Free particle in rotating coordinates 2026-10-18
Consider a ball moving horizontally with no net horizontal force in the laboratory. Treat its horizontal motion as that of a free particle: with constant . Axes rotating counterclockwise at constant angular velocity about the launch point assign it the positionThis is an exact rotation matrix transformation, with the axes coinciding at . Taking , , and gives the two views below. At , the laboratory position is , but the rotating position is approximately . Both assign the same distance from the origin.
The entire rotating acceleration must include the centrifugal acceleration as well as the Coriolis acceleration. To see the balance explicitly, write and . Direct differentiation givesThe two apparent contributions areAt launch , so only the Coriolis acceleration contributes to the initial bending. Later the centrifugal acceleration also contributes; the full curved trajectory cannot be explained by keeping only the Coriolis force. In particular, grows even though the Coriolis force does no work: the rotating-frame kinetic energy increase is supplied by work from the centrifugal force. The laboratory kinetic energy remains .
Completing the square in the integral over an intermediate position shows that two free-particle propagators compose to the propagator for the sum of their positive time intervals. For equal slices, the quadratic identity isThe Fresnel integral contributes a factor proportional to ; multiplying successive factors gives . A consistent convergence regulator fixes the phases of these square roots.
From Heisenberg arrays to Born-Jordan commutation Created 2026-10-18 Updated 2026-10-20
In 1925, Werner Heisenberg proposed replacing classical orbital quantities with arrays of transition amplitudes and frequencies. His paper's opening demanded relations between quantities observable in principle; section 1 built products by summing over an intermediate state and noted their dependence on order. The formulas above express that construction in modern linear operator notation.[ref]

The losses constrain excitation of chemical atoms; they do not determine every optical coupling. The Franck-Hertz experiment explains the original mistaken ionization interpretation.Such excitation and spectral line evidence motivated a mechanics of discrete energy levels and transitions. Replacing one representation by another was a theoretical construction; the Franck-Hertz experiment does not measure a matrix product or establish a unique representation of an observable.
Later in 1925, Max Born and Pascual Jordan developed the array calculus systematically. Their section 3 states , equivalently the modern canonical commutation relationThis relates position and momentum through an intrinsically noncommuting product.[ref]

For the quantum harmonic oscillator, the canonical commutation relation and creation and annihilation operators give , recovering both the spacing and zero-point energy algebraically. One must retain infinitely many number states for the exact relation: the finite cutoff below reveals the obstruction explicitly.
Galilean invariance 2026-10-25
A dynamical symmetry under Galilean transformations. For an isolated pair with constant masses, a force law depending only on relative positions and relative velocities has this invariance. Equal-and-opposite forces alone do not imply it: their magnitude can depend on centre of mass velocity relative to a preferred frame.
Gravitational constant Created 2026-09-28 Updated 2026-10-14
The gravitational constant sets the strength of Newton's law of universal gravitation. Two point masses and a center-to-center distance apart attract with force magnitudeFor fixed masses and separation, doubling would double the force. For bodies with spherical symmetry, the same exterior formula follows from the spherical shell theorem; for arbitrary extended bodies, add the attractions of their mass density elements instead. The gravitational constant connects a laboratory attraction to the Newtonian gravitational field controlling a Kepler orbit.
The gravitational constant and local gravitational acceleration are different quantities. Applying Newton's second law to a test particle gives for one spherical source. The source's mass and the observer's position change ; remains the same parameter of the law. A local falling-body experiment therefore measures a field, not alone. On rotating Earth, an instrument fixed to the surface also responds to centrifugal acceleration, while surrounding mass density and altitude change the gravitational contribution.
Dimensional analysis explains the units. Denote the base physical dimensions of length, mass and time by . Since force has dimension ,By contrast, and the standard gravitational parameter has dimension . A small numerical value of a dimensional constant depends on the units chosen: it is the resulting force for specified physical masses and separation that conveys the laboratory scale.

For an original scale calculation, stipulate two point masses separated by and insert this recommended : . The corresponding acceleration of either mass is at that instant. Reducing the separation to multiplies both by . These are ideal model predictions, not observations; their tiny scale explains why stray forces matter.
Being a constant of a physical law does not make the numerical value exact. The SI fixes the numerical values of seven defining constants, including the speed of light and Planck constant; is determined experimentally. Exact unit definitions still require physical realizations with measurement uncertainty: calibrating a length or a mass does not become error-free.[ref]
For small angles about the downward vertical and prescribed pivot position , a simple pendulum obeys the displayed forced-oscillator equation. Off resonance, its harmonic particular solution is , with . At exact resonance, a pendulum initially vertical with zero angular velocity has in the undamped linear model. The growing envelope eventually violates the small-angle assumption; damping and nonlinear frequency shifts matter in a real pendulum.
Heisenberg uncertainty relation Created 2026-10-06 Updated 2026-10-14
The Heisenberg uncertainty relation constrains the standard deviations of position and momentum in one preparation:On the real line, the position operator acts by multiplication, and the momentum operator is , with the reduced Planck constant. Their canonical commutation relation and the Robertson uncertainty principle give the bound on normalized quantum states satisfying the moment and product-domain assumptions above; Schwartz functions are a convenient sufficient class. Thus making a preparation more sharply localized in position forces a wider momentum distribution, even for ideal measurement in quantum mechanics.
An explicit saturating example is the normalized Gaussian wave packet, for ,The wavefunction is a probability amplitude; its squared magnitude is the probability density function, by the Born rule. That density is a normal distribution of mean zero and standard deviation , rather than a density whose width is read directly from the amplitude's exponent. With the unitary, negative-exponent convention for the Fourier transform, its momentum amplitude isThe Gaussian integral evaluates this Fourier transform. Consequently is another normal distribution, with mean zero and standard deviationFor example, in dimensionless units with , give . The Gaussian wave packets all saturate the same bound: narrowing one density broadens the other. More precisely, choose a reference length and set , ; then , and the plotted widths are and .
Position and momentum probability densities for three minimum-uncertainty Gaussian preparations: dimensionless widths 0.5, 1, and 2 in position give reciprocal momentum widths 1, 0.5, and 0.25
. Details. The Heisenberg uncertainty relation connects localization to the cost in kinetic energy. In a quantum harmonic oscillator with mass and angular frequency , the variance contribution to the expectation value of the energy is bounded using the arithmetic-geometric mean inequality:The mean-dependent contributions are nonnegative. The Gaussian eigenstate for a quadratic potential with and zero means reaches this ground state energy. This is why the tradeoff is more than a limitation on preparation: it predicts an unavoidable positive minimum energy.
Heisenberg's original article appeared in March 1927 as "Über den anschaulichen Inhalt der quantentheoretischen Kinematik und Mechanik", Zeitschrift für Physik 43, pp. 172–198. Its abstract discusses simultaneous imprecision of canonically conjugate quantities and explanatory thought experiments. The precise standard deviation formulation here distinguishes preparation spreads from a slogan about measurement disturbance. [ref].
Suppose an initially circular Kepler orbit of radius surrounds central mass , and a fraction is removed quickly compared with the orbital period. Assume no recoil or wind drag, so the satellite's position and velocity are continuous through the change. Its specific angular momentum stays , while its new specific orbital energy is . The resulting elliptic Kepler orbit has semi-major axis , pericentre , apocentre and orbital eccentricity . The limiting loss fraction gives a parabolic Kepler orbit; larger losses unbind the initially circular satellite. Slow removal instead produces adiabatic orbital expansion under isotropic mass loss, which preserves circularity to leading adiabatic order.
Inertial motion in an accelerating frame 2026-10-14
Constant velocity depends on the reference frame. For nonrotating axes and a moving origin of laboratory position , subtracting that origin givesIf with constant velocity , the Galilean transformation leaves acceleration unchanged. The cart moving at in the laboratory is at rest in a frame moving right at . Both descriptions obey Newton's first law.
Instead choose an origin with , where the stipulated constant points right. The same cart hasAt , the cart is instantaneously at rest relative to this accelerating origin, but its relative acceleration is nonzero. In this translating accelerated reference frame, Newton's second law must include the effective inertial force . This term accounts for the accelerating coordinates; the actual external forces on the cart still sum to zero. No rotation-dependent terms are present because the axes remain parallel to the laboratory axes.
Inertia tensor Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
The inertia tensor packages the moments of inertia about every axis through a specified point into one symmetric matrix. An axis still needs a direction: if is a unit vector, its scalar moment of inertia is . The same mass layout can therefore be easy to spin about one direction and harder about another. The inertia tensor also determines rotational kinetic energy and relates angular velocity to angular momentum in the appropriate rigid body model.
Take position vectors relative to , expressed in an orthonormal basis. For point masses , or a continuous distribution with mass density and ,Here is the Kronecker delta. Equivalently, using the identity matrix and an outer product,Every entry has SI units . The diagonal entries are axial moments of inertia; the off-diagonal entries carry a minus sign in this convention. Some texts instead define the integrals without the prefixed minus sign , , as their named off-diagonal quantities and put the minus signs into the displayed matrix. Check that convention before combining formulas. [ref] [ref]
The symmetric matrix is positive semidefinite, because its quadratic form isThe dot product and cross product identify this as a sum of squared distances when is a unit vector. A zero moment of inertia occurs precisely when all the mass lies on that axis, up to sets of zero mass. A genuine three-dimensional body with positive mass density in a volume has strictly positive axial moments of inertia. Do not confuse this inertia tensor with the mass second-moment tensor : they obey , where denotes the matrix trace.
If is fixed in an inertial frame and each velocity is , summing the individual kinetic energies and angular momenta givesThese formulas also describe angular momentum and rotational kinetic energy relative to the centre of mass of a translating rigid body. In that case the total kinetic energy in the inertial frame is . For a general moving point , the body's actual velocities include , so alone need not be its angular momentum about . [ref] [ref]
Changing the orthonormal basis changes components, rather than the physical distribution: if the columns of an orthogonal matrix are the new basis vectors expressed in the old basis, then . Changing the reference point is a different operation, governed by the tensor parallel-axis theorem. Both principal axes and principal moments of inertia must therefore be quoted with their reference point.
Initially circular damped planar oscillator 2026-10-18
For an isotropic harmonic oscillator with mass , restoring constant and linear drag coefficient , put and . Choose initial position and tangential velocity , which would give anticlockwise circular motion without damping. For underdamping, givesTaking the squared norm and multiplying by gives the exact potential energyOnly to leading order in does this reduce to . The exact expression has , consistent with the initially tangential velocity, while the leading approximation does not reproduce this short-time derivative. Angular momentum obeys by angular momentum decay under uniform linear drag.
Inverse-square potential Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
Here inverse-square potential means the potential energy associated with an attractive inverse-square law for a central force: the potential energy itself varies as inverse distance. For and position with ,The gradient makes the distinction explicit: doubling halves the magnitude of potential energy but quarters the magnitude of force. The neighboring repulsive inverse-square potential instead has potential energy proportional to and an inverse-cube force; the two naming conventions must be distinguished.
For Newton's law of universal gravitation, , where is the gravitational constant. Treat the attracting mass as an isolated fixed point mass, or as a body with spherical symmetry and exterior test particle of constant mass . The spherical shell theorem gives the same exterior Newtonian gravitational potential energy without requiring uniform mass density. Here is measured from the centre, and the formula applies outside the body; it does not describe its interior. The Newtonian gravitational potential per unit mass is .[ref]
Chapter 13: Work and Potential Energy (A). §13–2, equations 13.11–13.12: radial work and conserved energy; §13–4: gravitational field outside a sphere
The negative sign records binding relative to infinite separation, rather than a negative kinetic energy. Moving from to increases potential energy byBecause the force is a conservative force, this work depends on the endpoints, including for a curved path. Integrating with zero at infinity gives ; adding a constant leaves the force unchanged but shifts the numerical escape energy threshold by that same constant. This is why the reference at infinity must accompany an escape velocity calculation.
For an exact synthetic comparison, stipulate the standard gravitational parameter and a test particle. At , and the inward force has magnitude ; at , and the inward force has magnitude . The increase is of potential energy. These stipulated parameters are an arithmetic example, not observations of a particular body. The escape-energy balance diagram uses the same parameters.
Kalman measurement update 2026-10-14
The Kalman measurement update incorporates the new observation by Gaussian conditional expectation:The posterior covariance matrix subtracts a positive semidefinite matrix, reflecting the information supplied by the measurement. Even if the innovation is zero and the mean does not move, the uncertainty can decrease. In this linear Gaussian model the posterior covariance matrix depends on the observation geometry and its uncertainty, rather than on the numerical observed value.
The derivation is one application of Gaussian conditional expectation per measurement. Before observing , the state and observation have joint covariance matrixConditioning the upper block on the lower block gives exactly the two update equations. The upper-right block explains the Kalman gain: a measured component corrects a state component only to the extent that their prediction errors have covariance. The measurement can therefore improve an unobserved velocity when a state-space model correlates its error with an observed position.
Kinematics Created 2026-10-20 Updated 2026-10-24
The description of motion through position, velocity and acceleration, before specifying the forces responsible. For constant acceleration these are related by integrating time derivatives. Projectile motion under an approximately uniform gravitational acceleration is an elementary example.
Kinetic energy Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
Kinetic energy is the energy associated with motion. For a nonrelativistic point mass of mass , measured in a specified inertial frame,Here is velocity and is speed; is another common symbol for kinetic energy. The dot product makes nonnegative regardless of the direction of velocity. At fixed mass, doubling speed quadruples kinetic energy: a point mass at has , whereas at it has . The SI units are . Different reference frames can assign different velocities and therefore different kinetic energies. [ref]
A short outline explains why kinetic energy has this formula. In a nonrelativistic inertial frame, constant mass and Newton's second law give, using the chain rule,Integrating over time proves the work-energy theorem, . The net force is the sum of all forces, and is their total work, not merely the work of a chosen driving force. This route to final speed is useful when the forces as functions of position are known but the full motion as a function of time would be harder to find. [ref]
In the running example, a point mass starts at rest and receives a constant net force through . Its net work is , soAt any intermediate distance , and : kinetic energy is a linear function of distance, while speed is proportional to the square root of distance. If a net opposing braking force subsequently acts for , it does of work and brings this point mass to rest. Negative net work decreases kinetic energy; it does not make kinetic energy negative. Beyond the stopping point the motion must be reconsidered, since the point mass cannot keep moving forward with a negative .
Kinetic energy also makes the exchange with potential energy intuitive: a falling body's loss of gravitational potential energy can appear as increased kinetic energy. The formula above applies when speed is small compared with the speed of light; at higher speeds, special relativity changes the expression. [ref]
Laboratory paths of an equal-mass binary 2026-10-20
For equal masses and relative position , the individual positions are and , where the center of mass has uniform velocity in an isolated system. Bound inverse-square force motion makes an ellipse; each mass follows a half-size ellipse in the center-of-mass frame. Adding a nonzero center-of-mass drift generally makes their laboratory trajectories nonclosed. The relative orbital period is not necessarily a period of either laboratory position.
Length contraction Created 2026-10-05 Updated 2026-10-14
A rod of rest length moving parallel to its length has simultaneous laboratory length , where is the Lorentz factor. Here is the rod's proper length measured in its rest frame. Transverse lengths are unchanged by the corresponding Lorentz transformation.
For a rod at rest in with endpoints and , let move at relative to the laboratory . Record both endpoint positions at laboratory time . The Lorentz transformation then gives , so their recorded positions are and : the laboratory length is . This is an operational definition: synchronized laboratory detectors register the endpoints at the same laboratory time. A photograph collects light emitted at different times and need not show this length. [ref]
https://fourmilab.ch/etexts/einstein/specrel/www/. Einstein (1905), sections 2 and 4: measuring moving rods
.For those same two endpoint spacetime events, . Thus the front-end measurement occurs earlier in by about . Length contraction compares simultaneous endpoint measurements in each frame, which select different pairs of spacetime events; it does not mean that the rod has been compressed in its own rest frame.
Local density of states 2026-10-18
The local density of states resolves the density of states by position as well as energy. With a consistent counting of spin states, its integral over the specimen's volume gives the total density of states, . It describes the spatial distribution of available states, rather than their occupation.
Lorentz force Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-10-14
The Lorentz force is the force exerted by an electric field and a magnetic field on a body with electric charge and velocity . In SI units its form in nonrelativistic classical mechanics, using mass and Newton's second law, isBoth fields are evaluated at the body's position at the current time. The electric field contributes even at rest, whereas the magnetic force depends on velocity through a cross product. [ref]

; [ref]https://openstax.org/books/university-physics-volume-2/pages/11-2-magnetic-fields-and-lines. OpenStax, magnetic force on moving charge
.For a concrete charged particle in a uniform magnetic field, use nondimensionalization to stipulate , magnetic field , zero electric field, initial position , and initial velocity . These are rescaled quantities, not an assertion that the mass, electric charge, and magnetic field have the same physical units. At the start, , so the magnetic acceleration points toward . The resulting circular motion isAt the position is and the velocity is ; at the position is and the velocity is . Thus the circle has center and radius one. Viewed from toward the plane, the motion is clockwise. Changing only the electric charge to gives position and reverses the bending to counterclockwise.
Adding initial velocity leaves the transverse circular motion unchanged and givesThis is a helix of transverse radius one, cyclotron frequency , and transverse period ; the advance along in one turn is . The parallel component of velocity stays constant because the magnetic force has no parallel component: there is no magnetic acceleration along the magnetic field. If the initial velocity were entirely parallel to the magnetic field, the magnetic force would vanish and the path would be straight. [ref].
More generally, with zero electric field, no other forces, and a uniform constant magnetic field of magnitude , decompose velocity into perpendicular and parallel components. For nonzero electric charge , the perpendicular speed determines the gyroradius, while the cyclotron frequency is an angular frequency:These are nonrelativistic formulas; see the relativistic cyclotron orbit for the correction. The beauty is that increasing perpendicular speed increases the radius in exactly the proportion needed to leave the period unchanged. Conversely, known magnetic field, perpendicular speed, and measured radius determine the magnitude of the electric charge divided by mass. This makes the same geometry useful for comparing bodies with different electric charge and mass.
Two short checks explain the result. First, the cross product gives for both stipulated positive-electric charge paths, exactly their acceleration. Second, the transverse magnetic force supplies the centripetal acceleration, so ; for this gives the gyroradius, and gives the cyclotron frequency.
Magnetic forces do no work: the instantaneous power of the magnetic part of the Lorentz force vanishes because a cross product is perpendicular to its first argument. The work-energy theorem therefore givesThe dot product is zero at every instant, rather than only after a full turn. With zero electric field and no other forces, the kinetic energy and speed remain constant; the electric field can increase or decrease kinetic energy according to the sign of . In the two stipulated examples the constant kinetic energy is respectively and in rescaled units. The extra parallel velocity raises kinetic energy without changing the gyroradius or the cyclotron frequency.
For an electric example in rescaled units, stipulate , zero magnetic field, constant electric field , no other forces, and rest at . The Lorentz force gives acceleration and velocity , hence kinetic energy and power . At , the kinetic energy has risen from zero to two: the electric field has done positive work.
The existing electromagnetic field tensor formulation expresses the same interaction covariantly. For four-momentum and four-velocity , using proper time , the Lorentz force law isIts spatial and temporal components are
Mechanical configuration 2026-10-18
A mechanical configuration specifies the positions and orientations of all parts of a system, subject to its constraints. It is a point of the mechanical configuration space ; generalized coordinates label such points locally. A configuration does not by itself specify velocities, so it generally does not determine the system's full dynamical state. For a bead on a fixed circular hoop, its angle specifies its configuration, while its angular velocity is additional data.
