Specific latent heat of vaporization 2026-10-31
The energy per unit mass required to change a saturated liquid to vapour at a stated pressure and coexistence temperature. In a steam-condensation calorimetry experiment, sensible cooling of the condensate must be subtracted from the measured receiver heat gain.
Specific rotation Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
For a chemical solution in a validated linear regime, where is path length in and is solute mass per final solution volume in . These conventions give specific rotation units . Specify solvent, temperature and wavelength : specific rotation is conditional on the sample environment.[ref]
5.3 Optical Activity. McMurry, Organic Chemistry, §5.3: observed rotation divided by path length and mass concentration
For an original model, stipulate an unnamed enantiomer pair in the same achiral solvent at and wavelength . Assign the positive member specific rotation , assumed constant over the modeled concentrations. With and ,These are chosen model parameters, not measured properties of a named material. Doubling only or only doubles within this stipulated linear model; doubling both multiplies it by four. A real chemical solution must be checked for concentration dependence rather than assuming that is dilute enough.
For an additive mixture containing only this enantiomer pair as solutes, put and write for their mass concentrations. ThenBecause enantiomers have the same molar mass, their relative mole fractions within the pair also equal their relative mass fractions: , . Thus , which connects optical rotation to enantiomeric excess.

Spectral emissivity 2026-10-14
Spectral emissivity compares emission with an ideal blackbody at the same temperature at a specified wavelength, or frequency under a consistently transformed convention. A hemispherical spectral emissivity uses spectral radiant exitance; a directional spectral emissivity uses spectral radiance. Always state which angular convention applies. A wavelength-selective coating can emit strongly in one band while emitting weakly elsewhere, so one band measurement does not determine total hemispherical emissivity.
Spectral radiance 2026-10-14
Spectral radiance is radiance per unit frequency or wavelength interval. Its astronomical synonym specific intensity is usually written or ; this is a spectral radiance, distinct from the radiant intensity in radiometry. For positive small intervals,The two expressions refer to the same spectral slice, with the positive widths related through frequency and wavelength . For frequency measured in hertz, , the units are . For wavelength measured in metres, . Integrating over a spectral band gives its radiance, and then multiplying by the collecting projected area and accepted solid angle gives a small uniform beam's radiant flux. A spectral measurement therefore retains information that the band-integrated power alone loses.
For an ideal blackbody, Planck's law gives and at temperature , independent of outgoing direction. Its existing frequency and wavelength peaks of Planck's law illustrate why the coordinate matters. The simpler flat-band calculation below isolates that same change of variables without the thermal physics.
What separates a hydration shell from the surrounding water experimentally? Electrical conductivity addresses a different question. The documented lamp demonstration immerses metal electrodes in a chemical solution, rinses them between samples, and records brightness; adding sodium chloride to distilled water makes it conductive. A water blank and dissolved sucrose comparison test whether dissolved material alone explains the signal. Fixed geometry, temperature, and stated concentrations are additional proposed controls. This reveals mobile electric charge, with limits from contamination, electrode interfaces and detection threshold; it supplies no shell positions. Conductivity experiment on salt solutions explains the apparatus and controls in detail.[ref]
Conductivity of Solutions by Harvard Natural Sciences Lecture Demonstrations. “Setting it Up” and “Comments”
In the authored study Influence of ions on the hydrogen-bond structure in liquid water by Anne Willem Omta and others, pump-probe spectroscopy uses tunable mid-infrared pulses traversing a sample. The probe's wave polarization is set at to the pump; after the sample, splitting and polarizers select parallel and perpendicular transmission. Measuring each transmission with and without the pump gives and , the respective logarithms of the transmission ratios. Their dimensionless anisotropy isIts decay probes reorientation rather than merely loss of vibrational excitation. Dilute semiheavy water in heavy water separates the O–H and O–D bands. Varying the semiheavy water concentration checked that transfer of excitation between nearby O–H groups did not determine the decay. These apparatus and control details are from the inspected author-uploaded article, not a new experiment.[ref]
The related thesis chapter documents two O–H absorption bands in a sodium perchlorate chemical solution: approximately for groups forming hydrogen bonds to water, and for groups forming hydrogen bonds to the anion. Selecting pump and probe bands, then a later delay window, separated their responses. The anion-associated anisotropy decayed more slowly; the water-bonded component showed no resolved change in decay time across the tested sodium perchlorate concentrations. The chapter also used O–D excitation to extend observation beyond the shorter O–H vibrational lifetime. These results support distinct local dynamics rather than a permanently fixed hydration shell. Spectral overlap, finite observation windows, and the selected salts limit the inference: this does not prove that every ion leaves all distant water properties unchanged.[ref]
Spherical conductivity inclusion 2026-10-14
A sphere of conductivity in a host under a uniform incident gradient has interior gradient . Outside a sphere of radius , its potential correction is . Its polarization is inside and zero outside. Temperature and normal-flux continuity determine these coefficients.
Spin crossover 2026-10-20
Spin crossover interconverts electronic states with different total spin, often in response to temperature. For octahedral iron(II), and correspond to and . Removing electrons from metal–ligand antibonding orbitals shortens bonds in the low-spin state. Crystal packing and hydrogen bonds can affect transition temperatures.
Spin-lattice relaxation Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
Exchange of energy between magnetic spin degrees of freedom and the surrounding lattice, allowing their temperatures to approach thermal equilibrium. It permits adiabatic demagnetization to cool a solid and its attached load.
Spin overlap 2026-10-18
For two spin configurations on the same sites, their spin overlap is when they agree everywhere and when they are opposite everywhere. Two independent canonical ensemble draws must use the same quenched disorder. Otherwise their comparison mixes changes of thermal state with changes of material sample.
An original finite example uses the six equally weighted ground states of the frustrated Ising triangle. For each first configuration, the second has one identical choice, one fully reversed choice, two choices differing at one site and two differing at two sites. Thus the probability distribution of spin overlap isIt is symmetric, with but . At infinite temperature, all eight microstates are equally probable and instead . This computable change in similarity statistics is a finite-model fact, not evidence for replica symmetry breaking.
Spin polarization 2026-10-18
For a spin-one-half ensemble, spin polarization measures unequal occupation or coherent alignment of spin states. A spin-dependent energy splitting does not alone determine the ensemble's response: occupation, temperature and spin relaxation matter. A spin polarization is distinct from a net change of charge density and from the optical polarization of waves.
Spin-triplet p-wave pairing 2026-10-18
Spin-triplet p-wave pairing has pair spin and orbital angular momentum , allowing multiple order parameters beyond conventional BCS theory with zero orbital angular momentum. [ref]
The Extraordinary Phases of Liquid 3He by David Morris Lee. Lee, 1996 lecture; 1997 reprint p.658
Specifying this symmetry does not determine its microscopic attraction mechanism. A short exchange-symmetry check explains why these quantum numbers fit fermions. The spin-one-half triplet states , and are symmetric under exchange. A stipulated orbital factor proportional to relative momentum changes sign under . Multiplying any symmetric spin function by that odd orbital factor gives an antisymmetric pair wave function, as required by Fermi-Dirac statistics. By comparison, an even s-wave orbital factor needs the antisymmetric spin singlet state. This checks compatibility with exchange statistics; it neither selects a stable phase nor derives its transition temperature.
Split-off valence band 2026-10-18
Spin-orbit coupling separates the valence states from the upper manifold at the zone centre in common cubic semiconductors. If its maximum lies below the upper valence band edge, its thermal electron hole population is suppressed by apart from effective density of states factors. Neglect requires ; it is not valid at every temperature or in every material.
Stagnation temperature 2026-10-20
The temperature reached by bringing a flow to rest adiabatically while converting its kinetic energy to enthalpy. For a calorically perfect gas, . It is conserved across an adiabatic normal shock even though entropy increases and stagnation pressure decreases.
Standard enthalpy of formation 2026-10-13
The standard enthalpy of formation is the enthalpy change for forming one mole of a specified chemical substance from its chemical elements in their reference states at the stated temperature. For sodium chloride at , those reactant states are solid sodium and diatomic gaseous chlorine. Standard state specifies conditions; it does not by itself select a temperature.
Standard platinum resistance thermometer 2026-10-14
A standard platinum resistance thermometer uses very pure, annealed platinum with strain-limiting construction. An industrial platinum resistance thermometer commonly uses supported wire or a film. Their response curves differ.[ref]
The word standard describes the instrument's metrological role. Calibrated SPRTs realize specified interpolation intervals of the International Temperature Scale of 1990 and transfer reference temperatures to other thermometers.[ref]
Mercury Thermometer Alternatives: Platinum Resistance Thermometers (PRTs) by National Institute of Standards and Technology. Platinum Resistance Thermometers, opening explanation: SPRTs as ITS-90 interpolation tools
They are primary standards for realizing that practical scale, but their electrical resistance alone does not determine absolute thermodynamic temperature without calibration. Primary thermometry such as the corrected gas thermometer obtains thermodynamic temperature from a physical law. A reference in a comparison bath may be an SPRT; an individually calibrated industrial platinum resistance thermometer can also serve as a working reference with an appropriate uncertainty.Primary standards measurements of transport critical current, with specified temperature, magnetic field and electric-field criterion. Standard state 2026-10-14
A standard state is a specified reference state used to define a species' standard chemical potential . The reference convention, including temperature, must be consistent when calculating thermodynamic activities, reaction quotients, and equilibrium constants.

State function Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-14
A state function assigns a value to each equilibrium thermodynamic state of a specified thermodynamic system. Its change depends only on the initial and final states. Internal energy , entropy and enthalpy are state functions; here is pressure and is volume. Transferred heat and work belong to a thermodynamic process, rather than to a state. A system stores internal energy; it does not store separate inventories of “heat received” and “work received”.[ref]
Thermodynamics and Propulsion. Thermodynamics and Propulsion, §2.1, points 3–5 and equation 2.2: internal energy, transfer notation and signs
Use the explicit convention for heat entering and for work done by the thermodynamic system on its surroundings. For a closed system with unchanged endpoint bulk kinetic energy and external potential energy, the first law of thermodynamics readsThe notation denotes an exact differential of a state function; and denote incremental transfers. Along a reversible thermodynamic process of a simple compressible system, where is absolute temperature. These are rules for particular thermodynamic processes, not definitions of stored heat or stored work. In particular, a quasistatic process with friction can remain near thermodynamic equilibrium while producing entropy.[ref]
Thermodynamics and Propulsion. Thermodynamics and Propulsion, §5.3: reversible transfer formulas distinguished from relations between state properties
For any state function and two equilibrium states , an integral of its exact differential givesThe proof is telescoping: add the changes along a subdivided path, and all intermediate values cancel. The smooth limit gives the integral. Conversely, if an integrable differential form has zero integral around every accessible closed path in a connected region, define by integrating from a reference state. Two routes differ by a closed path, so the definition is unambiguous. This argument needs every accessible loop, rather than a local test that might miss a hole in the domain; see path independence.
The same cancellation does not hold separately for heat and work. A thermodynamic cycle has but can have nonzero net transfers, with . Nor does the fact that entropy is a state function make its general change: the formula uses a reversible thermodynamic process and its varying temperature.
This distinction makes endpoint calculations powerful. We can compute an internal energy, entropy or enthalpy difference along a convenient reversible reference path even when the actual thermodynamic process is irreversible. Its actual heat and work must still be obtained from its own boundary interactions. The appealing cancellation is visible in two reversible ideal-gas paths between the same states: a different mechanical output requires a matching difference in thermal input, while stored internal energy arrives at the same value.
