Enthalpy of atomization 2026-10-13
An enthalpy of atomization is the enthalpy change for making one mole of separated gaseous chemical atoms from a specified starting chemical substance. For sodium, the relevant step is sublimation to monatomic gas; for diatomic chlorine, it is half the compatible molar bond-dissociation energy expressed as an enthalpy.
Experimental inputs to electronegativity scales Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-20
The contrast between Pauling electronegativity and Mulliken electronegativity becomes clearer by following the measurements into the formulas. A Pauling bond-energy excess compares three compatible bond-dissociation energies; Mulliken electronegativity takes the arithmetic mean of an ionization energy and an electron affinity. The former asks how much stronger an unlike-atom chemical bond is than a stipulated baseline; the latter combines two different isolated-species energy gaps.
Actual readouts precede those model choices. In the nitrogen dissociation threshold from fragment images, fitted squared image radii versus assigned excitation energies reveal a threshold after accounting for the product quantum states. In the chlorine photodetachment threshold experiment, mass-selected anions overlap a tunable laser, and neutral-atom counts reveal the onset of electron detachment. Opposite laser directions control the Doppler shift. That second threshold supplies an electron affinity, not an electronegativity; the Mulliken scale still needs an independent ionization energy.[ref]

The largest ionization energy belongs to , while the largest Mulliken electronegativity belongs to : accepting an electron matters as well as retaining one. Using signed attachment energies in gives exactly the same results.
Stipulated inputs to Mulliken electronegativity and arithmetic-baseline Pauling electronegativity: different energies, units and orderings
. Details. Independently stipulate and for , with unlike-atom valuesThus , and the Pauling scale differences from are . If all three fictitious species are placed above on that scale, their ordering is , whereas the stipulated Mulliken scale gives . The bond-dissociation energies and isolated-species energies were invented independently: this demonstrates what the formulas do, not a measured disagreement for actual chemical elements. A unit conversion cannot force these two input models to agree.
Formula unit 2026-10-13
A formula unit is a specified compositional accounting entity for a chemical substance that need not consist of discrete molecules. For ordinary crystalline , one formula unit counts one sodium ion and one chlorine ion ; it does not identify an isolated pair within the crystal. Cohen et al., IUPAC Green Book, 3rd ed., §2.10.1(iii)(b), p. 51 defines a formula unit as a specified group of chemical atoms, rather than a unit of measurement. An amount of substance of one mole of formula units therefore corresponds to one mole of each kind of ion.
Group (periodic table) Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-20
A periodic group is a vertical column of the periodic table. For example, fluorine and chlorine are in periodic group 17, with seven valence electrons in each neutral ground state chemical atom. A shared outer electron configuration supports similarities in chemical reactions, rather than equality of every property.
HCl and DCl harmonic stretch comparison 2026-10-14
Keep the same bond force constant and approximate the nuclear masses of , , and by , , and , respectively. Here is the unified atomic mass unit, and denotes deuterium. These are chosen mass number approximations, not measured atomic masses or natural-abundance averages. With the same chlorine isotope in both molecules,This is the isotope scaling of diatomic vibration prediction. Doubling the light partner's mass nearly doubles the reduced mass, lowering the frequency by about . The factor differs from because the chlorine partner also moves.
For the same small initial stretch and zero velocity, both models start with the same internal mechanical energy , but the DCl oscillation period is longer by . In the centre of mass frame, and for HCl; and for DCl. These ratios explain which partner moves and are separate from the change in frequency.
The common- assumption belongs to the leading Born-Oppenheimer approximation: fixed nuclear positions and electric charges determine the electronic potential energy, while nuclear masses govern motion on that curve. Quantitative comparison requires actual atomic masses, departures from that approximation, and separation of anharmonicity and molecular rotation from the measured band. Even with common , the quantum harmonic oscillator predicts a different zero-point energy for each isotope.[ref]
HCl and DCl vibrational isotope experiment 2026-10-14
An actual infrared spectroscopy route is to compare gaseous hydrogen chloride containing ordinary hydrogen with its deuterium counterpart. A documented teaching experiment uses a stopcock-equipped gas cell with potassium bromide windows and a Nicolet Avatar instrument for Fourier transform spectroscopy. A nitrogen-purged flask and drying tube supply the mixture; the sample also contains sulfur dioxide. An empty sample-chamber background precedes the filled-cell scan. The absorbance trace and peak-picked spectroscopic wavenumbers are the readout. The analysis assigns and indexes and transitions separately and propagates transition uncertainties. The instructions distinguish resolvable chlorine isotope peaks from adequate precision for the intended parameter analysis. [ref]

The inference connects several models. Fit correctly assigned transitions to separate molecular rotation from molecular vibration, then compare the inferred vibrational scales using isotope scaling of diatomic vibration. Agreement supports the approximate separation between a nearly unchanged chemical bond stiffness and a changed nuclear mass. It does not make a real molecule an exact classical spring: anharmonicity shifts the fundamental transition away from the local harmonic oscillator scale, and coupling to molecular rotation shifts individual lines.
For an independent test, calculate the reduced masses from the specified isotopes and compare the inferred values . Agreement within uncertainty tests the common-curvature assumption; choosing separate values just to fit each frequency would not test it. The documented background addresses instrument and ambient contributions, but does not by itself subtract window absorption, identify contaminating species, or calibrate the spectroscopic wavenumber scale. Those require separate controls. Finite spectral resolution, blended peaks, incorrect isotope assignments, and departure from the harmonic approximation near a potential minimum limit the comparison. No numerical measured line positions are assumed here.
Homestake experiment 2026-10-18
The Homestake experiment, led by Raymond Davis Jr., used electron neutrino capture on chlorine to produce argon subject to radioactive decay. The 1968 paper reported an upper limit, rather than a resolved positive signal.[ref]
Search for Neutrinos from the Sun by Raymond Davis Jr. and others. Abstract: chlorine reaction and upper-limit result
The underground target contained tetrachloroethylene. Circulated helium swept out argon, which was trapped on cooled charcoal, purified, and put into tiny proportional counters. Electron capture back to chlorine supplies the delayed readout. Added stable argon checked extraction recovery; background counting checked spurious pulses. The capture threshold is and the product's half-life is about 35 days. The chemical extraction retains neither the original neutrino's arrival time nor its direction.[ref]
Nobel Lecture: A half-century with solar neutrinos by Raymond Davis Jr.. pp. 986, 988–991; Figs. 9–14
The reaction selects electron neutrinos, and its threshold excludes the lowest-energy part of the solar neutrino spectrum. A low count alone cannot distinguish a low source neutrino flux, a changed neutrino flavor mixture, or an underestimated loss in extraction or counting. This is why chemical recovery tests and an independent water Cherenkov neutrino reconstruction are scientifically valuable.

Ion Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-20
An ion is a chemical atom or a group of chemical atoms with a nonzero net electric charge. A positive ion is a cation; a negative ion is an anion. The whole entity carries the electric charge: a hydronium ion is a group of four chemical atoms with net charge . This definition agrees with [ref].
For an ordinary ion containing only atomic nuclei and electrons, let count all its protons and all its electrons. Each proton contributes the elementary charge , each electron contributes , and neutrons contribute zero. ThereforeThe signed integer is the net electric charge number. Removing an electron increases by one; adding an electron decreases by one. Changing the electron count leaves the atomic number, and therefore the identity of the chemical element, unchanged.
For example, a neutral sodium chemical atom has protons and electrons. Its cation still has protons, but only electrons, so . A neutral chlorine chemical atom has protons and electrons; its anion has protons and electrons, so . These are particle inventories, not pictures of atomic orbitals. See 2.6 Ionic and Molecular Compounds (§2.6: ions and ionic compounds).
Ion electric charge bookkeeping: neutral sodium and chlorine chemical atoms compared with their cation and anion
. Every colored dot counts one proton or one electron. Rows are counting arrays, not spatial models of atomic nuclei or electron shells. The net electric charges are . Details. One sodium chloride formula unit accounts for one cation and one anion, whose net electric charges sum to zero. Ordinary solid sodium chloride is an extended arrangement of ions, rather than discrete molecules. This is a useful distinction: a neutral material can contain charged constituents, and its chemical formula tells us their ratio without claiming that each pair is a separate molecule.
Ion bookkeeping connects chemistry to electric current: moving ions can transport electric charge, while stationary ions cannot supply a transport current density. In electrochemistry, both signs of ions can contribute to the same conventional current. An ion opposing a fixed electric charge is called a counterion.
Isotope scaling of diatomic vibration 2026-10-14
Near a stable equilibrium bond length , a Taylor expansion of a diatomic molecule's potential energy gives , with . Treat the internal stretch as a harmonic oscillator of reduced mass, initially omitting molecular rotation. If replacing an isotope leaves this local potential energy curvature unchanged, thenHere is the speed of light and a spectroscopic wavenumber; use consistent length units for and . The quantum harmonic oscillator gives adjacent energy eigenvalues separated by , with the Planck constant. Consequently a vibrational photon absorption can probe the same frequency scale, subject to electric-dipole selection rules.
For an explicitly approximate isotope example, assign the atomic masses of , , , and the mass-number values , respectively, with the unified atomic mass unit. These are stipulated approximations to individual atomic masses, not measured masses of molecules or natural-abundance averages. They giveThe symbol means deuterium, . Doubling the light partner's approximate atomic mass therefore produces a large predicted shift, whereas changing the already heavy chlorine partner by two mass units produces a much smaller one. A quantitative comparison with infrared spectroscopy requires actual isotope-specific atomic masses, fitted band parameters, and uncertainties, rather than identifying any arbitrary peak with .

Methane chlorination chain Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-20
Light initiates methane chlorination by photodissociation of through homolysis. The elementary bookkeeping isHere denotes the photon energy. The first propagation step replaces a chlorine radical with a methyl radical; the second regenerates a chlorine radical. Adding the two propagation equations cancels both free radicals and gives : chloromethane and hydrogen chloride are made while the chain carrier is regenerated.[ref]

Methane chlorination: initiation supplies carriers, propagation replaces them, termination removes them
. The left panel follows the reacting electron pair in homolysis, then counts chain carriers through two propagation steps. The right panel shows recombination termination. Every chemical species in this example is neutral. Electron marks are bookkeeping, not a measured electronic wavefunction or a reaction-rate plot. Details. For example, recombination of methyl radicals makes ethane and a covalent bond from two unpaired electrons, removing two carriers. Recombination of two also terminates carriers; in the gas phase, stabilization of the product requires disposal of released energy, for example to a third collision partner. The figure omits that partner. Termination competes with propagation, and further chlorination can consume chloromethane, so this cycle alone does not predict a pure product or a measured reaction rate.[ref]

Mixed chlorine-bromine ozone-loss cycle 2026-10-20
In the productive mixed-radical pathway, chlorine monoxide and BrO yield chlorine and bromine atoms; subsequent atom reactions with ozone regenerate the oxides. The net cycle consumes two ozone molecules per radical-pair event, giving when the subsequent steps are fast. The branching of a real chlorine monoxide–BrO reaction must be included if not already absorbed into its specified effective rate coefficient.
Molecule Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-20
A molecule, using the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) convention, is an electrically neutral entity containing two or more chemical atoms. Its constituents form a bound unit through chemical bonds; merely drawing a boundary around neighboring particles does not make a molecule. The neutrality requirement concerns total electric charge, not the absence of internal charge separation: water is a polar molecule with zero total electric charge.[ref]
One water molecule, , contains two hydrogen and one oxygen chemical atom. One molecular oxygen molecule, , contains two oxygen chemical atoms; a molecule need not contain different chemical elements. One carbon dioxide molecule, , contains one carbon and two oxygen chemical atoms. The molecular formula records these inventories, while molecular geometry describes their arrangement. Water and carbon dioxide are chemical compounds; molecular oxygen is a form of one chemical element.
Ordinary crystalline sodium chloride, , contains an extended arrangement of sodium cations and chlorine anions . Its formula unit specifies one of each for compositional accounting, without selecting a unique isolated pair. Bulk neutrality therefore does not imply a material consists of neutral molecules. This statement concerns the ionic crystal; the physical state and conditions matter when deciding what particles a chemical formula represents.[ref]
2.6 Ionic and Molecular Compounds. Ionic Compounds: NaCl composition and the absence of discrete molecules in the ordinary crystal
A polyatomic ion is a charged bound group of chemical atoms, such as hydronium, . A molecular ion formed by removing an electron from intact water, , retains the same atom inventory but has net electric charge . Neither satisfies the neutral-molecule definition. Distinguishing these entities makes molecular count and amount of substance and mass spectrometry interpretable: say whether the count is of chemical atoms, neutral molecules, ions, or formula units.
The useful surprise is that a molecule can be treated as one particle for motion and counting while retaining internal structure. Its molar mass connects a particle inventory to bulk mass; molecular rotation and molecular vibration reveal internal organization. The continuum approximation uses bulk fields in place of individual molecular positions and motions.
Mulliken electronegativity Created 2026-10-13 Updated 2026-10-20
Mulliken electronegativity uses both the cost of removing an electron and the energy released by accepting an electron. For specified isolated-atom states, the common ground-state convention isThe free electron's energy is the zero reference. Here is the ionization energy and is the electron affinity, positive for exothermic attachment. If attachment is instead tabulated as the signed energy change , the same expression is . Stating the sign convention prevents adding the wrong quantities. The 1934 original treated suitable valence states, which are not automatically the ground states used in this example.[ref]
Mulliken electronegativity has energy units before any additional rescaling. With and in electronvolts per chemical atom, is in electronvolts; with both in , it is a molar energy. For hydrogen, the RSC ground-state inputs are and , giving per chemical atom. For chlorine, and give . These are calculated ground-state Mulliken electronegativities, not the RSC's tabulated Pauling electronegativities.[ref][ref]
Both schemes place chlorine above hydrogen here, but their numerical differences cannot be subtracted from one another or equated. Dividing a molar Mulliken electronegativity by an energy conversion factor changes units; it does not transform it into a Pauling electronegativity. A further empirical mapping would require its own calibration and stated domain.
NaCl conventional cell and coordination 2026-10-18
Ordinary solid sodium chloride has the rock salt structure. Choose a conventional cube of side with chlorine anions at the corners and face centers, and sodium cations at the edge centers and cube center. Corner sites are shared by eight cubes, face sites by two and edge sites by four. The unit cell counts are thereforeThere are four formula units per conventional unit cell, rather than four separate NaCl molecules.[ref]
NaCl conventional-cell accounting and the six nearest unlike neighbors
. Original ideal rock salt structure geometry. The left panel includes all boundary sites before sharing is accounted for; the right panel isolates one sodium cation and its six nearest chlorine anions. Grey segments indicate distances, not discrete molecules. Marker sizes do not encode ionic radii. Details. The Bravais lattice is a face-centered cubic lattice. One choice of primitive lattice translation vectors and atomic basis isThe determinant gives a primitive unit cell volume of ; that cell represents one cation and one anion. Four such volumes make the conventional cube. The union of all ion positions resembles a primitive cubic lattice of step only if the chemical labels are discarded: translation by exchanges unlike ions and fails to preserve the chemical structure.
Each ion has six nearest unlike neighbors at distance , along the positive and negative directions of the three cube axes. Thus the coordination number is six. Within either same-species face-centered cubic lattice, the nearest same-ion neighbors instead number twelve: their displacements are permutations of , all of length . Since , those twelve are a more distant shell in the complete sodium chloride structure. The number twelve describes the same-ion FCC lattice neighborhood; six describes the nearest unlike-ion neighborhood.
Ozone-depletion potential 2026-10-20
A relative measure of stratospheric ozone destruction associated with emissions of a substance, conventionally referenced to CFC-11. It depends on atmospheric survival, transport, halogen delivery and catalytic effectiveness, not only the number of chlorine atoms in the formula. Fluorine-only replacements can have negligible direct ozone-depletion potential while remaining strong greenhouse gases.
Past exam of the chemistry B course of the University of Cambridge 2021 Paper 1 B3 b Solution 2026-10-20
Both reactions are E2 eliminations requiring an axial chloride and an axial beta hydrogen in an antiperiplanar conformation relative to the C–Cl bond. The reacting C–H bond supplies the alkene bond as the C–Cl bond breaks; hydroxide accepts the proton.
For the trans-1,2 substrate, the low-energy chair has methyl and chlorine both equatorial. ring inversion is needed to place chlorine axial, but this also places methyl axial. The population of the reactive chair is consequently small, explaining the slow reaction. At the methyl-bearing neighboring carbon the axial position is occupied by methyl, not hydrogen. Only the other beta carbon has the needed anti axial H, so elimination gives 3-methylcyclohexene rather than the more substituted alkene.
For the cis substrate, a favorable chair has methyl equatorial and chlorine axial. It can react without paying the axial-methyl penalty, explaining the faster rate. Both adjacent carbons now supply an anti axial hydrogen. Removing the H on the methyl-bearing carbon gives 1-methylcyclohexene, the major product; removing the other gives 3-methylcyclohexene, the minor product. The former has the more substituted double bond.
Thus alkene stability selects between accessible pathways in the cis case, but it cannot create the missing antiperiplanar conformation H in the trans case.
Past exam of the chemistry B course of the University of Cambridge 2021 Paper 1 B5 b ii Solution 2026-10-20
Two molecules of the aminopyridine form a self-complementary dimer through two N–H···N contacts. In each direction, one exocyclic amino hydrogen is the donor and the pyridine ring nitrogen of the other molecule is the acceptor.
Orient the two amino/pyridine-N edges toward one another, as in the second panel of the original homodimer drawing. Each molecule donates one NH and accepts at one ring N; the second amino H remains available for additional packing contacts. The chlorine substituent is retained but is not one of the two principal donor–acceptor sites.
