Single-scattering forward-plus-isotropic flux partition Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-11-05
Consider unit energy of incident radiation travelling downward into a conservatively scattering slab. Let be its unscattered transmission fraction. Of the fraction that scatters, suppose a fraction continues exactly forward and the remaining fraction has an isotropic outgoing distribution. Approximate every scattered contribution as escaping without a second interaction.
The isotropic part splits equally between upward and downward directions. The escape fractions are therefore
They sum to one, as required by conservation of energy without electromagnetic absorption. For example, and give and . Exactly forward scattering does not remove downward energy in this model; treating all scattering as backward loss would give a different result.
For a specified direct path, exponential attenuation gives with scattering optical depth . The single-escape assumption becomes unreliable when repeated scattering is important. A thick slab generally requires the angular scattering phase function and the full radiative transfer equation, rather than this two-branch bookkeeping.
Singular charge endpoint of a complex sine-Gordon soliton Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-11-05
At zero rotation the field reaches at its center. Its energy remains finite, but its charge expression is singular and has the two displayed one-sided limits. The regular local branch excludes this endpoint. A global completion must say whether and how these two limiting charge labels represent a physical state.
Singular Legendre transform of a degree-one velocity Lagrangian Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
For positive constants and nonzero velocity , consider the Lagrangian . Its canonical momentum and canonical energy are
The canonical momentum records direction but loses speed: every positive rescaling of gives the same . Its velocity Hessian matrix is , where . It has the velocity direction in its kernel, so the Lagrangian is not a regular Lagrangian and has no ordinary inverse Legendre transform in mechanics.
The expression is an energy value on the constraint surface , not an unconstrained Hamiltonian describing all positions and momenta. Using it alone in ordinary Hamilton's equations would wrongly set the velocity to zero. A constrained Hamiltonian treatment must enforce the momentum relation and its consistency with the chosen . For constant , the Euler-Lagrange equations keep the direction fixed while leaving the positive speed along the path undetermined; that freedom is exactly the information the momentum map lost.
Skew-symmetrized transport form Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-11-05
For a velocity field that need not be divergence free, the corrected transport
satisfies and therefore preserves the quadratic energy cancellation.
Skyrme term Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-11-05
The particular quartic-derivative interaction in the Skyrme model, with . Its static energy is positive and scales inversely with soliton size, opposing collapse under Derrick scaling. It is one choice of four-derivative mesonic interaction, not the whole general fourth-order chiral perturbation theory Lagrangian.
SLAC-MIT deep inelastic electron scattering experiment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-25
Starting in 1967, a collaboration at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology directed an electron beam at liquid hydrogen, providing proton targets. Jerome Isaac Friedman, Henry Way Kendall and Richard Edward Taylor participated in this experimental program.[ref]
The 1969 paper Observed Behavior of Highly Inelastic Electron-Proton Scattering reports inclusive electron spectra at and with incident energies from to . Its scaling comparison estimated under a transverse-virtual photon assumption, finding approximate agreement as a function of for and . These are the paper's conditions, not a claim of exact Bjorken scaling at every momentum transfer.[ref]
SLAC-MIT spectrometer readout and corrections Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
A movable magnetic spectrometer selected scattered electrons by momentum and scattering angle. Magnetic fields dispersed momenta at the focal plane. With relativistic electrons, the inferred momentum determines outgoing energy . Commissioning included steering the beam through the spectrometer at zero angle to check its optics and accepted solid angle. Counters sorted events into momentum and angle bins. The acceptance entered the conversion from counts to differential scattering cross-sections.[ref]
Figure 1. . Original schematic, not an engineering drawing. The magnetic spectrometer measures the outgoing electron; the inclusive final hadron state is unobserved. Details.
Radiative corrections matter because photon emission can move events from an elastic scattering peak into lower outgoing-energy bins. The analyses subtracted the elastic radiative tail before unfolding inelastic radiation. Independent MIT and SLAC procedures provided a check. An uncorrected low- tail alone therefore cannot establish deep inelastic scattering.[ref]
First test rest. With no other tangential forces, the required uphill static friction is . Its maximum is , where is the coefficient of static friction. Thus
The tangent function is increasing on this angle range, and its inverse tangent determines the last permitted resting angle . At equality, the ideal model still permits limiting rest; a larger angle excludes it. Below the threshold, setting would incorrectly impose the maximum static friction even when less is required. Static friction on an inclined plane and inclined-plane measurement of static friction develop this onset criterion further.
For a block already sliding downhill, uphill kinetic friction has magnitude , where is the coefficient of kinetic friction. Taking downhill as positive, Newton's second law becomes
Every term in the force balance scales with mass; division by removes it. Doubling mass doubles both gravitational weight and the contact forces, while leaving this acceleration unchanged if the coefficients remain unchanged. A mass-independent result is a prediction of these assumptions, rather than a universal property of every ramp.
For an original numerical model, stipulate , , and . The critical angle is . At , the normal force is ; rest requires of uphill static friction, below its bound. A resting block can stay there. If it is already sliding downhill, however, the kinetic friction is only , giving downhill acceleration . Specifying the initial state matters.
At , the downhill component of gravitational weight is , while and the static friction bound is only . Rest is impossible. During downhill sliding,
Released from rest on a sufficiently long ramp, this ideal block covers its first in , reaching speed . As an independent energy calculation, the lost gravitational potential energy is and kinetic friction removes of mechanical energy. The remaining equals by the work-energy theorem.
Figure 1.
Rest threshold and downhill sliding acceleration for the stipulated inclined-plane model
. Original model predictions with , and ; no experimental measurements. The shaded range permits rest. The blue curve applies only while downhill contact slip persists, including inside that range. The orange curve gives the frictionless acceleration. Markers show the and examples. Details.
At , downhill sliding has zero acceleration and therefore constant velocity. Below that angle, a downhill-moving block slows; when it stops, test the static friction bound again. For uphill sliding, kinetic friction points downhill, so the signed downhill acceleration instead is . The sign follows contact slip, and the downhill formula cannot be used unchanged after a reversal.
Slow neutron 2026-10-18
A slow neutron has low kinetic energy relative to the fast neutrons commonly emitted in nuclear reactions. The term covers an energy range, rather than a single speed. A neutron moderator transfers kinetic energy to surrounding matter through collisions. Slowing a neutron can increase its chance of causing particular neutron capture reactions, even though each collision has reduced its kinetic energy. The Fermi slow-neutron activation experiment made this surprising distinction experimentally visible.

SNO solar-neutrino flavor experiment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
In 2001, live days, reconstructed radius below and effective electron kinetic energy above gave a CC neutrino flux of for the assumed boron-8 spectrum. Source calibrations measured instrumental-cut signal loss. SNO's own CC–ES difference was ; comparison with Super-Kamiokande's precise ES flux gave evidence for non-electron active neutrinos. This was not an NC measurement.[ref]
In 2002 the pure-heavy water analysis used live days and a reconstructed kinetic-energy threshold. NC neutrons captured on deuterons emitted gamma rays, producing secondary electron light. The NC reaction threshold was , a different quantity. Californium-252 calibrated capture efficiency, but only detection efficiency after fiducial and energy cuts. Assays constrained backgrounds from radioactive decay and photodisintegration.[ref]
Energy, radius and direction relative to the Sun statistically separated channels. Assuming the standard boron-8 spectral shape, the NC total active neutrino flux was , consistent with stellar structure predictions. The non-electron active component differed from zero by . This established active flavour conversion, without individually tagging muon neutrinos and tau neutrinos. It did not exclude every sterile admixture.[ref]
Sodium-motive force Created 2026-10-25 Updated 2026-11-05
Define the displayed quantity as the free energy available per unit positive charge for sodium entry, with . Its negative is the signed inward electrochemical cost per charge. A reversal of the transport direction reverses the sign. At equilibrium it vanishes without requiring equal concentrations.
Softening Rayleigh-Duffing oscillator Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
The softening Rayleigh-Duffing oscillator obeys
The restoring force weakens as displacement grows, while the cubic velocity term dissipates energy. Writing gives the planar autonomous differential equation , .
The three equilibrium points are and . At the origin, the characteristic polynomial is , so the eigenvalues cross the imaginary axis at . At either outer equilibrium the Jacobian matrix has determinant , making it a saddle point for every real .
The mechanical energy
has the exact time derivative . For the linear damping removes energy; for it injects energy at small velocities, while cubic damping removes it at larger velocities. Near the origin, averaging over the leading harmonic oscillator motion , gives
Here the cubic restoring term changes the leading phase evolution but contributes zero average energy input. The negative cubic amplitude coefficient gives a supercritical Hopf bifurcation as crosses zero, with small stable cycles satisfying for .
This local calculation does not locate the later global changes in the softening Rayleigh-Duffing phase portrait. In particular, a heteroclinic cycle and a saddle-node bifurcation of periodic orbits are different events. The quartic potential is unbounded below, so the energy formula also does not establish that every initial state has bounded motion.
Soft-particle endpoint 2026-10-18
A boundary of phase space approached as a massless outgoing particle's energy tends to zero. A zero four-vector is not a physical positive-energy one-particle state. An energy bound requiring such a particle is a supremum or infimum, even when the closed kinematic interval is conventionally described using minimum and maximum. This distinction can matter when applying three-body formulas at mixed massive-massless recoil thresholds.
In energy units and , capture of a photon of energy by a massive particle into one resonance satisfies , with . Head-on incidence gives the largest invariant mass at fixed , so the threshold solves . Using gives the title expression. It is the minimum over incident angle; above that energy the exact angle is fixed by the invariant equation, not arbitrary. The soft-photon regime excludes exactly co-propagating incidence.
Solar neutrino detection Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-11-05
Solar neutrino detection asks how an invisible electron neutrino from the Sun becomes a measurable laboratory record. The Homestake experiment stores a reaction product for later counting; Kamiokande records light promptly. The former measures an exposure-integrated rate, whereas the latter can retain event times and statistical source-direction information. These are complementary ways to connect stellar nuclear fusion with neutrino astronomy.
A detector samples a weighted part of a neutrino flux, rather than counting every passing neutrino. For a target population , an ideal reaction rate is
where is the differential electron neutrino neutrino flux and is the relevant cross section. A detection efficiency belongs inside the integral if it depends on energy. Two detectors can therefore disagree in raw count rate while observing the same source. Interpreting a deficit requires both a source prediction and a detector response.
A nonrelativistic particle accepted only at a fixed flight time through an ideal uniform-field tube has fixed parallel speed . On-axis entry and wall clearance bound the independent perpendicular speed by , provided a full gyration occurs before exit. Adding parallel and perpendicular kinetic energies gives the displayed ideal energy window, where . The upper endpoint is a grazing limit; strict wall exclusion makes it a supremum.
Solubility 2026-10-14
Solubility specifies the amount that can remain dissolved at chemical equilibrium under stated conditions; it is different from how quickly a sample dissolves. Separating ions from an ionic crystal costs energy, but solvation establishes new interactions with the solvent. In water, hydration of ions couples charged ions to polar water molecules. The net enthalpy of dissolution can have either sign; entropy and concentration also enter the Gibbs free energy balance. Consequently, being a salt does not guarantee high solubility in water or any other solvent.[ref]
Low solubility must also be distinguished from weak electrolyte behavior. A small amount of an ionic compound can dissolve essentially completely as ions, giving few charge carriers because little material dissolved. Calling that a weak electrolyte solely because its chemical solution conducts poorly would conflate two different questions.[ref]
Sound intensity Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-11-05
Sound intensity is the time-averaged acoustic energy flux, a vector measured in . In linear acoustics, , where is acoustic pressure and particle velocity. Its direction identifies net energy transport, and integrating its normal component over a surface gives the acoustic power crossing that surface.
A progressive plane acoustic wave satisfies , with mean mass density and sound speed . This formula uses the relation between pressure and velocity for that particular travelling field. Two opposite equal waves instead form a standing wave with zero net sound intensity, despite nonzero root mean square pressure. A microphone alone measures pressure; inferring transported power from it therefore requires assumptions about the field, especially near reflecting boundaries.
Space heating Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
Space heating supplies energy to an occupied region to maintain or raise its temperature. The thermal balance includes heat transfer through walls, exchange with ventilating air, stored internal energy and internal sources. A simple lumped thermal model writes when all losses can be approximated by one effective thermal conductance.
At steady temperature, supplied power balances the ongoing losses; during warm-up, some also increases stored internal energy. Hot-water heating, steam heating and hot-air heating differ in how energy is carried to the room. A heat pump can deliver heat partly extracted from outside, whereas an electrical resistance heater converts supplied electrical work locally. Comparing room temperature with input power after a small controlled step tests both the effective loss coefficient and the thermal time constant of the simplified model.
