ThenFor a static potential, a photon emitted and received by laboratories at rest in the background frame has energy proportional to . Using , the scalar-force gravitational redshift isRestoring , the leading fractional shift is , where is the dimensional Newtonian gravitational potential. Near Earth's surface, an upward displacement has , hence : the receiver sees a redshift.
Thus yes: the predicted weak-field frequency shift agrees with the Pound-Rebka experiment. The calculation concerns stationary emitter and receiver, with identical local transition-energy standards; it does not add a Doppler shift due to their relative motion. Agreement with this gravitational redshift measurement alone does not establish the tensor theory of general relativity.

The Noether gauging procedure starts by allowing a constant symmetry parameter to depend on position. For an internal symmetry written as , integration by parts identifies the Noether current:up to a boundary term. Introduce a gauge field and add , with the inhomogeneous gauge transformation . This cancels the displayed variation. The current coupling has its own variation, so one iterates: add the needed higher-order interactions and corrections to the gauge transformations, and require closure of the local symmetry algebra. For an ordinary gauge theory, this reorganizes derivatives into gauge covariant derivatives and fixes the nonlinear gauge field strength. Gauging is therefore more than replacing a constant parameter by a function.
For rigid supersymmetry, the corresponding Noether current is the spinor-valued supercurrent . A local Majorana spinor parameter gives a variation proportional to . A gravitino , with an inhomogeneous transformation , cancels it through a coupling proportional to . The commutator of two rigid supersymmetry transformations is a translation. With local parameters, the translation parameter becomes position dependent, so the completion must also gauge translations: it introduces the vierbein, diffeomorphism invariance of general relativity, and local Lorentz transformations. The gravitino and graviton thus belong to the same supergravity multiplet.
For pure minimal four-dimensional supergravity, start with the free massless Fierz-Pauli action and the free Rarita-Schwinger field kinetic term. The Noether gauging procedure replaces the former by the Einstein-Hilbert action and couples the latter to the vierbein and spin connection. In a canonical normalization the leading transformations can be writtenAn overall sign or phase changes with the curvature and Majorana spinor conventions, but the relative normalization must be used consistently. To see why these terms fit together, first work to quadratic order in fermions, so the spin connection is torsion free. Varying the Rarita-Schwinger field kinetic term under produces an antisymmetric double spinor covariant derivative. The spinor curvature identity and the Einstein tensor contraction of spin curvature give, in the matching curvature convention,The resulting Einstein tensor term cancels the variation of the Einstein-Hilbert action under . This is the essential first nontrivial cancellation in the construction.
At higher fermion order, the variations of the vierbein and spin connection produce further terms. Treating the spin connection as independent makes its Euler-Lagrange field equation algebraic. Its solution is a gravitino-induced torsion connection. With and , a conventional canonical normalization givesEquivalently, with , the torsion tensor obeysThe Majorana Grassmann bilinear interchange makes the right-hand side antisymmetric in . Eliminating the spin connection generates the four-fermion completion. In the 1.5-order formalism one substitutes its solution but varies the other fields holding the connection fixed: the omitted chain-rule term is . The remaining cubic fermion variations cancel by the Clifford algebra and Fierz rearrangements. This produces the displayed supergravity action in its compact connection-dependent form. Calling this formulation on shell means that no independent auxiliary fields have been retained and that closure of the supersymmetry algebra uses the propagating Euler-Lagrange field equations; it does not mean that action invariance is obtained only by setting every variation to zero on a solution.
In the antisymmetrized kinetic term, is a spinor-valued one-form and the derivative is conventionally writtenThis is the Lorentz-covariant exterior-derivative convention for that term. If one instead uses the full affine covariant derivative of a vector-spinor, a coordinate-index connection is also present and the antisymmetrization must include its torsion tensor correction. The crucial physical distinction from pure metric general relativity is the spin connection contains gravitino-induced contorsion, rather than being the torsion-free Levi-Civita connection. It reduces to the ordinary spinor covariant derivative when the gravitino vanishes.

Take positive outward and define the separation as upper minus lower position. The Newtonian potential of a point mass gives the acceleration . Expanding its difference across a separation gives the tidal force equationThe upper particle falls slightly less rapidly, so the separation increases. If the upper particle carries the electric charge and the electric field points outward, the extra relative acceleration is . Reversing the field or placing the charge on the lower particle changes its sign. Write this signed acceleration as and put . With initial relative velocity zero and nearly constant and , the ordinary differential equation has solutionFor , the leading changes due to the tidal force and electric field are respectivelywith the stated sign convention. Thus, for a nonzero fixed electric acceleration,A laboratory of size has , so this ratio tends to zero as . This is local tidal acceleration scaling: gravitational relative acceleration is proportional to separation, whereas the electric difference persists even at coincident positions.
The duration also matters. At fixed time, in absolute size, but need not tend to zero. To keep the electrically displaced particles in the shrinking laboratory, take ; then . Alternatively a stationary terrestrial laboratory has a free-fall time of order , giving . Both make precise the small spacetime-region limit. An extended, long-running experiment can still measure arbitrarily small tidal forces.
The weak equivalence principle says that freely falling test particles with the same initial data have composition-independent motion. In particular, a freely falling frame removes the common gravitational acceleration of both particles. The electric accelerations depend on charge and cannot be removed for charged and uncharged particles simultaneously by the same change of frame.
The Einstein equivalence principle extends the freely falling laboratory statement to all local nongravitational experiments: their outcomes obey special relativity, with local Lorentz invariance and local position invariance. The strong equivalence principle also includes local gravitational experiments and bodies with significant gravitational binding energy. It asserts universality of their free fall and independence of local experimental outcomes from the laboratory's location and velocity. The two-particle experiment illustrates the local distinction between gravity and a nongravitational force; by itself it does not establish this stronger claim about self-gravitating bodies.
In a metric theory, the common freely falling trajectories are timelike geodesics of a Lorentzian metric. Normal coordinates make and the Christoffel symbols zero at one point. Fermi normal coordinates do the same along a reference timelike geodesic. The residual effects are controlled by the Riemann curvature tensor through geodesic deviation, and enter the local metric at quadratic order in distance. Curvature is a physical tidal field, so no coordinate choice removes it over a finite region.
A relativistic theory should consequently couple matter universally to the metric tensor, recover nongravitational laws in local inertial frames and recover the Newtonian limit. General relativity implements this with the Einstein field equations; the contracted Bianchi identity is consistent with stress-energy conservation. The equivalence principle motivates this geometric description but does not alone uniquely determine the field equations. Extra gravitational fields may satisfy the Einstein equivalence principle for ordinary matter while failing the strong equivalence principle because local gravitational measurements or self-gravitating trajectories depend on those fields.

Assume Newtonian gravity, spherical homogeneity, negligible pressure, and no mass flux through this sphere, so its enclosed mass is constant. The shell theorem gives a conserved specific energySubstitute , divide by , and write to obtainHomogeneity makes the energy scale as , leaving the same at every comoving radius. The sign of encodes the binding-energy sign. This Newtonian derivation applies to pressure-free matter; interpreting as spatial curvature and extending the equation to relativistic pressure components requires general relativity, rather than conservation of this Newtonian shell energy alone.

The strong equivalence principle asserts universality of free fall even for bodies with gravitational self-binding, together with independence of local experimental outcomes, including gravitational experiments, from the location and velocity of a freely falling laboratory. “Local” means that external tidal variation across the apparatus can be neglected. It does not mean that all curvature, or a laboratory's own gravitational field, can be removed. The weak principle concerns freely falling test bodies without appreciable self-gravity; laboratory composition tests alone therefore do not establish the strong version.
Lunar laser ranging supplies evidence specifically sensitive to the strong version. The Earth and Moon have different fractions of gravitational self-energy. If those fractions affected gravitational and inertial mass differently, their accelerations toward the Sun would differ and the lunar orbit would acquire a periodically varying polarization, the Nordtvedt effect. Combining lunar ranging with laboratory bounds on composition-dependent differential acceleration separates this self-energy effect. A determination available before this examination found the self-energy contribution to the Earth–Moon difference in to be , consistent with zero; see the 2004 experimental analysis. Universality-of-free-fall experiments, gravitational redshift measurements and tests of local Lorentz invariance support the weaker constituent principles, but should not be confused with a direct self-gravity test.
In general relativity, all matter couples to one metric tensor, and freely falling test particles follow its geodesics. At any event, Riemann normal coordinates give and . Nongravitational local equations reduce to their special-relativistic forms in that frame. Gravitational binding is governed by the same metric field equations rather than a separate composition-dependent force, and the local gravitational coupling is universal. These features implement the strong equivalence principle. Curvature still governs geodesic deviation, so this construction removes uniform acceleration, not tidal gravity.
To geometrize Newtonian mechanics, use a four-dimensional manifold with coordinates , absolute time and a degenerate spatial inverse metric , . For a gravitational potential define the torsion-free Newton–Cartan gravitational connection byIt satisfies and . An affine geodesic has ; choosing makes its spatial equationsThis is Newton's free-fall law. The geometry is Newton–Cartan theory, with an affine connection and degenerate metric data, rather than a nondegenerate four-dimensional Lorentzian metric. The spatial slices themselves remain Euclidean.
Use the curvature conventionIn these coordinates the quadratic connection terms vanish, and the only nonzero curvature components, apart from antisymmetry in , areIn particular and all other components of the Ricci tensor vanish. This Newtonian tidal curvature gives relative acceleration . Spatially constant gravitational acceleration can be removed by an accelerating frame because its Hessian vanishes. The Poisson equation for Newtonian gravity becomes . Fluid mechanics is compatible with the same connection: the covariant continuity equation is the usual mass-conservation equation, and the spatial Euler equation is , which includes the gravitational force through the connection.
Now replace this absolute-time geometry by the Lorentzian metric of general relativity, with signature . A perfect fluid haswhere is rest-frame energy density. In units , for a nonrelativistic fluid. The Newtonian equation suggests a covariant curvature equation sourced by . However alone conflicts with generic stress-energy conservation, because the contracted Bianchi identity gives . Among expressions linear in Ricci curvature, conservation therefore selectsA constant multiple of the metric is also divergence-free, giving the possible cosmological constant term. This is a heuristic selection using locality, universal metric coupling and second-order metric equations; Newtonian matching by itself does not prove uniqueness among every possible gravity theory.
To fix the coefficient, first set the cosmological constant to zero. The trace-reversed equation would read . In the fluid rest frame, , so . In the weak static Newtonian limit, and . For negligible pressure the Poisson equation for Newtonian gravity then requires . Restoring uses , and , giving . ThusPressure contributes to relativistic active gravity, while the low-pressure weak-field limit recovers Newton's Poisson equation. The comparison fixes the Newtonian normalization but does not fix , which is an independent parameter.

For the other coordinates, differentiate . Using givesThe first two terms combine into , with the Christoffel symbols of . Define the four-dimensional electromagnetic field tensor and raise its index with . The complete reduced geodesic equations areThis is the Kaluza-Klein geodesic Lorentz force. The Christoffel symbols describe the gravitational motion in general relativity in the four-dimensional metric tensor, while the right-hand side is antisymmetric in its lowered indices and gives the relativistic Lorentz force. In particular,Thus the force preserves the four-dimensional velocity norm, as a Lorentz force must. A particle with is neutral and follows an ordinary four-dimensional geodesic. Nonzero compact momentum gives electric charge, with its sign determined by the direction of motion around the circle.
To identify the actual charge-to-mass ratio, suppose the five-dimensional particle has mass and is its five-dimensional proper time, so . Then . Four-dimensional proper time obeys ; since is constant, satisfiesHere is in the geometric normalization of the supplied potential . The relation also follows directly from the five-dimensional mass shell, and continues to identify the effective mass when the higher-dimensional particle is massless. The distinction between the two proper times prevents mistaking itself for the physical four-dimensional charge-to-mass ratio. Apply the Grassmann Gaussian integral to a regulated finite collection of field components. Up to a field-independent measure normalization and phase,In the continuum this is a formal functional determinant, including spinor and spacetime indices. Its meaningful definition requires a regulator and boundary conditions. A complex Dirac field supplies a determinant, not the inverse square root obtained for a real commuting field.
The comparison is clean after Wick rotation. A free real scalar field with positive Euclidean operator hasTaking a logarithm gives for the scalar and for the Dirac field. The opposite statistics sign is the determinant counterpart of the minus sign for a closed fermion loop. The magnitude also differs because a Dirac field has several independent spin and antiparticle degrees of freedom.
The vacuum energy sign of a fermionic oscillator makes the comparison explicit. A real scalar mode contributes ; each independent fermionic oscillator contributes . There is one oscillator per scalar momentum, but a massive Dirac field has two particle and two antiparticle oscillators. Thus the vacuum energy densities are formallyEquivalently, the large Euclidean-time vacuum functional behaves as . Both displayed vacuum energies are ultraviolet divergent; a common regularization in quantum field theory and the appropriate renormalization are needed before comparing them. The zero-point vacuum energies of bosons and fermions have opposite signs, but do not cancel without matching masses and degrees of freedom. Normal ordering removes an additive vacuum constant in nongravitating flat-space theory. Coupling to the metric in general relativity makes that constant contribute to the cosmological constant, so it cannot simply be discarded without a renormalization condition.

An isolated uncharged collapsing star initially has higher multipole moments and possibly time-dependent motion. The changing exterior emits gravitational waves, carrying away energy and nonspherical structure. Perturbations of the final black hole decay, so the late exterior is expected to approach a stationary spacetime.
Under the regularity, asymptotic flatness, and connected-horizon hypotheses of the black-hole uniqueness theorem, a stationary four-dimensional vacuum black hole is a Kerr black hole. Since the electric charge is zero, its intrinsic parameters areThe black-hole no-hair theorem expresses the loss of independently specifiable higher multipoles: those of the final Kerr black hole are determined by . The direction of the rotation axis can be chosen by orienting the coordinates and is not an additional intrinsic parameter of the geometry.

It does not describe the entire radiating collapse spacetime with only two numbers, nor does it extend unchanged to additional long-range matter fields.

A future trapped surface is a smooth compact spacelike two-surface without boundary whose two future-directed orthogonal null expansions are strictly negative. In four-dimensional general relativity, the Penrose singularity theorem states: a time-oriented globally hyperbolic spacetime with a noncompact Cauchy hypersurface, a trapped surface, and the null convergence condition for every null vector is future null-geodesically incomplete. With the Einstein field equations, the null energy condition implies this null convergence condition; a cosmological constant drops out of the null contraction.

The closed string already contains the particle required for quantum gravity. For bosonic string theory in its critical dimension of string theory, the mass-shell condition and closed-string level matching areAt , the states are massless. After imposing the Virasoro constraints and quotienting null string states, the transverse polarization tensor decomposes into symmetric trace-free, antisymmetric and scalar pieces under . They describe a graviton, the Kalb–Ramond field and the dilaton. In particular, the symmetric trace-free sector is a massless spin-two graviton. Its number of degrees of freedom is .
The state–operator correspondence associates each physical string state with a string vertex operator. For example, the matter part of a massless closed-string vertex operator isIts conformal weights are , so its integrated form is invariant under changes of string worldsheet coordinates. At fixed insertion positions it is accompanied by from the worldsheet ghost fields. Physical vertices represent BRST cohomology classes; longitudinal changes of the polarization tensor are BRST-exact operators and decouple from physical scattering amplitudes. For the graviton, this string-state gauge redundancy becomes the linearized target-space diffeomorphism .
The Polyakov path integral computes a closed-string scattering amplitude by inserting the external string vertex operators, integrating their unfixed positions and the inequivalent worldsheet moduli, and including the worldsheet ghost fields. On a Riemann sphere three positions are fixed by the residual conformal group. For example, contractions of tachyon vertex operators produce the Koba-Nielsen factor, whose position integral gives the Virasoro–Shapiro amplitude.
The string dual resonance property means that one crossing-symmetric scattering amplitude has equivalent expansions in the different channels: its poles exhibit intermediate string states in each channel, rather than separate channel contributions being added again. The scattering-amplitude factorization at a pole identifies the intermediate particle and its couplings. Set , so and the closed-string tachyon has . For four such external states the Mandelstam variables obey . The Virasoro–Shapiro amplitude has generic -channel poles at , exactly the bosonic string mass spectrum in these units.
The massless pole gives an especially direct check. With overall normalization and , the Gamma function recurrence givesThusThe quadratic residue in contains a spin-two exchange. A scalar exchange alone could not give this angular dependence. Combined with the known massless spectrum and scattering-amplitude factorization, it identifies exchange of the graviton, with possible scalar contributions from the dilaton; the antisymmetric Kalb–Ramond field does not couple to two identical scalar tachyons here. Consequently the graviton participates in interactions, rather than being an isolated free state.
Decoupling longitudinal graviton polarizations forces a universal coupling to the conserved stress-energy tensor. Consistency of this massless spin-two gauge invariance extends the linearized coupling to the nonlinear dynamics of general relativity. At distances large compared with , the gravitational sector of the effective action begins with the Einstein-Hilbert action, alongside dilaton and Kalb–Ramond field terms and higher-derivative string corrections. The infinite tower of string states supplies the short-distance completion of this quantum gravity expansion.
Interactions are organized by string worldsheet topology. A constant dilaton gives the string coupling , and a connected oriented surface of genus has Euler characteristic . Its weight is ; with normalized external vertices,The sphere is tree order, the torus is one loop, and each additional handle adds a factor . Each coefficient is an integral over worldsheet moduli, so this is string perturbation theory in , with an independent low-energy expansion in .
For the one-loop vacuum contribution, torus modular invariance identifies with , . Integration is over the standard fundamental domain of the modular group,The potential short-proper-time region , responsible for a point-particle ultraviolet divergence, is absent. It would count metrics already represented elsewhere in . Torus modular invariance is therefore the geometric reason for one-loop ultraviolet finiteness. More explicitly, in the vacuum integrand is proportional to , with the Dedekind eta function; the complete expression is invariant under the modular group.
Ultraviolet finiteness does not make the bosonic one-loop vacuum energy finite. The remaining long-tube region is an infrared divergence from the tachyon: . It signals instability of the bosonic vacuum. Tachyon-free consistent backgrounds remove this particular obstruction, though other infrared effects must still be treated. The ultraviolet improvement comes from the extended string and the complete spectrum together with the worldsheet gauge identifications; the genus expansion remains a perturbative description of quantum gravity.

ThereforeThis vacuum-dominated doubling time describes accelerated expansion in de Sitter spacetime, with . The stipulated energy density exceeds the critical density in energy units used in Question 2 by , so it cannot persist as the dominant component of the present universe. Before baryon drag becomes ineffective, pressure in the photon-baryon fluid drives acoustic waves around initial linear cosmological density perturbations. Their comoving sound horizon at the baryon drag epoch isAfter decoupling, this preferred separation survives in galaxy clustering as baryon acoustic oscillations: a peak in the two-point correlation function and oscillations in the matter power spectrum. Its value is calibrated by early-universe physics, commonly constrained by the cosmic microwave background. The SDSS luminous-red-galaxy measurement established a peak near ; its use as a distance indicator depends on the ruler calibration rather than the length of an individual galaxy.[ref]

In general relativity, accelerated expansion requires a sufficiently negative total ; a positive cosmological constant supplies it.
A single acoustic angular scale does not independently determine acceleration, cosmological spatial curvature, the absolute sound horizon and the dark-energy equation of state. One combines redshift coverage with early-universe calibration and independent matter-density or distance information, comparing accelerating and nonaccelerating models. The galaxy selection function and redshift completeness must be modeled with random catalogues, survey covariance estimated with mock catalogues, and redshift-space distortions, galaxy bias and nonlinear broadening controlled. These tests distinguish a cosmological feature from a survey artifact. The evidence is the measured expansion history within an explicit cosmological framework, rather than the existence of an acoustic peak alone.
The inference of dark matter uses a gravitational law to turn observed motions and lensing into a mass distribution. modified gravity asks whether some discrepancies instead reveal a breakdown of that law. The strongest motivation at galactic scales is the regular relation between baryonic structure and galaxy rotation curves, including approximately flat outer rotation speeds and the baryonic Tully-Fisher relation.
In modified Newtonian dynamics, the low-acceleration spherical relation is , with at high acceleration and at low acceleration. For an isolated baryonic mass in the latter regime,Thus an asymptotically flat rotation curve and a fourth-power mass–speed relation arise from a common acceleration scale, without assigning an independent halo profile to every galaxy. This is a substantive phenomenological motivation. Distances, stellar mass-to-light ratios, gas distributions and the external gravitational environment must still be controlled.[ref]
A modification of the Newtonian dynamics as a possible alternative to the hidden mass hypothesis by Mordehai Milgrom. Astrophysical Journal 270, pp. 365–370, low-acceleration law and asymptotic rotation-speed prediction
A nonrelativistic acceleration prescription does not itself specify light bending or cosmology. A relativistic completion must determine the metric followed by photons and matter. tensor-vector-scalar gravity illustrates the need for additional dynamical fields and a specified physical metric; lensing predictions then have to be calculated within that theory rather than imported unchanged from general relativity.[ref]
Relativistic gravitation theory for the MOND paradigm by Jacob Bekenstein. Abstract and relativistic field construction, physical metric and lensing
Several observations challenge a simple replacement of dark matter by a single galactic acceleration law. galaxy clusters retain substantial mass discrepancies even after such a modification. In the bullet Cluster dark-matter separation, the dominant X-ray-emitting baryonic gas is displaced from the galaxies, whereas weak-lensing mass concentrations lie nearer the galaxies. Collisionless dark matter accompanying the galaxies provides a natural account of this separation. The inference uses a lensing model and does not constitute a theorem excluding every conceivable modified-gravity theory, but a successful alternative must reproduce the displaced lensing signal quantitatively.[ref]
The cosmic microwave background, acoustic structure, expansion history and growth of cosmic structure provide additional simultaneous tests. A theory that fits galaxy rotation curves must also supply the appropriate cosmological perturbation evolution and lensing. Adding extra clustering fields can help, but may reintroduce an effective unseen gravitating component. Solar-system and binary-pulsar agreement with general relativity constrain alternatives in their tested regimes, although a modification designed to act only at very low acceleration is not automatically ruled out by a high-acceleration test.
A discriminating programme compares dynamics, which probes the potential accelerating nonrelativistic matter, with lensing, which probes the sum of the two scalar metric potentials. Scale-dependent discrepancies, gravitational slip and environmental screening can then be tested with controlled galaxy bias and selection effects. Galaxy-scale tensions in a dark-matter model must likewise be separated from uncertain baryonic astrophysics. Regular galactic scaling relations motivate modified gravity; clusters and the combined cosmological evidence strongly challenge its simplest dark-matter-free forms. Failure to detect a particular WIMP is not positive evidence for a particular modified-gravity theory.
gravitational lensing measures the gravitational influence of matter without requiring that matter to shine. In general relativity a point mass produces small-angle deflectionFor a thin lens, with angular-diameter distances ,Image multiplicity, distortion and magnification therefore constrain projected gravitating mass, with source and lens geometry measured separately.
Strong lensing gives multiple images, arcs and Einstein rings. Their positions and, where available, time delays constrain a central mass distribution. Weak lensing measures correlated small image distortions over a larger field. Using the critical surface density for gravitational lensing and reduced gravitational shear, the convergence and shear satisfyBecause intrinsic galaxy shapes are unknown, weak shear is inferred statistically using many sources. Point-spread-function anisotropy, shear calibration, photometric redshifts, intrinsic alignments and foreground contamination must be controlled.
An inferred lensing mass can be compared with the independently estimated stellar and hot-gas mass. The bullet Cluster dark-matter separation provides a particularly informative separation of components: the collisional X-ray-emitting gas is displaced from the galaxies, while lensing mass peaks approximately follow the less-collisional galaxy component. The primary analysis combined wide-field and Hubble imaging rather than inferring lensing mass from X-ray hydrostatic equilibrium.[ref]

A compact foreground lens can create an unresolved, time-dependent magnification of a background star. Event frequency and duration constrain the abundance and mass range of compact lenses only after survey cadence, detection efficiency, blending, source sizes and halo geometry are included. Achromaticity and the expected light-curve shape help distinguish simple lensing from intrinsic variability. A null survey result does not exclude every compact-object mass at every location.
Weak-lensing correlations and small-scale strong-lens structure also test the matter power spectrum and halo substructure, potentially distinguishing cold from warm free-streaming behavior. Baryonic feedback can change the same small-scale mass distribution. There are intrinsic inversion ambiguities: the mass-sheet transformationleaves reduced gravitational shear unchanged. Source-redshift information, absolute magnification or other data can restrict such degeneracies. Lensing establishes where gravitating matter is and tests its distribution and interactions; identification of its particle species requires complementary evidence.

The phrase equivalence principle covers several related claims. The weak equivalence principle concerns the universality of free fall for test particles of negligible self-gravity, with the same initial conditions and no relevant nongravitational forces. In a Newtonian notation,Composition-independent motion requires the ratio of passive gravitational mass to inertial mass to be universal. Its common value can then be absorbed into the normalization of ; the empirical assertion is universality, not the numerical convention used to express the ratio.
The Einstein equivalence principle includes that universality and extends the claim to local nongravitational experiments through local Lorentz invariance and local position invariance. A sufficiently small freely falling laboratory should recover the nongravitational laws of special relativity. The strong equivalence principle extends the scope to local gravitational experiments and bodies with appreciable gravitational self-energy. An experiment establishing one part of the weak statement does not automatically establish these stronger claims.
The motivating elevator comparison makes both the power and the limitation clear. Release a small object in a freely falling cabin. The cabin and object share the local free fall, so the object initially floats relative to the cabin. In a cabin supported against gravity, a released object instead accelerates relative to the floor, as it does in a suitably accelerated cabin in flat spacetime. This suggested replacing a universal gravitational force by geometric inertial motion. It does not identify a finite planetary gravitational field with an accelerated frame everywhere: separated falling objects can have a measurable relative acceleration.
In general relativity, the precise local geometric statement is that one can choose normal coordinates at an event withThis eliminates the connection contribution to the geodesic equation at that point. It does not generally set the Riemann curvature tensor to zero. In normal coordinates the first metric corrections away from are quadratic in the coordinate separation, and geodesic deviation measures the associated tidal forces. Equivalence is a local approximation for finite experiments whose extent and duration make these corrections negligible; it is not an assertion that curvature has been transformed away.[ref]

There are direct experimental consequences beyond the elevator thought experiment. An Eötvös experiment compares bodies of different composition on a torsion balance, using a differential signal to test the universality of gravitational acceleration. MICROSCOPE performed an analogous test in orbit using electrostatic control of titanium-alloy and platinum-alloy test masses. Its first published result in 2017 constrained their differential free fall; this was already available before the examination. It tested a specific weak-equivalence prediction, not every possible gravitational law.[ref]

Comparisons of different atomic clocks can instead test local position invariance, including the expected gravitational redshift. These measurements constrain related but distinct parts of the framework. The principle remains important as a restriction on how matter couples to gravity and as an organizing guide for experimental tests. It does not, on its own, derive the Einstein field equations. Universally coupling matter to a metric tensor still leaves choices for that metric's action; the equivalence principle does not uniquely fix field equations. For example, a metric gravitational action containing a scalar curvature squared term can retain the same minimal matter coupling while changing the gravitational dynamics. Selecting the Einstein-Hilbert action requires further dynamical assumptions and empirical success. The present role of the principle is consequently precise and limited: it supports local relativistic physics and universal matter coupling, while curvature, gravitational field equations and their quantitative predictions remain additional content.

An inertial frame is a nonrotating frame in which all force-free test bodies follow straight trajectories with constant velocity. The qualification “all” matters: a specially chosen coordinate system can make one accelerated trajectory look straight without making the frame inertial. In practice, approximately isolated test bodies and gyroscopes help identify inertial motion; identifying the relevant forces and calibrating instruments are part of testing the theory. The definition does not select a privileged state of uniform rest.
In its usual coordinate formulation, Newtonian mechanics states in an inertial frame. A Galilean transformation, , with constant orthogonal and constant , maps the class of inertial frames to itself. It preserves zero acceleration; a time-dependent translation generally does not. In the translating frame , the same physical law reads . The extra fictitious force records the frame's acceleration, rather than a new interaction.
It is possible to state Newtonian mechanics without mentioning an inertial frame explicitly. On Galilean spacetime, let be a trajectory tangent normalized by the absolute time covector, . Thenuses an affine connection to define acceleration. The free-particle equation is . This formulation removes a chosen coordinate frame but retains the geometric distinction between inertial motion and accelerated motion. Omitting both the inertial frame language and all equivalent inertial structure would leave the law unable to specify which trajectories count as unforced.
The same distinction applies to special relativity. Einstein's original presentation uses a class of inertial frames and calibrated rods, clocks and light signals.[ref]
On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies by Albert Einstein. sections 1–3: synchronization, postulates and coordinate transformation
A geometric presentation instead uses Minkowski spacetime, its Lorentzian metric and its Levi-Civita connection. A free massive particle obeys , now with proper time parametrization and . There is no preferred inertial rest frame, but there is a distinguished family of inertial trajectories and a physical Minkowski interval.Accelerating coordinates are allowed in special relativity. They produce nonzero connection coefficients even though the Riemann curvature tensor remains zero. General relativity is needed when spacetime curvature and dynamical gravitation matter, not merely because the chosen observer accelerates. Thus neither theory requires a particular inertial frame in its coordinate-free statement; each still needs the structure that determines inertial motion.

The relativity of simultaneity creates a serious difficulty for an observer-independent global present, but a conclusion about what exists requires an additional metaphysical premise. Eternalism regards past, present and future events as equally real. Presentism restricts existence to the present. These are ontological claims; the coordinate dependence of distant simultaneity is a physical claim.
A useful argument can be made mathematically explicit. In units , consider spacetime events , and in coordinates . The Lorentz boost of velocity makes simultaneous, since . The original inertial frame makes simultaneous. Yet is in the timelike future of . Suppose one assumes that simultaneity in every inertial frame equally warrants co-reality, and that this co-reality is transitive. From the reality of one then obtains the reality of the future event . Applying the construction repeatedly puts pressure on a presentist ontology.
Two different inertial simultaneity slices connect O to its timelike future D through a distant event C; no single inertial frame makes O and D simultaneous
. Details. The extra premise does real work. There is a failure of transitivity for mixed-frame simultaneity: is simultaneous with in one inertial frame, and with in another, but are not simultaneous in any inertial frame. The physical relation therefore cannot itself be identified with a transitive relation of co-reality. Special relativity supplies the geometry in this argument, not the ontological bridge. Writing an entire history as a four-dimensional mathematical solution also does not, by itself, prove that every represented event exists in the same sense.
A presentist could postulate an additional preferred foliation. That recovers an absolute present but adds background structure absent from ordinary Minkowski spacetime, and must explain its physical role or its empirical unobservability. Alternatively, one might give a local account of becoming along a world line, rather than a single simultaneous becoming throughout the universe. The latter does not automatically vindicate global presentism, but shows why lack of a universal present is not identical to a denial of all temporal passage.
General relativity further weakens any universal identification of time with a single inertial foliation. Some cosmological solutions have a useful matter-selected time slicing; this is a property of those solutions and matter distributions. It is not an absolute simultaneity structure in every relativistic spacetime. The defensible conclusion is that relativity gives strong reasons against a fundamental observer-independent global present in its minimal structure. It does not entail eternalism without further premises about existence and the interpretation of that structure.

General relativity is not required for the ideal twin paradox in Minkowski spacetime. The relevant observable is the difference in proper times recorded by clocks that meet at departure and reunion. For a world line in one inertial frame, the clock hypothesis givesThe home clock with records . A traveler coasting outward at for and inward at for records , in the ideal short-turnaround limit. For years and , these readings are ten and eight years. The complete paths, rather than conflicting applications of reciprocal time dilation to one pair of inertial frames, determine the invariant difference.
An exactly instantaneous reversal is an idealization, not an essential premise. Replace it by a smooth timelike turnaround. The proper time accumulated in a reversal interval of home duration lies between zero and , so its contribution vanishes as the interval shrinks. The finite clock difference persists. Repeatedly lengthening the coasting legs while keeping the same reversal maneuver also changes the clock difference; the difference is not a universal function only of the peak proper acceleration.
The usual apparent symmetry fails because no single traveler inertial frame covers both legs. In the instantaneous rest frame at a traveler event , the home event assigned as simultaneous has timeHence a finite turnaround changes the home simultaneity assignment continuously. In the sharp-turnaround limit at , changing to changes that assigned home time by . This is a change in a distant relativity of simultaneity assignment, not a sudden physical jump in the home clock's reading. The full twin paradox simultaneity change reconciles the two inertial coasting descriptions.
An accelerated-coordinate calculation is also available within special relativity. Nonzero connection coefficients in that chart do not establish nonzero Riemann curvature tensor. Thus neither using accelerated coordinates nor making the traveler accelerate requires the Einstein field equations. The clock hypothesis is a physical assumption about a sufficiently ideal clock, not a guarantee that every real apparatus survives arbitrary acceleration without disturbances. Experiments such as the muon storage-ring time-dilation experiments test clock behavior in specified regimes.
Real flights around Earth also compare different gravitational potentials and require gravitational corrections, as in the twin paradox clock experiments. Those refinements involve general relativity. They do not make the flat-spacetime reunion calculation incomplete on its stated assumptions. Even two mirrored, accelerating travelers can record equal proper times; the decisive quantity is the proper time of each entire path between the common events.
Interpret the terminal infall speed as the free-fall speed from a radius much larger than the neutron star radius . In the Newtonian estimate,For fully ionized hydrogen with electrons and protons at a common temperature, there are two particles per atom and . The result of e then yieldsThis is the thermal energy scale per particle. In the same classical monatomic gas approximation, the mean random kinetic energy per particle is . Before the shock wave, the bulk kinetic energy per proton is . Distinguishing these quantities avoids an ambiguity in “particle energy”. If only the ions support the downstream pressure because electrons have not equilibrated, instead gives ; that is a different, two-temperature assumption.
These are estimates within the question's Newtonian, model. Its self-consistency is poor here: , and is much larger than the electron rest energy . Relativistic electrons, electron–positron pair production, radiation, unequal species temperatures, and general relativity can alter the equation of state and shock wave structure. In particular, the numerical must not be presented as a precision surface temperature prediction.
