Let denote the actual horizontal velocity field. With constant nonzero Coriolis parameter , geostrophic balance and hydrostatic balance, using pressure per reference density , giveDifferentiate the first equation in to obtain thermal-wind balance:Taking the dot product with provesThus the horizontal velocity is tangent to the horizontal buoyancy contours at every height. For a fluid whose thermal equation of state makes horizontal buoyancy contours coincide with horizontal temperature contours, there is no horizontal advection across those contours. In a dry terrestrial atmosphere, use potential temperature as the materially conserved thermal variable. A salinity contribution to buoyancy would require separate treatment before interpreting the result as a statement about temperature.
The usual statement about net meridional heat transport also follows explicitly. Introduce a horizontal streamfunction such that . Integration of thermal-wind balance givesand henceFor a zonally periodic function , or vanishing endpoint contributions, the zonal integral is zero. Likewise, the anomalous eddy buoyancy flux isThe required correlation between meridional velocity and thermal anomaly is absent. A nonzero vertical phase tilt, as in the next part, permits that correlation.
Qualification of the wording. The result does not say that the local heat flux vector vanishes, or that an arbitrary open-domain integral vanishes without boundary conditions. For a concrete counterexample to that literal reading, take and . These satisfy the displayed thermal-wind balance, but is generally nonzero. What the hypotheses alone guarantee is zero transport across horizontal buoyancy contours; the vanishing zonally integrated heat transport uses the stated endpoint condition.

The low-latitude regions of Earth absorb more incoming solar radiation than they emit as outgoing thermal radiation, whereas high latitudes have a net annual radiation deficit. The obliquity of solar incidence and the distribution of daylight create a strong latitude dependence of absorbed solar energy; emitted thermal radiation varies less strongly because terrestrial temperature contrasts are smaller. The terrestrial atmosphere and ocean therefore carry energy from the tropical surplus toward the polar deficits. Otherwise the low latitudes would keep warming and the high latitudes cooling until a different local radiative equilibrium was reached.
For a steady, zonally averaged energy balance, let be net downward radiation at the top of the terrestrial atmosphere and the total northward energy transport across latitude . A narrow spherical band and conservation of energy giveThe poleward direction is northward in the Northern Hemisphere and southward in the Southern Hemisphere. Seasonal internal energy storage modifies the instantaneous balance, but not the annual need for poleward redistribution.
Several circulation structures contribute in addition to the transient eddies produced by baroclinic instability of the middle latitudes:
- The Hadley cells, mainly between the equator and about latitude, export energy in their upper poleward branches and return air equatorward near the surface. The transported quantity includes enthalpy, gravitational potential energy and latent heat; the upper and lower branches have different thermal properties. The cross-equatorial Hadley cell is especially important in the seasonal cycle.
- Quasi-stationary Rossby waves, associated with mountains and continental heating contrasts, carry heat in the extratropical terrestrial atmosphere. Their meridional velocity and temperature anomalies can have a poleward correlation. These are an additional time-mean contribution alongside travelling weather disturbances.
- The ocean gyres in tropical and subtropical basins redistribute warm water poleward in strong western boundary currents and return cooler water equatorward over broader regions. The thermal difference between the branches produces net heat transport despite little net meridional volume transport.
- The oceanic overturning circulation, including the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, combines warm upper water moving poleward with colder deep return water. It transports substantial heat through the tropical and subtropical Atlantic toward the northern high latitudes. Wind forcing, buoyancy exchange and mixing all help maintain this global circulation.
The Brewer-Dobson circulation additionally redistributes energy in the stratosphere, with tropical ascent and extratropical descent, although most total atmospheric heat transport occurs lower down. An Eulerian mean middle-latitude Ferrel cell is thermally indirect and can oppose the poleward transport by eddies; listing every meridional circulation as a direct poleward heat carrier would be incorrect.

Use eastward , northward , pressure coordinate increasing downward, and geopotential . Horizontal derivatives are taken on an isobaric surface. The horizontal geostrophic balance and vertical hydrostatic balance arewhere is the specific gas constant of dry air and the final equality uses the ideal gas law. At fixed latitude is independent of . Cross-differentiating givesConsequently the pressure-coordinate thermal wind equations areEquivalently, . Notice the sign: increasing eastward velocity upward means decreasing eastward velocity with , and hence poleward-decreasing temperature in the Northern Hemisphere.
For the stratospheric polar vortex estimate, the original diagram must be read on its logarithmic pressure axis. Near in the winter hemisphere, adjacent wind contours suggest an increase of roughly through a pressure decade surrounding : for example, about near and near . These are coarse graphical readings, not a sounding. ThusWith and , the poleward temperature gradient is approximatelyIf the vortex edge is taken to span roughly to , its width is , givingThe estimate depends on the width assigned to the edge and the graphical vertical shear; a range of several to roughly fifteen kelvin is more justified than a precise value. The sign remains a cold winter pole in either hemisphere. The diagram does not by itself prescribe a unique pair of edge latitudes.
At low latitudes, horizontal free-atmospheric temperature gradients are usually much smaller than at the winter vortex edge. For a comparable finite wind vertical shear, the rearranged thermal-wind balance, , is consistent with weaker temperature gradients as decreases. However, geostrophic balance loses validity near the equator because the Coriolis parameter vanishes; division by cannot be used there to derive a prediction. The weak temperature gradient approximation is better motivated by rapid horizontal internal gravity wave adjustment, together with tropical convection and the Hadley cell. Thermal-wind balance describes the balanced extratropical relation and its tendency approaching the tropics; it is not a complete causal explanation of equatorial thermal uniformity.

The quasi-geostrophic potential-vorticity equation is the leading balanced form of potential-vorticity conservation for an inviscid rotating fluid with stable density stratification, small Rossby number and an adiabatic process for each fluid element. Its parent conservation law is Ertel potential vorticity conservation. Horizontal geostrophic balance, vertical hydrostatic balance, and the beta-plane approximation reduce it to advection of one scalar by the leading horizontal geostrophic flow.
One can see its origin by combining the vertical vorticity equation with the thermal equation. Set , , and . The quasi-geostrophic approximation givesHere is the buoyancy perturbation relative to the reference stable density stratification, its buoyancy frequency, and the small vertical velocity. The stretching of absolute vorticity in the first equation is offset by the change of stratification represented by the second. More precisely,The last dot product is zero because thermal-wind balance makes perpendicular to . Adding therefore yieldsThe constant has no effect on the tendency, but its inclusion makes the connection with absolute vorticity clear. Vertical advection of is beyond the retained order; the vertical velocity has already supplied the stretching and thermodynamic terms.
- Use observed pressure or geopotential and temperature to construct a balanced initial quasi-geostrophic streamfunction, its interior potential vorticity, and the upper and lower boundary buoyancy.
- Evolve with for a small time step. For flat rigid boundaries, also evolve their thermal data with there. Appropriate lateral boundary conditions and any known large-scale circulation must accompany these fields.
- Recover the new streamfunction by stratified quasi-geostrophic inversion:
Interior potential vorticity alone is insufficient: boundary thermal anomalies can induce flow even with zero interior anomaly, as in the Eady model. The method filters fast inertia-gravity waves and is useful for large-scale extratropical weather, while tropical dynamics, convection, moisture, friction and diabatic heating require additional physics. If vertical motion is wanted, the quasi-geostrophic omega equation supplies a further diagnostic calculation.

Take eastward, northward and upward. In a rotating reference frame, the horizontal Cauchy momentum equation isHere represents other accelerations, such as friction, and is the Coriolis parameter. When the Rossby number and the ratio are small, and friction is weak, both advective and local acceleration can be neglected. The Coriolis force then balances the pressure gradient force: this is geostrophic balance, with and . The geostrophic wind runs along atmospheric isobars, with low pressure on its left in the northern hemisphere.
A rapid change of pressure need not bring the corresponding geostrophic wind into existence at once. An initially weak wind therefore leaves an inward pressure gradient force around the new low. For a smoothed anomaly of horizontal scale , geostrophic balance would requireFor the illustrative midlatitude value , the implied Rossby number is already about , so curved-flow acceleration matters. With a small tropical value , the inferred speed is and the Rossby number about : the assumed geostrophic balance is untenable. Geostrophic adjustment redistributes the anomaly and emits internal gravity waves, leaving a weaker balanced component.
For a target speed on the same scale, the required scale estimate isThus , or of the initial magnitude, is the midlatitude estimate; at the illustrative tropical it is , or of the initial magnitude. The paper gives no latitude, so there is no unique numerical reduction. At the equator itself one must use equatorial dynamics rather than divide by . Even the tropical estimate has Rossby number , so it describes the scale permitted by the stated balance, rather than a controlled tropical geostrophic balance.
There are two qualifications to “unstable”. A literal top-hat pressure anomaly has a discontinuous edge, where no finite classical geostrophic wind can balance its distributional pressure gradient. The estimate assumes a smoothed edge; a thinner edge requires stronger winds. More generally a large low is not, by its amplitude alone, proved to have an exponentially growing instability. For a concrete counterexample to the claim that such an amplitude cannot be stationary, set , with cylindrical radius , constant and . The cyclonic gradient windis real and satisfies for every , with a regular limit at the centre. This is a stationary axisymmetric flow; no claim about its perturbation stability is needed. Here the physically justified conclusion is that a rapidly imposed anomaly without its balancing wind is unbalanced.
Small tropical Coriolis parameter allows only weak horizontal pressure gradients to coexist with ordinary large-scale winds. Hydrostatic balance connects the vertical variation of these pressure gradients to horizontal temperature gradients; equivalently the approximate thermal wind relation gives . For comparable vertical wind shear, small means smaller . Internal gravity waves can spread heating-induced buoyancy anomalies efficiently before rotation arrests the adjustment. This motivates the weak temperature gradient approximation for the tropical free troposphere; it does not require the land surface or atmospheric boundary layer to have uniform temperature.

Take eastward, northward and upward, and let be the eastward geostrophic wind. With Coriolis parameter independent of , geostrophic balance, hydrostatic balance, and the ideal gas law giveHere is the specific gas constant for dry air. Taking a vertical derivative of the first equation and interchanging mixed partial derivatives givesIt matters that is not constant in the pressure gradient force. Substitutingcancels the two terms proportional to and yields the height-coordinate thermal wind relationIf , this reduces toThe discarded term has relative scale when . Taking , and a atmospheric lapse rate of gives about . Thus this height-coordinate formula is a useful estimate, with potentially tens-of-percent compressibility-related correction through the vertical temperature gradient; it is not an exact consequence of the two balances. If the temperature gradient vanishes vertically, the displayed approximation is exact within those balances.
The hydrostatic approximation is very good on the broad, shallow atmospheric scales considered. The geostrophic balance is normally justified by a small Rossby number and fails as a general approximation near the equator. At , . With the ideal wind and a -- horizontal scale, --: quantitative accuracy is limited for this especially strong ideal jet. Small vertical aspect ratio alone does not ensure geostrophic balance, although a straight, steady zonal flow can satisfy it even when this scale estimate of the Rossby number is not small.
For the requested estimate, suppose the upper jet stream is above a weak surface wind, has temperature , and spans a meridional width . Integrating the approximate thermal wind relation in scale form givesThe northward temperature gradient is negative because the eastward wind strengthens upward. A -- jet width gives roughly --. No unique numerical difference follows without specifying the jet width, height and representative temperature; these are explicitly estimated quantities.

Dense water formed in marginal seas spills over sills and descends the continental slope as a marginal-sea overflow. Strong shear flow generates turbulent mixing and entrainment of surrounding, lighter water. The descending current's volume flux grows while its density anomaly is diluted, modifying the depth at which it joins the deep circulation and the temperature and salinity of the exported water. Thus the deep volume flux can substantially exceed the source overflow volume flux; it cannot be inferred from northern surface cooling alone.[ref]

Joseph Fourier's Théorie analytique de la chaleur by Joseph Fourier (1822) makes trigonometric series instruments for solving problems of heat conduction. A prescribed temperature distribution need not be given by one power series: it may describe different heating on different parts of a body. The extract occurs in Chapter III, §233, where the earlier assumption of an odd-power expansion is relaxed. The innovation concerns both representation and what can count as a function in an analytical calculation.[ref]
Propagation de la chaleur dans un solide rectangle infini. §233, integral formula; §§163–169, the boundary-value problem motivating the expansions
Use a separate integration variable to unpack the printed notation. The proposed Fourier sine series has coefficientsThe integral signs in the extract denote definite integrals over , not antiderivatives; the author explicitly supplies these bounds in the surrounding sentence. Their absent printed bounds are a notational convention, not permission to choose arbitrary constants of integration.
The key calculation is the orthogonality relationThe product-to-sum formulas prove this by integrating cosines of integer multiples of . If an expansion can be integrated term by term, multiplication by followed by integration selects exactly one coefficient. This derives the only possible coefficients, but does not by itself prove the expansion converges to the proposed function. That distinction is central to assessing the extract's claim.
For a revealing example take on . Direct integration gives , and thereforeEvery term is zero at and , so the series cannot take the value at those endpoints. Its natural interpretation uses the odd extension followed by periodic extension; the endpoints become jump discontinuities. More generally, for a piecewise continuously differentiable function, the Fourier series converges at an interior jump to the average of the two one-sided limits, irrespective of an individually assigned value there. Changing one value also leaves the integrals unchanged. Consequently the unqualified assertion of representation for every arbitrary function cannot be a modern pointwise theorem. Dirichlet's theorem on Fourier series supplies sufficient conditions and the correct distinction between continuity points and jumps; its 1829 source explicitly addresses the proof problem.[ref]
Sur la convergence des séries trigonométriques by Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet. 1829, opening discussion and concluding convergence statement
The physical payoff is explicit. For a rod scaled to with zero end temperature, separation of variables in the heat equation producesEach mode solves and the end boundary conditions; the Fourier sine coefficients encode the initial temperature. This rod is an explanatory example, distinct from the stationary rectangular-solid problem opening Joseph Fourier's Chapter III. The factor damps high modes rapidly for positive time. The representation of arbitrary data makes the physical solution possible; the proof of that representation remains a separate task.
Francis Bacon's originality lay chiefly in the reconstruction and coordination of inquiry, rather than in the invention of observation or experiment. Earlier natural philosophy, practical crafts and natural history already contained empirical knowledge. Aristotle's investigations of nature, for example, cannot be reduced to drawing conclusions from words without reference to living things or physical change. What requires explanation is why Francis Bacon thought established practices were failing and what he proposed to alter.
The methodological target was a premature leap from a few familiar cases to very general principles, followed by deductions protected from serious revision. His alternative was a graduated movement from particulars through intermediate generalizations. This was more demanding than collecting favourable examples. Negative and contrasting instances had to constrain the proposed account. The comparison of conditions in which a phenomenon appears, is absent, or varies was intended to exclude unsuitable candidates for its underlying nature.[ref]
Novum Organum by Francis Bacon. Book I, aphorisms 19–22; Book II, tables of presence, absence and degrees, followed by exclusion
A useful example is heat. Merely finding several hot substances does not establish which property explains their temperature. A candidate property has to survive comparisons with cold cases and with cases where one feature changes while others do not. These requirements point toward a disciplined search for causal explanation. They should not be equated with a modern randomized trial or with the claim that every successful science follows a single mechanical rule. The construction of the categories and the assessment of a comparison already require judgment. Francis Bacon's preliminary interpretation of heat was an attempt within a particular research programme, not a complete anticipation of present thermodynamics.
He also made intellectual habits part of the problem. His account of the idols of the mind directed attention to recurrent distortions associated with human tendencies, individual training, language and accepted systems. This is a programme for correcting inquiry, rather than a story in which the investigator simply empties the mind and thereafter reads facts without interpretation. His comparison of the investigator with a bee, combining collected material with active transformation, is especially awkward for the familiar caricature of Baconian inquiry as indiscriminate fact accumulation.[ref]
Novum Organum by Francis Bacon. Book I, aphorisms 38–44 and 95: the idols and the comparison of empirical collection with rational reconstruction
The institutional proposal was equally consequential. New Atlantis by Francis Bacon presents organized work distributed among collectors of information, experimenters and interpreters. Scientific instruments, gardens, workshops, records and travel supply the material of inquiry. The imagined institution aims at useful operations, not simply the production of elegant arguments. However, it also has an internal hierarchy and controls disclosure. It is not a straightforward prospectus for today's open research university. Its religious language and political organization belong to the vision and must not be removed to turn it into a secular manifesto.[ref]
New Atlantis by Francis Bacon. Concluding description of Salomon's House: collections, experimental facilities, offices and decisions about publication
There are substantial continuities. Craftspeople already altered materials and procedures to obtain desired effects; natural history already collected and compared particulars; learned reformers already criticized authority. There are also distinctions from other contemporary innovators: giving mathematics and idealization the central role found in Galileo Galilei's treatment of motion was not the same programme as Bacon's organized natural and experimental histories. A history of one uniform seventeenth-century method would lose that difference.
The strongest judgment is that Francis Bacon offered a distinctive reform of the scale, discipline, purpose and organization of knowledge. His work combined inherited resources in an ambitious programme which could be used to legitimate later collaborative inquiry. Later invocation of his name, however, does not prove that a particular discovery was produced by following his prescriptions. Originality in proposing a reform, effectiveness of a procedure, and influence of a public ideal are three historical claims requiring different evidence.
There is no Landau damping of this branch within the completely degenerate collisionless model. Its phase velocity obeys , while each parallel marginal distribution vanishes outside . There are no particles at the resonant velocity, and . The Landau contour consequently contributes no imaginary part to the dielectric function; a real root is allowed with .
If a small nonzero temperature supplied a tail beyond the Fermi surface, the conclusion would change: the resonant derivative would generally be nonzero. For the convention and a simple weakly damped root, expanding the continued dielectric function would give . This conditional formula is not needed to manufacture damping for the exact cutoff. Neither collisional attenuation nor nonlinear evolution is included in the given dispersion relation.
To obtain the Boltzmann equation, take a dilute gas with a short-range pair potential. Its interaction range is small compared with the mean free path and the spatial scale on which the phase-space distribution function changes. The binary collision approximation treats encounters as isolated elastic collisions; simultaneous encounters involving three or more particles can be neglected. The encounter duration is short compared with the collision relaxation time and macroscopic evolution time, and the external force changes negligibly during an encounter. This permits local, effectively instantaneous scattering at one position .
The essential statistical closure is molecular chaos for the Boltzmann equation: the distribution of incoming pairs factorizes as . Outgoing pairs need not be independent. Follow each incoming pair through its two-body scattering, and use conservation of momentum and kinetic energy, together with time reversal and the invariant scattering measure, to express both gain and loss in the same variables. This givesHere ; when the measure is written as , its Jacobian is included in the Boltzmann scattering kernel. In a scattering-angle convention, that kernel contains relative speed times differential scattering cross-section. The hemisphere prevents double counting equivalent outcomes for indistinguishable particles; the precise factor is included in . The primed velocities are connected to the unprimed ones by the reversible elastic collision map. This closure is appropriate for a dilute short-range gas, rather than a generic long-range interacting system with an important collective mean-field theory contribution.
The further replacement by the BGK model is a phenomenological relaxation closure. Replace the full nonlinear Boltzmann collision operator by relaxation towards a local Maxwellian, with a single, velocity-independent collision relaxation time :It models relaxation towards a local Maxwellian without resolving the detailed scattering. Treating as constant is an additional simplification; it is of the order of a mean time between effective collisions. Near a local Maxwellian, departures in the nonconserved velocity moments decay on this timescale.
Choose to match the collision invariants , and of . For unit particle mass, this meansHere is the mass density, is the mean velocity, and is the temperature in squared-velocity units, before setting . In particular,Thus relaxation preserves local mass, momentum and kinetic energy rather than relaxing them to externally prescribed values.
For a vertical interband transition, the crystal momentum is effectively unchanged because the photon momentum is small. A stimulated downward transition needs an occupied upper state and an empty lower state, with factor ; upward photon absorption has factor . The two matrix elements agree by microscopic reversibility. Their difference is thereforeA common slowly varying transition-strength factor is implicit. Broadening replaces the sharp transition by a convolution; multiple valence bands contribute separate terms.
For one isotropic pair of parabolic energy bands, writeThus . Including the usual twofold spin degeneracy, the number of paired states per volume inside a sphere of radius is . Differentiating with respect to transition energy gives the three-dimensional parabolic interband joint density of statesFor density per angular frequency, . Stating the density convention avoids a missing factor of ; other degeneracies multiply the formula.
At a common carrier temperature, the Fermi-Dirac distribution is a strictly decreasing function of . The direct-gap semiconductor gain condition follows:The lower inequality denotes a transition above the ideal band edge, where the displayed joint density of states is nonzero. Thus quasi-Fermi-level splitting must exceed the transition photon energy. Equality is transparency, rather than net amplification; at zero temperature an allowed transition must also lie within the occupied-electron and empty-valence windows.
For bulk electric-dipole second-harmonic generation, the crystal must lack inversion symmetry and have a nonzero relevant component of its second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility. It should transmit both pump and harmonic, tolerate the required intensity, and allow phase matching by suitable birefringence or another phase-compensation mechanism. A large nonlinear coefficient, low optical loss and good optical quality are desirable. Noncentrosymmetry permits a response but does not guarantee one in every chosen geometry.
In the undepleted plane wave limit, contributions from successive layers give a harmonic amplitude proportional to , where . HenceTune orientation, temperature and pump polarization to maximize the nonlinear coupling and cancel phase mismatch. For continuous operation, an impedance-matched enhancement optical resonator, or intracavity doubling, raises the circulating intensity. Focus the Gaussian beam to balance intensity against diffraction and spatial walk-off; arbitrarily tight focusing shortens the useful overlap. Antireflection surfaces, stable resonance locking and efficient heat removal reduce avoidable loss and drift.
Take to have and use angular-frequency gyromagnetic ratios. Neglecting interspin coupling, the Hamiltonian of the Zeeman energy isFor , define . The exact thermal density matrix in the order isAt high temperature, , expand both numerator and normalization to obtainFor positive , is the most populated state; a negative gyromagnetic ratio reverses that population preference under this basis convention.
Discarding the photon-number result gives a classical mixture of the two outcome branches. The atomic state, in the basis , isIt is also the reduced state before measuring the field; a nonselective operation on the field does not change the atomic reduced density matrix. The atom is not in a coherent superposition with these populations.
For an atomic energy gap , the thermal population ratio is . Matching it givesA finite positive temperature exists when , with at and as from below. Equal populations correspond to zero inverse temperature. If , the expression is a negative effective temperature for a bounded two-level system, not an equilibrium state at any ordinary positive temperature. For a concrete counterexample to an unrestricted positive-temperature interpretation, at the atom is certainly excited, whereas every positive-temperature Gibbs distribution has . The fully excited endpoint is the formal limit . Matching one density matrix does not establish genuine thermalization with a bath.
A quasi-Fermi level is the chemical potential parameter of an approximately thermalized carrier population within one energy band. Rapid intraband scattering can establish a Fermi-Dirac distribution in each energy band before slower interband recombination equilibrates their populations. Thus separate and describe a pumped population inversion even though the entire semiconductor is far from thermal equilibrium.
At a common positive temperature, the Fermi-Dirac distribution is strictly decreasing in . ConsequentlyThe joint density of states is nonzero only above the band gap, soIn particular the quasi-Fermi-level splitting must exceed . The upper boundary is transparency, where stimulated emission balances absorption; the lower boundary has zero joint density of states in this ideal three-dimensional parabolic model. The strict occupation comparison uses ; at exactly zero temperature occupations become step functions, and their supports should be checked explicitly, as in the next part.
Assume equal excess electron and electron hole number densities , with no additional doping imbalance. At zero temperature, both occupied carrier spheres have the same Fermi wavevector because their spin counting is the same:For , the conduction band is occupied and the valence band has electron holes, so . Beyond the occupations reverse and the medium absorbs. Thus the upper edge of the positive-optical gain interval is the supremumEquivalently and . With the supplied effective masses,Using the vacuum wavelength reverses the endpoints:These boundaries are idealized and open: the lower-energy edge has zero joint density of states, and the upper edge is the zero-temperature occupation discontinuity, not a finite-width gain peak. The calculation gives positive material optical gain, not the stronger requirement of exceeding the losses at laser threshold.

Eutectic solidification is the coupled transformation of a liquid into two distinct solid phases at the eutectic temperature and composition, . At fixed pressure in a binary system the three-phase equilibrium is invariant. An exactly eutectic liquid can therefore finish freezing at one temperature, instead of over a broad liquid-plus-solid interval.
Eutectic compositions are useful in joining alloys, for example silver-copper brazing filler: the comparatively low melting temperature and narrow freezing interval help liquid flow into a joint and then solidify. Alternating growth of the two phases often produces a fine lamellar eutectic microstructure. The eutectic is a two-phase aggregate, not a new single solid phase.
