Kerr effect Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
The Kerr effect is a change in a material's refractive index quadratic in an applied electric field. A static applied electric field can produce linear birefringence; the optical field itself can also produce an intensity-dependent refractive index in nonlinear optics.
Lamb-Retherford experiment Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
In 1947, Willis Eugene Lamb Jr. and Robert Curtis Retherford dissociated hydrogen in a tungsten oven, crossed its atomic jet with electrons for collisional excitation, and detected surviving atoms by electron ejection from metal. An electrometer and galvanometer read the current. They interrupted fixed-frequency microwaves while sweeping the static magnetic field; a flip coil calibrated the field. Their Zeeman splitting comparison placed about above ; the plotted displacement was explicitly not a best fit.[ref]
The 1955 lecture's apparatus cross-section identifies movable slits, an electron bombarder, a radiofrequency transmission line with beam slots, a d.c. quenching electrode, metal target, electron collector, and magnet poles. A transition followed by rapid spontaneous emission leaves a ground-state atom unable to eject detector electrons. The scan holds radiofrequency and amplitude fixed. Natural linewidth and unresolved hyperfine structure broaden resonances, whose analysis yields zero-field separations.[ref]
Static electric field quenching supplied a control. The 1947 report identifies natural linewidth, hyperfine structure, excessive microwave intensity, and field inhomogeneity as width contributions, and flags imperfect magnetic calibration. It does not specify an absolute microwave-frequency calibration procedure.[ref]

Metastable beam preparation and electron-current readout
. Original functional schematic of the Lamb-Retherford measurement principle, based on the apparatus descriptions above. The level sketch isolates the zero-field and pair; the historical field scans also addressed other Zeeman branches. Geometry and energy gaps are not to scale. Details.
The surname is Robert Curtis Retherford's: “Retherford” and “Rutherford” name different people. The historical Lamb-Retherford experiment should retain the former spelling.[ref]
Lamb shift quenching readout Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
For a simple original detector model, let be the incident rate of surviving atoms, the positive elementary charge, the mean number of collected electrons per incident atom, and a stable background current. Take current magnitudes as positive. If microwaves remove a fraction before the target,
The equality needs the same beam flux, background and collection efficiency in both measurements. It is an ideal interpretation of a normalized current loss, not a claim that an actual galvanometer directly counts individual transitions. Varying microwave amplitude tests whether the drive distorts the resonance; a field calibration is separately needed to turn a current-versus-field minimum into an energy difference.
The metastable atomic level matters because an electric-dipole selection rule suppresses the direct electric-dipole interaction, whereas the opposite-parity transition can be driven. A long lifetime can store the prepared population until interrogation. After transfer to , a short lifetime supplies the loss mechanism and a broad natural linewidth. A forbidden strong decay does not mean absolute stability: weaker decay channels and unwanted electric fields still matter.
Liénard-Wiechert field 2026-10-18
The Liénard-Wiechert field is the electric field and magnetic field obtained from the retarded potentials of a moving point charge. In the nonrelativistic radiation zone, the electric radiation field is at retarded time. Its outgoing Poynting vector integrates to the Larmor formula. Coulomb and induction fields must also be retained when a near-field calculation is required.
A motivating experiment used isolated membranes from A-431 biological cells, which supplied abundant EGFR. Separate membrane aliquots were incubated at with ATP carrying radioactive phosphorus in its terminal phosphate group, plus magnesium or manganese ions. Radioactivity in material recovered by chemical acid-induced precipitation supplied the readout. Adding EGF beforehand enhanced incorporation relative to the unstimulated preparation; this placed a ligand-dependent biochemical response in a cell-free membrane system.[ref]
The follow-up comparisons separated increased addition from suppressed removal: phosphate removal was rapid but unaffected by EGF, and anti-EGF antibody reversed activation by removing the ligand. These observations support reversible regulation of membrane-associated protein kinase activity.[ref] Total incorporation alone cannot identify which protein or amino acid residue received the label, prove intrinsic receptor catalysis, or predict an intact biological cell's response.
The same account records an instructive identification error: receptor phosphorylation was initially assigned to the wrong amino acid residue because released modified amino acids migrated together in the electrophoretic electric field. Reanalysis identified phosphotyrosine residues. Retained radioactivity is evidence about the assay's separation and detection, not unique chemical identity.[ref]
Light intensity 2026-10-13
Here light intensity means the time-averaged energy flux per perpendicular area for light. It is the propagation-direction component of the averaged Poynting vector. For plane electromagnetic waves in the same medium it is proportional to squared electric field wave amplitude, giving the projection-squared factor in Malus's law.
Integrating the electric field across a linearly graded p-n junction gives , where positive means forward bias. Thus the depletion region width depends on the cube root of the remaining barrier voltage. Both the space-charge density and integration range grow with width; this differs from the square-root width law of an abrupt uniformly doped junction.
Linear polarization 2026-10-06
A wave is linearly polarized when its oscillating electric field always lies along one fixed line. For a transverse plane wave, that line is perpendicular to the wavevector. Unlike circular polarization, the field oscillates along the line rather than rotating through directions.
Linear Stark effect in the first excited hydrogen eigenspace Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
Consider a fixed proton and one electron, omitting spin, fine structure and the Lamb shift. Let be the elementary charge, the Bohr radius in this fixed-nucleus model, and . Because the electron's electric dipole moment is , its electric-dipole interaction is
The first excited hydrogen eigenspace has a common unperturbed energy eigenvalue . Write and in the hydrogen energy eigenbasis. The electric-dipole selection rules for hydrogen leave only the coupling within this eigenspace. Each diagonal matrix element vanishes by parity, but that does not make the entire perturbation vanish. Degenerate perturbation theory requires its eigenvalues in the whole eigenspace. With the usual real wavefunction phases the off-diagonal position matrix element is .[ref]
The factor three can be checked directly. Set and use normalized radial wavefunctions and spherical harmonics:
The angular integral is . Including and the radial volume factor then gives
Reversing the quantum phase of reverses this sign, with no change to the predicted energy eigenvalues.
Thus the nontrivial two-dimensional block and its determinant equation are
Consequently, for the displayed sign convention,
The two remaining energy eigenstates have zero first-order shifts. The slopes correspond to opposite electric dipole moments, and . The electric field selects combinations of opposite parity that already have these dipole expectations at leading order. This is why applying first-order nondegenerate perturbation theory separately to and , and obtaining two zero diagonal entries, misses the splitting.
The approximation requires small compared with the separation to other principal quantum numbers. For real hydrogen atoms, it also requires the relevant electric-dipole interaction to dominate the small splittings omitted here, including the Lamb shift. At sufficiently small electric fields a pre-existing nonzero – separation must be retained before taking the limit. A simple two-state illustration with unperturbed separation has shifts relative to its mean
For , the lower branch moves by relative to its zero-field value. At the splitting is linear. This interpolation explains the importance of the hydrogen energy-level degeneracy; it is not a complete model of the fine structure multiplet.
Line charge Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
A line charge is a charge distribution idealized as lying on a curve, described by charge per unit length. An infinite straight line with constant density produces the radial electric field by Gauss's law, and a logarithmic electrostatic potential.
Lippmann fringe spacing 2026-10-18
At normal incidence, let measure distance from the reflector into a uniform transparent layer with refractive index . For a monochromatic wave of vacuum wavelength , the layer wavenumber is . Represent the incident and returning electric fields by complex wave amplitudes with time factor suppressed:
The time-averaged squared electric field, normalized to the incident contribution, is
This electric exposure pattern has maxima separated by
The wave phase of the reflector shifts the maxima's positions but leaves their spacing unchanged in this uniform-layer model. The electric pattern, rather than the zero net energy flux of an ideal standing wave, is the relevant exposure proxy. An imperfect mirror reduces its contrast: , where denotes this exposure proxy.
Choose and . Then the medium wavelength is and . For an ideal phase-reversing reflector, and the normalized pattern is : its first two maxima are at and . These are chosen calculations, not measured properties of a historical photographic emulsion or the optical response of Mercury.
Figure 1.
A standing wave records depth fringes apart
. Original schematic and calculation for chosen , and an ideal phase-reversing mirror. The upper diagram distinguishes recording with a reflector from later reflected-colour readout. The lower plot shows the normalized electric exposure pattern, not a measured developed density profile. The first fringe position depends on reflector wave phase; the period does not. Material widths in the apparatus schematic are illustrative. Source. Details.
For multiple mutually incoherent wavelengths, time averaging adds exposure contributions rather than their instantaneous electric fields. In a linearized recording model,
Here is incident spectral exposure density, a wavelength-dependent recording sensitivity and a model exposure response. An optical spectrum therefore writes overlapping depth oscillations, not necessarily visibly separated sheets. This is a useful connection to the Fourier transform: approximately, depth is paired with optical spatial frequency . Finite recording depth, varying sensitivity and nonlinear photographic processing prevent treating this expression as an exact inversion rule for an actual plate.
Local Joule heating rate 2026-10-14
The electric field does work on matter at local power per volume
Here is current density and the dot product includes the relative direction. Positive means energy passes from the field to matter; negative means matter supplies energy to the field. In general this is a work rate, not automatically an irreversible heating rate.[ref]
For a stationary isotropic Ohmic conductor with real scalar electrical conductivity , local Ohm's law gives . Thus the local Joule heating rate is
The electrical resistivity has units , and electrical conductivity has units . These formulas use the material's rest frame and dissipative conduction current density. Moving media, complex conductivity, and additional storage or transport processes require their appropriate energy balance rather than this scalar substitution.
For uniform current in a straight homogeneous wire of length , wire cross-sectional area and constant electrical conductivity, , and . The volume integral recovers terminal power:
As a numerical check, the wire already used in electrical resistance has , , and . It gives , and , agreeing with and . Concentrating the same electric current in a smaller wire cross-sectional area therefore raises the local heating rate if electrical resistivity stays fixed.
Local tidal acceleration scaling Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-10-25
The geodesic deviation equation makes the relative gravitational acceleration proportional to the separation and a typical Riemann curvature tensor component . Thus tidal acceleration vanishes as at fixed bounded curvature. A uniform electric field can give different accelerations at the same point, independently of separation. Relative tidal changes accumulated over a fixed long time need not vanish as a fraction of the initial separation; a local spacetime experiment must control its duration as well as its spatial size.
For ideal oppositely charged parallel plates, the normal electric field is . A boost along that normal leaves each transverse plate area unchanged. Invariance of total charge therefore preserves surface charge density and the normal electric field. The plate separation contracts, but the large-plate field does not depend on that separation. Including longitudinal contraction in a voltage argument while holding voltage fixed would impose an unsupported extra assumption.
Lorentz force Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
The Lorentz force is the force exerted by an electric field and a magnetic field on a body with electric charge and velocity . In SI units its form in nonrelativistic classical mechanics, using mass and Newton's second law, is
Both fields are evaluated at the body's position at the current time. The electric field contributes even at rest, whereas the magnetic force depends on velocity through a cross product. [ref]; [ref].
For a concrete charged particle in a uniform magnetic field, use nondimensionalization to stipulate , magnetic field , zero electric field, initial position , and initial velocity . These are rescaled quantities, not an assertion that the mass, electric charge, and magnetic field have the same physical units. At the start, , so the magnetic acceleration points toward . The resulting circular motion is
At the position is and the velocity is ; at the position is and the velocity is . Thus the circle has center and radius one. Viewed from toward the plane, the motion is clockwise. Changing only the electric charge to gives position and reverses the bending to counterclockwise.
Figure 1. . Stipulated rescaled and zero electric field. Left: positive electric charge follows the clockwise circle from initial velocity ; the velocity is tangent and the magnetic force points inward. Dots denote a magnetic field out of the plane. Right: adding parallel velocity gives helical motion in a uniform magnetic field, with position and the same transverse radius one. Straight arrows show magnetic field lines, distinct from the curved path. Details.
Adding initial velocity leaves the transverse circular motion unchanged and gives
This is a helix of transverse radius one, cyclotron frequency , and transverse period ; the advance along in one turn is . The parallel component of velocity stays constant because the magnetic force has no parallel component: there is no magnetic acceleration along the magnetic field. If the initial velocity were entirely parallel to the magnetic field, the magnetic force would vanish and the path would be straight. [ref].
More generally, with zero electric field, no other forces, and a uniform constant magnetic field of magnitude , decompose velocity into perpendicular and parallel components. For nonzero electric charge , the perpendicular speed determines the gyroradius, while the cyclotron frequency is an angular frequency:
These are nonrelativistic formulas; see the relativistic cyclotron orbit for the correction. The beauty is that increasing perpendicular speed increases the radius in exactly the proportion needed to leave the period unchanged. Conversely, known magnetic field, perpendicular speed, and measured radius determine the magnitude of the electric charge divided by mass. This makes the same geometry useful for comparing bodies with different electric charge and mass.
Two short checks explain the result. First, the cross product gives for both stipulated positive-electric charge paths, exactly their acceleration. Second, the transverse magnetic force supplies the centripetal acceleration, so ; for this gives the gyroradius, and gives the cyclotron frequency.
Magnetic forces do no work: the instantaneous power of the magnetic part of the Lorentz force vanishes because a cross product is perpendicular to its first argument. The work-energy theorem therefore gives
The dot product is zero at every instant, rather than only after a full turn. With zero electric field and no other forces, the kinetic energy and speed remain constant; the electric field can increase or decrease kinetic energy according to the sign of . In the two stipulated examples the constant kinetic energy is respectively and in rescaled units. The extra parallel velocity raises kinetic energy without changing the gyroradius or the cyclotron frequency.
For an electric example in rescaled units, stipulate , zero magnetic field, constant electric field , no other forces, and rest at . The Lorentz force gives acceleration and velocity , hence kinetic energy and power . At , the kinetic energy has risen from zero to two: the electric field has done positive work.
The existing electromagnetic field tensor formulation expresses the same interaction covariantly. For four-momentum and four-velocity , using proper time , the Lorentz force law is
Its spatial and temporal components are
A conducting conical pendulum connected to a grounded pivot develops a motional electric potential difference between the rotation axis and a bob at radius . If the bob dominates the capacitance, its electric charge is . An additional uniform vertical electric field changes both the force on that charge and, while the grounding connection remains, the background electric potential entering the charging relation. These effects must be treated consistently when calculating a first-order mechanical response.
Uniform perpendicular fields with admit a subluminal Lorentz boost eliminating the electric field. A laboratory particle initially at rest follows a circle in the adapted frame and a stretched cycloid in the laboratory. The mean drift velocity is , while its laboratory kinetic energy is periodic rather than unbounded.
Magnetic field Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-13
A magnetic field is a vector field whose local value determines the magnetic part of the Lorentz force on a body with electric charge and velocity . In SI units,
where is the speed, , and is the angle between the velocity and the magnetic field. The cross product makes a nonzero magnetic force perpendicular to both the velocity and the magnetic field. The right-hand rule gives its direction for positive electric charge; negative electric charge reverses it. [ref].
The SI unit of magnetic field is the tesla:
For a stipulated example in SI units, take electric charge , velocity , and magnetic field . The cross product gives magnetic force . With the same speed directed along , the magnetic force is zero: motion parallel to a magnetic field produces no magnetic acceleration.
Magnetic field lines visualize the direction of a magnetic field by being tangent to it at each point. They are not generally the path of a body with electric charge: in a uniform magnetic field along , the magnetic field lines are straight while transverse velocity produces circular motion, and adding parallel velocity produces helical motion in a uniform magnetic field. The worked Lorentz force example below illustrates this distinction.
A magnetic field need not be static. Magnetostatics is the restricted case with no dependence on time; an electromagnetic wave has changing electric field and magnetic field even in vacuum. A changing magnetic field is coupled to the electric field through Faraday's law of induction. [ref]. The useful separation is between local bending, described by the Lorentz force, and the amount of magnetic field crossing a surface, described by magnetic flux.
For regular globally defined electromagnetic potentials, use , and the homogeneous Maxwell equations to prove the displayed identity. With vanishing spatial surface flux, its spacetime integral is minus one half the change of magnetic helicity. Zero integral therefore needs matching temporal helicity boundaries, not merely localized electric fields and magnetic fields. The Gaussian potential has helicity and supplies an explicit spatially localized counterexample when changes from zero to one.
Magnetostatic Ampère law 2026-10-14
In vacuum magnetostatics, the Ampère-Maxwell equation reduces to . Applying Stokes theorem gives , where is the electric current crossing an oriented spanning surface. Time-dependent electric fields require the additional displacement current term in the Ampère-Maxwell equation.
