Effusion 2026-10-14
Effusion is molecular passage through a small opening whose dimensions, including its thickness, are much smaller than the intermolecular mean free path. For an equilibrium ideal gas, the one-way particle rate through a thin hole of area is . This weights molecules by their wall-normal velocity, rather than just counting all molecules in the reservoir. [ref]

Elastic collision Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
An elastic collision preserves total kinetic energy between the incoming and outgoing states. For isolated colliding bodies, momentum conservation also holds. The kinetic energy condition supplies information beyond momentum conservation alone. [ref]
Consider a stipulated one-dimensional example with rightward positive: , , incoming velocities and . The total momentum is and total kinetic energy is . In SI numerical values, outgoing velocities satisfySubstituting gives . The root , repeats the incoming state; the outgoing separating state is , . Its momenta add to and its kinetic energies add to . The incoming and outgoing relative velocities both have magnitude , consistent with coefficient of restitution .
The inelastic collision example below uses exactly these incoming data. Both outcomes preserve total momentum, while only the elastic collision preserves total kinetic energy. These are ideal numerical examples, not experimental measurements.
Electric drift in crossed uniform fields 2026-10-06
In uniform perpendicular electric and magnetic fields, the guiding centre of a charged particle drifts with . This velocity is independent of the charge and mass; cyclotron motion is superposed on it.
Electrolyte Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-13
An electrolyte is a conducting medium in which mobile ions carry electric current, according to IUPAC Gold Book: electrolyte. In introductory chemistry, a substance that yields ions when dissolved in water is also called an electrolyte. Both usages point to the same mechanism: an electric field gives mobile cations and anions directed drift velocities.
Mobility matters as much as the presence of electric charge. In a simple ideal model of solid sodium chloride, ions are confined to their sites and do not carry a sustained transport electric current. Molten sodium chloride has mobile ions; dissolved sodium chloride gives mobile and ions in water. Real solids can have some ionic transport through imperfections; the immobile-solid picture is an introductory limit, rather than a claim that all solids are perfect insulators.
A strong electrolyte yields essentially all ions from the dissolved substance, whereas a weak electrolyte yields only a fraction under the specified conditions. Dissolved sodium chloride is a strong electrolyte. Sucrose is a nonelectrolyte: it dissolves as neutral molecules, so dissolving something does not automatically create mobile ions. Water's own small population of hydronium and hydroxide remains possible. See 11.2 Electrolytes (§11.2: strong, weak, and nonelectrolytes) and Flowers et al., Chemistry 2e, §11.4, Table 11.3: sucrose and sodium chloride.
Acetic acid is a weak electrolyte and a weak acid. In water, some neutral acetic acid molecules transfer a proton to water, producing hydronium and the negatively charged partner:Both sides have net electric charge zero. At chemical equilibrium, neutral acetic acid coexists with these ions; the fraction converted depends on the conditions. Electrolyte strength describes this extent of ion production, while concentration describes how much substance is present per specified quantity of chemical solution. A dilute strong electrolyte can contain fewer ions per volume than a concentrated weak electrolyte. Neither the words strong and weak nor a conductivity comparison alone specifies concentration.
Now specify an electrolytic cell with a positive anode on the left, a negative cathode on the right, and an approximately uniform electric field pointing right in the bulk electrolyte. With a steady external source and neglecting diffusion and convection, positive cations drift right toward the negative cathode; negative anions drift left toward the positive anode. Yet both populations contribute a rightward conventional current! For number densities and drift velocities , the transport current density isThe product of electric charge and velocity determines conventional current: for the anion, both the charge and its rightward velocity component are negative, making its rightward contribution positive. This is the same sign rule used for Electron conventional current. It follows directly from the existing charge carrier formula.
Opposite ion drift velocities contribute to the same conventional current in a specified electrolytic cell
. The positive anode is left and the negative cathode right. The upper arrows show ion motion; the lower arrows show the signs of for current density. A uniform bulk electric field is assumed; diffusion, convection, and electrode boundary layers are omitted. Arrow lengths are schematic. Details. For an independent numerical example, stipulate , , and . With the exact elementary charge , the contributions areEqual number densities of singly charged cations and anions give zero bulk charge density, while their motion gives nonzero current density. This is why a neutral electrolyte can conduct. These numbers are chosen toy inputs, not measurements of sodium chloride; maintaining sustained cell electric current also requires suitable electrode reactions. Blocking electrodes can instead lead to charge accumulation and decay of the electric current.
An electrolyte connects the microscopic motion of ions to observable electrical conductivity. A counterion-only model keeps just the mobile counterions needed to oppose a fixed electric charge; Poisson-Boltzmann equations use ideal Boltzmann distributions to model their equilibrium distributions, rather than the drift example above.
Electromagnetism Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-13
Electromagnetism describes how electric charge and electric current interact through the electric field and magnetic field . The Maxwell equations describe the fields and their sources; the Lorentz force describes the response of a particle of electric charge and velocity :The electric field can change the particle's energy. The magnetic part of the Lorentz force is perpendicular to velocity, so magnetic forces do no work; they can bend a trajectory. These are local interactions: a particle responds to the electromagnetic field at its position. [ref].
The remarkable unification is that the same Maxwell equations connect Coulomb's law, Faraday's law of induction, and freely propagating electromagnetic waves. A changing electric field contributes to magnetic circulation through displacement current; together with Faraday's law, this permits waves in vacuum without conducting matter. The Poynting theorem then explains how the fields store and transport energy. This connects the force on a charge to the energy carried by light.
In his 1865 paper, James Clerk Maxwell derived transverse disturbances and compared the propagation speed inferred from electrical measurements with independently measured light speeds. Part VI, especially §§95–97, argues that their agreement supports identifying light as an electromagnetic wave. This was a comparison with finite experimental accuracy, rather than a numerical identity between the historical measurements. [ref]

. Electron accelerating-voltage wavelength 2026-10-14
Let an Electron start with negligible kinetic energy and move through an increase in electric potential. Its electric charge is , where is the elementary charge, so the decrease in potential energy is . In a field-free region after acceleration,This is an Electron formula, not a universal conversion from voltage to wavelength. It assumes negligible initial kinetic energy, negligible losses, and , where is the speed of light. It describes the de Broglie wavelength outside the crystal; the potential energy inside a material can change the local kinetic momentum.
For , take , , and . The rounded Electron mass is consistent with the 2022 recommended constants.[ref]

The electronvolt is an energy unit: must be converted to joules before combining it with in SI units. Dimensional analysis checks both steps:The resulting velocity is about , or , so the nonrelativistic assumption is consistent. For a larger accelerating voltage, the relativistic energy-momentum relation gives , with , while still holds. At the relativistic wavelength is shorter by about . Electron magnetohydrodynamics 2026-10-14
Electron magnetohydrodynamics neglects ion motion and Electron inertia while retaining transport of the magnetic field by the Electron current. At constant Electron number density, . Elsässer energy invariant 2026-10-06
For smooth ideal magnetohydrodynamics of constant mass density, define . Taking the dot product of the Elsässer variable equation with givesTherefore each integral is constant when its outward boundary flux vanishes, for example when both velocity and magnetic field are tangent to the fixed boundary, or for periodic boundary conditions. The kinetic energy plus magnetic energy is , while the cross-helicity is .
With , lateral relative velocity , and , the Lighthill elongated-body theory force on the fluid is . Integration by parts gives and . The endpoint terms are momentum fluxes and must not be discarded when a tail has nonzero added mass. If both endpoint added masses vanish, total lateral body-plus-fluid momentum is conserved; a finite-mass body cannot then finish with zero relative crossflow and a new nonzero transverse velocity.
The difference of two solutions with the same body force, boundary traction and initial data satisfies a homogeneous elastic equation with zero boundary work. Multiplication by its velocity and integration by parts conserve the displayed positive energy. Zero initial energy forces zero velocity for all times, and zero initial displacement field then forces zero displacement field. Rigid zero-strain motions do not cause nonuniqueness after initial data are fixed. This assumes positive mass density, stable real elastic moduli and sufficient regularity for the energy identity.
Entropy mode 2026-10-14
An entropy mode is a perturbation of entropy and density with no leading pressure or velocity perturbation in a uniform ideal fluid. For an adiabatic equation of state define . An entropy perturbation can have and , so it has zero frequency in the local fluid frame. In anisotropic reduced magnetohydrodynamics, with , and turbulence mixes its variance as a passive scalar.
For equal ion and neutral mass densities, let , and use Fourier time dependence . Solenoidal displacements obey and . For nonzero frequency, the neutral equation gives . Substitution in the ion equation givesEquivalently, the growth rate obeys . A time-independent neutral displacement with zero velocity is a relabeling of a uniform fluid, not an additional wave root of the velocity/magnetic-field system.
Choose right as positive and let two carts have total moving masses and , including any attached apparatus. At an instant when their repulsive interaction has magnitude , assume no other horizontal forces. Then Newton's third law gives and , while Newton's second law givesThe smaller mass has the larger acceleration magnitude. For a nonzero interaction and zero other horizontal forces, . Meanwhile in force units. The two carts' velocities change while total momentum stays constant.
To distinguish an instantaneous force from its accumulated impulse, prescribe an original triangular interaction pulse lasting :This chosen pulse reaches at ; it is a constructed model, not an experimental trace or a claim about a particular bumper's material response. Its positive area is . The impulse-momentum theorem therefore givesOpposite impulses give opposite momentum changes, while the velocity changes differ because of the unequal masses. The cumulative positive impulse is during the first half and during the second half. Thus and cancel throughout the pulse, not merely at its endpoint.
Equal-mass circular binary 2026-10-07
Two equal point masses can move around the same fixed circle of radius in diametrically opposite positions. Their stationary centre of mass is the circle's center. A separation gives gravitational force on each mass, and Newton's second law equates it to . The common angular speed is therefore fixed by the displayed relation. Opposite tangential velocities produce the same sense of angular rotation.
