Torsion constant Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-18
The torsion constant, or torsional spring constant, is the positive restoring torque per unit twist angle of a complete suspension in its linear elasticity range:Its SI unit is . The minus sign describes restoration toward the untwisted orientation. The derivative specifies a local stiffness if the response is not globally linear; using one constant over a finite range additionally requires a straight calibration curve. Return to the same zero after unloading tests recoverable elastic deformation; repeat loading in both directions to check whether the response depends on its previous loading. Staying below permanent deformation is necessary, but does not alone prove proportionality between torque and twist.
For an ideal uniform circular wire of length , radius , and shear modulus , the filament torsional stiffness is , with polar second moment of area . Uniform twist gives as the twist per unit length, soHere is stored elastic energy. Doubling the wire's radius multiplies the ideal torsion constant by ; doubling its length halves it. This explains why a long thin fiber is useful for weak torque measurement. The formula assumes linear elasticity with uniform material and circular section; it does not calibrate arbitrary ribbons, clamps, or a compound suspension. Within this ideal model, the equipartition theorem predicts an equilibrium thermal mean-square angular displacement , where is the Boltzmann constant and the uniform absolute temperature. A softer suspension magnifies both the signal and its thermal fluctuations.
Static calibration supplies known torques without assuming the unknown interaction being measured. Apply a known perpendicular force at lever arm , record the change from the unloaded twist, and useSeveral positive and negative settings test proportionality; fit the slope of applied torque against twist and retain a possible intercept. A nonzero intercept must not be silently absorbed into the slope. Convert degrees to radians before reporting . PASCO's procedure turns the Coulomb balance on its side and adds small known masses to generate a gravitational weight at the sphere's lever arm, returning the rod to its index mark by turning the dial. Its tabulated coefficient is force per degree: multiply by the lever arm and to obtain our torsion constant. [ref]

The figure's ideal static calibration uses : an applied torque of gives . Both signs lie on the same straight line. The plotted points are calculated examples, not experimental observations; they cannot demonstrate a real fiber's linearity.
Dynamic calibration instead measures the oscillation period with known total suspended moment of inertia . For negligible damping, small free oscillations about a fixed reference obey simple harmonic motion:Include the rod, mirrors, and any attachments in unless their contributions are demonstrably negligible. Keep the applied torque absent or independent of angle. If an external torque has derivative at equilibrium, linearization gives effective stiffness : timing alone then measures that combination, and stability requires . A constant applied torque merely shifts equilibrium. Non-negligible damping changes the measured period; damped torsional oscillation gives a correction under a specified damping model. Agreement between static and dynamic calibrations is a useful check on the assumed moment of inertia, reference stability, and restoring law, rather than a reason to ignore their assumptions.
Torsion of a solid circular shaft Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-25
A circular shaft twisted uniformly through small end angle over length has local engineering shear strain at radius . Its shear stress is , so the integrated torque is , using the polar second moment of area. The restoring torque has the opposite sign to the imposed twist. The stored elastic energy is . The circular cross-section is important: general noncircular sections can warp and have a different torsion constant.

Translational diffusion 2026-10-18
Diffusion of particle position, as distinguished from rotational diffusion of its orientation. Its diffusion coefficient has units of length squared per time.
In a gauge with potentials independent of y, the canonical momentum commutes with the Hamiltonian. A simultaneous eigenbasis can be chosen as , with . Periodic length gives . The kinetic y-momentum is instead and is not spatially constant. Confusing these two momenta loses the magnetic contribution to the velocity.
Transmitted velocity potential from a piston through an acoustic interface Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-06
For a finite duct segment of phase length joined to a semi-infinite medium, continuity of pressure and velocity gives the outgoing potential amplitudeAt half-integer , a large impedance mismatch can strongly enhance transmitted flux for a prescribed piston displacement.
Transverse stiffness of a stretched spring 2026-10-20
A taut spring of equilibrium length and initial tension whose ends acquire a small relative transverse displacement tilts through . Its leading transverse force is therefore . The length change is quadratic in , so using only incremental axial extension misses this first-order force. A Hooke spring with natural length has and . The unstretched limit has no linear transverse stiffness under this geometry.
Triangle Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
A triangle is the convex hull of three noncollinear points: the three vertices must not lie on one line. Its boundary consists of the three joining line segments; depending on context, "triangle" can mean this boundary or the filled region it encloses. Here a triangle's area refers to the filled region. The noncollinearity assumption excludes a collapsed shape with zero area, for which ordinary interior angles are not defined.
For example, the positions , and form a right triangle with a right angle at the origin. Taking the side of length as its base gives perpendicular height , so its area is . The height is measured at a right angle to the chosen base; it is not generally the length of another side. In this example it happens to be a side because the triangle is a right triangle.
By contrast, side lengths define a valid triangle: each side is shorter than the sum of the other two, as required by the strict triangle inequality. But , so this is not a right triangle and the Pythagorean theorem cannot calculate its longest side from the other two. The law of cosines instead gives the opposite interior angle throughThis example separates the definition of a triangle from the additional assumption of a right angle.
Every triangle in the Euclidean plane has interior angles summing to radians, a result proved in Euclid's Elements I.32.[ref] It lets two measured angles determine the third, and underlies the angle-angle criterion for similar triangles. The qualification "Euclidean plane" matters: the earlier spherical triangle demonstrates a different sum.
Tricritical sextic beta function 2026-10-05
In three dimensions, after tuning the quadratic and quartic relevant operators, the positive sextic coupling has a renormalization-group beta function with for increasing length scale . The Wick contractions connecting two sextic vertices with three propagators give the primitive logarithmic correction. The interaction is marginally irrelevant.
Tunnel photon timing in two inertial frames 2026-10-25
A runner enters a stationary tunnel of length at the tunnel-frame instant a photon is emitted towards them from the far end. The interception fraction is , where . In the runner frame, with entry at the origin, emission is at and the entrance clock simultaneously reads . The entrance is then ahead by , so the photon travels , not the contracted tunnel length . Subtracting that initial entrance gap from the entrance's motion during the photon flight gives the same interception fraction. This is a concrete application of relativity of simultaneity, length contraction and the Lorentz transformation.
For a mean-field gas of parallel infinite rods with total mass per unit length confined to radius , put , and . The isothermal solution is with mass density and enclosed line mass . Direct differentiation verifies the cylindrical Poisson equation for Newtonian gravity. Regularity requires , or ; equality is a singular core-concentration limit, not a regular equilibrium.
Two-flavour vacuum survival model 2026-10-18
For a deliberately simplified neutrino oscillation calculation, take two neutrino flavors related to two mass eigenstates by a real rotation matrix with angle . A quantum superposition acquires different phases during propagation; projecting back onto the initial neutrino flavor gives the probabilityHere is path length and is neutrino energy; the numerical coefficient incorporates unit conversion.
The path dependence has a geometrical origin. In an original spherical-Earth model, let be the radius and a fixed production height, neglecting detector depth. Let be the zenith distance of the direction in the sky from which the neutrino arrives, so means downward propagation. The backward ray from detector to production obeys . Its positive solution isThus and . The calculation explains why opposite directions test very different baselines, rather than attributing every observed direction to the same travel distance. Actual production heights and the angle between the outgoing charged lepton and incoming neutrino smear that relationship.
For an original chosen example, set and . At , gives , while gives . The first minimum is at . These are stipulated inputs, not a fit to the 1998 data. A broad distribution of true , together with energy and directional uncertainty, smooths the sharp minima.
A direct amplitude check makes the mechanism explicit. DefineThen . Taking its squared absolute value yields the displayed survival formula because . Unitarity gives : disappearance from one channel becomes conversion to the other within this closed model.
This illustration does not describe all solar neutrino propagation. Coherent forward scattering in matter changes the effective propagation operator, and three active neutrino flavors require a larger mixing description. Even in the simplified model, neutrino oscillation measures a squared-mass difference; it does not determine the absolute neutrino mass.
Two-point phase correlation function 2026-10-14
The indicator correlation gives the probability of specified phases at two points. Statistical homogeneity makes it depend on separation; isotropy makes it depend only on its length. In particular , so the connected correlation at zero separation is .
Uniform-load bending of a clamped filament 2026-10-06
Let positive transverse displacement point along a uniform load per unit length . The filament bending modulus gives energy . The variational derivative is , so resistive-force theory gives . Clamping imposes , while a free tip imposes . The steady solution isIts tip displacement is . For a submerged cylindrical filament under Newtonian gravity, buoyancy gives . This linear approximation requires small slope and negligible inertia.
Uniformly magnetized cylinder 2026-10-18
Prescribe constant magnetization , with , inside a circular cylinder of radius and length , surrounded by zero magnetization. In cylindrical coordinates, the outward unit normal on the curved surface is , soThe endcaps have outward unit normals and . Their cross products with magnetization vanish, so on each endcap. The side bound current circulates counterclockwise when viewed from , by the right-hand rule. Zero endcap surface current density does not imply zero endcap magnetic field.
For an original example, let , , and . The volume and total magnetic dipole moment areCheck the result independently using the equivalent bound current: a side strip of axial length forms a current loop with and magnetic dipole moment . Its integral over gives the same . In particular, is the sum of the equivalent loop electric currents across a full axial cut; it is not a surface current density.
The side surface current density has exactly the geometry of a continuum solenoid with , where is solenoid turn density. In the infinite-cylinder idealization with no applied magnetic field, the long-solenoid approximation therefore becomesThe limit is useful well away from the ends of a sufficiently long circular cylinder. A finite circular cylinder instead has fringing magnetic field and a demagnetizing field. For this prescribed uniform magnetization, integrate the on-axis magnetic field of a circular current loop, or substitute in the on-axis magnetic field of a finite solenoid, to obtain the central magnetic field:Our example has and , rather than unity. With the rounded vacuum permeability , this is approximately , compared with the infinite-cylinder value . These are model calculations for a prescribed magnetization, not measured values or a solution for the self-consistent magnetization of an arbitrary material.
Uniformly magnetized ring with a narrow gap 2026-10-20
A rod of magnetic path length and tangential magnetization closed by a gap of width has constant flux in the one-dimensional magnetic circuit approximation. Equal cross sections and negligible leakage give , while absence of free current gives . Their solution is the displayed pair. Gap fringing or an unspecified cross-section change requires a more detailed field model.
A homogeneous charged channel can add a constant electro-osmotic drift to the ideal electrophoretic velocity at fixed field. It changes the coefficient of a linear length-versus-entry-time law without generating a new length exponent. Charge-dependent adsorption, heterogeneous trapping or cancellation of drift followed by diffusion lies outside that simple claim; wall charge cannot be excluded as an indirect cause in every real experiment.
Uniqueness of the packed spherical bilayer radius Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
In an incompressible, noninterdigitating lipid bilayer with negligible head-group thickness, let the inner radius be , molecular tail volume and head-group area . Counting heads on both membrane leaflets and conserving tail volume gives . For , the function has derivative , starts at zero and tends to infinity. Thus exactly one candidate outer radius exists in this geometric model. A maximum tail length additionally requires and , where . Uniqueness does not establish compatibility with arbitrary molecular lengths.
U-tube differential manometer 2026-10-18
A U-tube differential manometer contains a connected column of liquid with one gas connection above each liquid meniscus. Write for the left and right pressures, and for the meniscus heights on an upward vertical coordinate. Assume constant mass density and downward gravitational acceleration of magnitude ; neglect the gas column's mass density and differences in capillary pressure. The signed vertical length difference then givesLarger left pressure means a lower left liquid meniscus: implies . Equal pressures give equal meniscus heights.
The balance follows directly from hydrostatic pressure. At a common height below both surfaces, the two points in the connected homogeneous liquid have equal pressure:Subtracting cancels the common bottom depth and leaves . The same-height rule follows from hydrostatic equilibrium, : a horizontal displacement changes no pressure, and for constant the quantity is constant throughout the connected liquid. Equal height alone is insufficient for unrelated vessels or for fluid flow with significant acceleration.
For an original constructed example, choose water of stipulated mass density , gravitational acceleration , and vertical length difference . ThenThe SI pressure unit is the pascal: the product has units . Swapping the two connections gives and reverses which liquid meniscus is lower. In equal-bore arms, volume conservation makes each surface move from its initial equal-height position; using only one surface's displacement would halve the inferred pressure. With unequal arm areas , a left fall and right rise instead obey , while the vertical length difference is still .
If the right port is open to the local atmosphere, is the left gauge pressure. Only with that reference and known atmospheric pressure can one obtain absolute pressure fromFor an explicitly stipulated atmospheric pressure of , the example gives absolute pressure. If the right port is connected to another vessel or a pressure tapping, the same reading is a differential pressure and supplies no absolute pressure without knowing that reference.[ref]
Vacuum permittivity Created 2026-09-29 Updated 2026-10-14
Vacuum permittivity is the electromagnetic constant in Coulomb's law and the Vacuum Maxwell equations. In classical vacuum, and the electric displacement field is . A material's permittivity includes its electric polarization response; vacuum permittivity supplies the common reference, not a separate adjustable material property. Its SI unit is farad per metre.
For elementary calculations, vacuum permittivity is approximately . This is a deliberately rounded value, not an exact decimal or a statement of current measurement precision.[ref]
Fundamental Physical Constants — Complete Listing by National Institute of Standards and Technology and others. 2022 CODATA adjustment, vacuum electric permittivity row: value and nonzero standard uncertainty
It sets the scale in Coulomb's law, for two stationary point electric charges with separation length in vacuum, and therefore enters the reference capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor.Since the revised SI took effect on 20 May 2019, the numerical value of vacuum permittivity in SI units is determined experimentally, rather than fixed exactly by the unit definitions. The numerical values of the elementary charge , Planck constant and speed of light are fixed exactly. The fine-structure constant is measured, andwhere is vacuum permeability. Consequently vacuum permittivity and vacuum permeability have experimental uncertainty, while their product is exact in SI units because is exact. This is a change in metrological status, not a new material dependence of vacuum permittivity.[ref]
