpoint difference. Passing through more electrodes does not multiply the available kinetic energy beyond .
This is the distinction from a cyclotron. In a static electric field, a closed trip gives zero net work. A cyclotron changes the gap electric field between successive visits, so correctly timed particles repeatedly gain kinetic energy. Its limit involves the cyclotron resonance condition and relativistic detuning of a cyclotron; a single-pass electrostatic accelerator instead requires the full accelerating electric potential difference to be sustained at once. Neither machine's beam energy by itself specifies the energy released by a nuclear reaction.
Electrostatic energy Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
Electrostatic energy is energy stored in an electrostatic configuration. For localized charges in vacuum, with suitable decay at infinity, equivalent forms are and . The factor of one half avoids counting each pair interaction twice.
An ideal capacitor provides a finite example: charging it from zero gives . Point-charge self-energies diverge in the elementary continuous-field model, so pair interaction energy must be distinguished from that singular self contribution. Boundaries and an applied voltage source also matter when comparing changes in stored field energy with mechanical work.
Electrostatic energy harvesting Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
Electrostatic energy harvesting uses mechanically varied capacitance to exchange mechanical and electrical energy. A capacitor must first carry charge or be electrically biased; changing an uncharged ideal capacitor does not by itself generate stored electrical energy.
For an isolated capacitor holding fixed electric charge , its stored energy is . Pulling parallel plates apart reduces and increases : the external mechanical input works against their electrical attraction. A switching circuit can then transfer part of this increased energy to a load and prepare another cycle.
The charge-preparation step, switching losses and leakage belong in the full energy balance. At fixed applied voltage the charge changes and the voltage source also exchanges energy, so the fixed-charge formula cannot alone describe the complete generator cycle. This distinction is useful when evaluating a vibrating variable-capacitance device.
Electrostatic energy increase on equal-drop coalescence Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-24
Two isolated conducting drops of radius and equal charge merge at fixed total charge and volume. The new radius is , so its capacitance grows by only while total charge doubles. Relative to the sum of the initially separated self energies, the final electric field energy grows by . Decreased surface energy and/or applied mechanical work can supply that increase. Sufficiently large like charges need not coalesce spontaneously; energy conservation is not a guarantee of merging. A maintained external voltage would define a different problem.
For two point electric charges in vacuum, Coulomb's law gives the interaction potential energy
with zero at infinite separation. Here is the distance between them and is the vacuum permittivity. Opposite signs give negative potential energy and attraction; equal signs give positive potential energy and repulsion. For a finite collection of distinct point electric charges, sum over to count each pair once. A bulk ionic crystal requires the extended lattice sum, including both signs, rather than multiplying one attractive pair by the coordination number.[ref]
At short distances, overlapping electron density makes the simple point-charge picture inadequate. Quantum mechanics, including the Pauli exclusion principle, matters to the steep repulsive contribution. Pure attraction proportional to would collapse as ; it cannot set an equilibrium spacing on its own. A useful illustrative model is
Here scales an assumed fixed arrangement, packages its attractive contribution, and represents short-range repulsion. The constants have units energy times length and energy times length to the power , respectively. This is a model, not a fitted description of a named salt.[ref]
Differentiating gives and , so the stationary spacing is a stable minimum. For the diagram's stipulated , put and . Then
The dimensionless curves show how competing interactions select a spacing. Their energy scale and exponent are synthetic; neither is a measured lattice energy or a melting prediction.

When some charges are fixed, the terms depending on a movable charge form its potential energy in their electric potential.
Electroweak interaction Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-18
The electroweak interaction is the gauge theory that unifies the weak and electromagnetic interactions.
An instructive tension motivates the unification: the photon is massless, while the W boson and Z boson are massive; electromagnetic interaction and weak interaction also have different observed low-energy strengths and chiral couplings. A gauge theory can relate their interactions while the Higgs field gives different masses after electroweak symmetry breaking. The resulting theory predicts relationships between processes, not merely a common name for observed phenomena.
Its useful organizing principle is the combination of weak isospin and hypercharge. The surviving electromagnetic generator is in the convention used here. The photon and Z boson are different mixtures of neutral gauge fields, while the charged current uses the charged combinations. The electroweak doublet gauge-boson mass matrix explains why one neutral mixture stays massless. At low energies, a massive W boson propagator instead produces the approximate Fermi interaction, with
Here is the gauge coupling and the Higgs doublet vacuum expectation value. The inverse squared mediator mass suppresses low-energy weak rates. Unification does not require setting equal to the electromagnetic coupling : their relation is .
A striking experimental consequence is a neutral current in addition to the familiar charged current. The Gargamelle experiment tests this extra channel through visible charged secondaries, with a background problem fundamentally different from directly identifying a Z boson. The muon-neutrino electron recoil spectrum shows how the same Weinberg angle enters another process quantitatively.
Electroweak scale Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
The electroweak scale is the characteristic energy associated with electroweak symmetry breaking. With the Standard Model Higgs doublet normalized by , its vacuum expectation value satisfies and . Its smallness compared with possible ultraviolet scales motivates the hierarchy problem.
